Story
All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated, and microchipped.  * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee. This dog will be at a meet and greet event on Saturday, April 6th at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express from 12-3pm, unless he/she is set up and adopted prior to the event. Those interested in meeting the dog can come out to our meet and greet event. We no longer do application approval onsite. Anyone adopting has been previously approved and set up to meet prior to the event. Adoption Fee: $500   Acorn is a 2 year old Chihuahua mix who was surrendered to DPS after being rescued by a good samaritan who stepped in and saved him from a bad situation. While we may not know everything about this guy before he came to us, we know that everything has been coming up Acorn ever since he joined our rescue! This petite dude has been working on his gains, and can’t wait to find a loving forever home to show off his amazing personality in!    Below is a note from Acorn’s foster. “Acorn is a sweet and sensitive little guy who adores his chosen people more than anything else in the entire world. For such a small guy, it is understandable that the world around him is very big, but watching his confidence grow in the time he has been with me has been amazing to see. He likes to stay as close as possible to me as I go about my day and is the world’s most adorable shadow. Acorn is more of a lounger than a playing dog and is happy to snooze the day away in his doggy bed next to you as you work. This boy is so sweet and gentle and took to my house quickly. He has the cutest way of seeking attention, putting his front paws on the couch or my leg and gazing at me with his puppy dog eyes. He loves it when I scoop him up onto my lap for a cuddle.  Acorn wakes up at 7:30 and heads right outside for a walk and potty followed by breakfast. He trots along next to me as I get ready for work and then snoozes next to me as I start my day, getting up when I do to make sure he doesn’t miss the chance for a treat! He gets another meal around lunchtime before his afternoon walk and dinner. We unwind from the day as we watch TV and snuggle. Acorn turns in for the night around 10 PM and happily heads to his crate to dream of treats and snuggles ahead the next day!  Acorn gets along with dogs and would do well with a confident canine sibling who can continue showing him the ropes, but he would also thrive as a solo pup. He walks well on a leash but is still building his confidence around loud noises and sudden movements outdoors. Acorn is such a chill and loving companion once he warms up to you. I promise this guy will be your faithful buddy for life if you are lucky enough to earn his love!”   Acorn is only an option for those with prior dog experience, with shy dog experience prioritized. Another dog in the home would likely be the best fit for Acorn. Kids in the home should be over the age of 10 and understand the needs of a shy dog.  April 18, 2024, 12:48 pm

Story
Gertie and her puppies were sadly left at an overcrowded shelter. Thankfully we had room and made the 7 hour round trip journey to rescue her.  She is obviously a chiihuahua mix and we think 2-3 years old.  She is friendly, non aggressive with other dogs, and eager to be a part of a family.  Gertie is a happy girl in spite of irresponsible pet ownership and we know she can bring lots of joy to a loving famiy. Please fill out an application for Gertie.  https://forms.gle/L3Eo7K1Bu6PGNBsR7 For more info you can text Renee (650)224-6400.

Story
Holiday Cookie family. Oreo (mom) 2 pups Ginger Snap and Chocolate Chip and two other of their family Sugar Cookie and Snicker Doodle were all abandoned at a distant shelter when their previous elder guardian had health issues and had to move to a facility. They were all nervous but Oreo and puppy Sugar Cookie warmed up the fastest. Snicker Doodle is more timid and needs more time to adjust to feel safe. All are very sweet and once comfortable are friendly and enjoy attention. They had all their vet care vaccinations deworm Microchip and now relaxing and learning at their volunteer foster homes. Update from foster home: Sugar Cookie is very friendly and playful with Snickerdoodle around. She loves to attack squeaky toys. She is skittish around new situations or alone but also playful once comfortable. Both Sugar Cookie and Snicker Doodle are good dogs and love playing with each other. She would be happier being adopted with Snicker Doodle or have another friendly small dog at home. Need home with backyard. She needs training and time to learn to go on walks. Once outside of home she wants to run back inside. She adjusted and did well at home vacation boarding. Still not comfortable with walks yet with Harness. Need experienced person to do baby steps to lean and let her wear a harness and walk around yard then later see out front lawn area. She is not as treat motivated as Snicker Doodle.April 16, 2024, 1:30 am

New photos and more info. to come. Dec 2023 Update: Snicker Doodle is shy and nervous at first but warms up and then friendly. He is very fond of Sugar Cookie and loves to play with her. He also loves to lay on his back and chill with his human on the sofa. He tries to chase the neighborhood cats so no cats in home for him. He is friendly with other dogs once he gets to know them. Once he heals up from the neutering we will try to walks around the neighborhood. Snicker Doodle would do best in a home with another dog or best if adopted with Sugar Cookie. The two stick together all the time and comfort each other. Alone he is very nervous and skittish. Need time to warm up. For his happiness another dog at home is best. Need home with backyard. 1/13/24 update: He can zip around like a fool and then bask in snuggles. He is very apprehensive of new people. We are still working on the walks. He’s a stubborn guy. When he doesn’t want to do something he becomes dead weight. He won’t move. He loves to lay with his human and get snuggles. He doesn’t get along with our mixed breed chihuahua Toby but Toby doesn’t get along with many dogs either. He loves playing with Sugar Cookie so I think he would be ok with other dogs. He sleeps all night without barking he is anxious in new situations but he’s not a mean dog at all. He sheds only a little. He needs training and time to learn to go on walks. Once outside of his home he wants to run back inside. More of a home body due to being under socialized and was to isolated in home only. Must have a home with back yard. He did well at his vacation home boarding with other dogs. Trainer started to work with him with harness walk in back yard and he follows with treats. He is very treat motivated so easier to trained than Sugar Cookie for walks. Need experienced guardian to continue to work with him and baby steps to train to walk on leash. Start in backyard and work up to front porch/lawn area using treats.April 16, 2024, 1:30 am

They had all their vet care vaccinations and now relaxing and learning at their volunteer foster homes. 12/19/23 Update: Oreo is lovely! She is calm quiet and loves to sit on our lap and nap while we watch TV. She does fine in her pen when we leave for a few hours and sleeps in her crate at night. We even went in the spa for a few hours a few nights ago and she sat on the bench right next to us the whole time on our towels and never made a peep. She will bark when she hears other dogs barking outside but other than that she is very calm quiet and sweet. She loves to be in our backyard on warm days and lounge and soak up the sun. She has been a little nervous around other dogs because of her puppies probably but warms up eventually as long as the other dogs are calm. 3/21/24 Update: Oreo is an incredibly sweet and calm dog. She is super mellow and prefers to spend the majority of the day napping on or near myself or my husband. She has grown more confident and will play with smaller dogs and also does fine with our cat but she is much more interested in being with a human than other animals. Oreo goes on daily walks but is not high energy and is very happy to lounge in the sun or nap most of the day. She would make an excellent companion for anyone looking for a lap buddy or someone to spend a nice evening on the couch together.April 16, 2024, 1:30 am
