Story
Chihuahua Age: ≈ 4 years old Female, spayed 12 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 (includes spay/neuter, microchip, vaccinations) Mara was brought into a local by someone who found her. During her evaluation by shelter staff to access her suitability for adoption to the general public, they observed some high-value resource guarding with other dogs and people. She was also difficult to handle during her vet check. This is very typical of dogs that are fearful/stressed in a scary shelter environment. Because of these observations she was deemed “unadoptable” and could only be given to a rescue group experienced with behavioral issues. When we got her to our adoption center, she bonded very quickly with the volunteers, allowing them to handle her, give her affection and attention. In her foster home with a couple of other dogs, she does some lap guarding. The dogs in the home are all fed separately and the humans don’t typically bother the dogs while they are eating. There are quick, easy and effective methods to stop lap guarding (as well as high value guarding). Mara responds well to correction. She will need an experienced adopter that can effectively manage these issues. With a little time and patience, Mara could live with other dogs her size that don’t respond negatively to her guarding behavior. Otherwise, she likes people, likes attention, good on a leash, appears to be housebroken (but not too sure about using the doggie door in her foster home, yet). Please note that we don’t adopt any of our dogs out to homes with children under the age of 13. For more information about Mara, contact nobodysperfektdogs@gmail.com

Story
Chihuahuas Age: 4 yrs / 1 yr Females, spayed 9 / 7 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 (includes spay/neuter, microchip, vaccinations) Kanga and Roo came to us from the San Mateo SPCA. Kanga wasn’t at risk, and would have been available for adoption at the shelter. However, her surviving puppy (the other one died at the shelter), Roo, was special needs and was still nursing, so we had to take Kanga and the puppy, Roo, together. After separating them for a while once Roo was weaned, we decided to put them back together after Roo recovered from her surgeries. Kanga came from a very bad hoarding situation. She was very underweight (which probably contributed to the poor condition of her two puppies). She is very healthy now, and ready to be adopted. Roo showed signs of congenital birth defects in her legs (not surprising, given her rough start). Three of her legs were “good enough” for mobility, while the 4th leg was pretty messed up. We decided to do a series of surgeries to realign the bones on the worst leg. She is fully recovered and gets around pretty good (although, not sure that she could take long walks - maybe a stroller is in her future?) Kanga can be very shy and cautious when meeting new people, but when she does feel comfortable, she is super sweet and affectionate. Roo, as a puppy, loves everyone. Please note that we don’t adopt any of our dogs out to homes with children under the age of 13. For more information about Kanga & Roo, contact nobodysperfektdogs@gmail.com

Story
Chihuahua Age: 2 yrs old Female, spayed 5.5 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 (includes spay/neuter, microchip, vaccinations) Sissy was dropped off at the shelter “as a stray” by someone (sometimes it is people dumping their own dog but saying “they found it”). She was very scared at the shelter (at 5 lbs, it is understandable that she would be freaked out). She was difficult to handle at times by the staff, but she also failed her high value resource guarding test. The test mainly consists of giving the dog food or other high value items, then tease the dog with a rubber hand to see if the dog will bite the fake hand. Very few shelters still do this test, because it often doesn’t accurately test the dog’s demeanor in the real world, but this particular shelter (and some large well-known rescue organizations) still use it. She is a typical clingy small Chihuahua. For the most part, she is okay with the other small dogs in the home. However, if another dog is not treating her nicely, she will “return the favor” then it is game-on. She is not good with larger dogs. We have no idea about how she is with cats, but it is likely that she would be okay. It has been noticed that over-stimulated play with humans can result in some mouthiness / nipping - best to avoid that activity or involve a toy. If she is with another dog, they should be fed separately and avoid giving her treats if another dog is present. She came to the shelter with a broken tooth, that was pulled when she was spayed. She had a skin issues that was believed to be flea allergy dermatitis - treatable with flea control. In her first foster home, she got into an altercation with a larger dog that ended up in a dislocated knee. Even though we initially considered amputation, Sissy uses the leg and shows no signs of pain, so we kept it. Please note that we don’t adopt any of our dogs out to homes with children under the age of 13. For more information about Sissy, contact nobodysperfektdogs@gmail.com

Story
Chihuahua Mix Age: > 1 yrs old Male, neutered 7 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 (includes spay/neuter, microchip, vaccinations) Charlie was dropped off at the Berkeley Animal Shelter by someone who initially stated that they “found him.” Then it was discovered that person actually had the dog for a couple of months, so it was treated as an “owner surrender.” He has no real use of his back legs. They were froze/locked in a rigid position, so he used them to steady his back end, but he wasn’t able to actually move them in any useful way. X-rays of his spine showed a major deformity that he was likely born with. The shelter didn’t have the resources to care for this kind of disability. They called us before making the decision to euthanize him. We have determined that Charlie is incontinent (bowels and bladder) due to his condition. He mostly gets around by dragging his hind legs, and occasionally using his legs as “crutches”. The foster family hasn’t done a lot of work on getting him to use a wheelchair/cart. As a puppy he is very playful. He had to learn a lot of puppy manners while interacting with the other dogs in the home. He is doing pretty well in that area. Charlie would do well in a home with other friendly, playful dogs his size. Please note that we don’t adopt any of our dogs out to homes with children under the age of 13.
