Story
Meet Captain! He is a sweet boy who loves adventures and being with his people! He would do best in a home that can provide both mental and physical stimulation. He would love a home where there aren't many dogs around. We recommend someone who has experience with dogs as he will not be a good fit for first time dog owners. Ideally home would be in a more tranquil setting....all he wants to do is please you and snuggle up next to you while also getting some training.

Story
Chief is a smart and independent boy who loves nothing more than exploring the world. He does need time and patience and respect for his personal space in order to warm up to someone, but when he does he's extremely sweet. He can get overexcited to see unfamiliar people/dogs when on leash, but he has made many dog friends and prefers friends who are calmer and don't intrude too much into his space. Notes from a volunteer who took Chief out on a couple of outings. "We have been meaning to take long time Milo resident, Chief, out for awhile now. Chief is a 6 years old, border collie mix dog, who came from the Stanislaus area. Last weekend, we decided to take him and my small pups on a short walk from Milo to the downtown part of Pt Richmond. He did really well walking with us there. He is not a big fan of fast moving bikes headed in his direction though. He is a strong boy so it is important to keep a firm grip on his leash. He is a big fan of treats so that is helpful for training, distraction, etc... We weren't sure how he would do since this was our first time taking him out away from Milo so we kept a brisk pace walking by other people and dogs and gauged his reaction. He was very curious about all the noise and the people in the area. Today, we came back in hopes of taking him to the park for a hike. Unfortunately, it started to sprinkle off and on so we took him to the big Milo park down the street instead. He behaved well and really enjoyed being out at the park. We'll try for the hike the next time we stop by. Once Chief gets to know a person and trusts them, he is an awesome dog to be around. He is also smart and loyal. "

Story
Loki is a happy boy, playing with friends, running about, and giving hugs! He does better being outdoors in a fenced space, he likes most dogs after an introduction and chooses his playmates, typically other males it seems (that can be situational.) He and an old male Aussie and a young Great Pyr have a love triangle, wrestling, humping and chasing each other, they are super cute and silly, he has a strong bond to his buddies, both two-legged and four!! Loki takes his time to warm up to some, and is particular about handling and restraint, not taking it well from people he doesn't know. Loki has a healthy sense of adventure and not the best recall though when he has a runabout here at the Milo Sanctuary he comes back before long. A country life is definitely in order for him! He can be affectionate and gives great hugs. Loki has had physical and other forms of trauma in his life, Loki came to us with a badly broken tail/spinal injury, he's healed and happy guy given his own freedom of movement. He deserves a chance. A country home with adults. He is fine being a predominantly outdoor dog with a buddy. He does not like a harness. Come meet him at our sanctuary!

Story
Trixter is a good solid dog who looks to you for direction. He craves attention and affection. He is dog selective (gets along with some, but not all, dogs) and interacts well with people once he gets to know them. Trixter has "Stranger Danger" with many (but not all) people at first. But with a little time and treats, he is a lover. He would love to go hiking or running, and has good recall. He will require an experienced dog owner without children. He is a true "diamond in the rough." With the time and love he deserves, he will be your best friend.

Story
Fern is a 4-year-old female Border Collie, not just a pet but a family member. She's very affectionate and intelligent, capable of learning names, following complex commands, and quickly picking up new ones. Fern is house-trained, leash-trained, and has excellent recall. At home, she loves to cuddle, always resting her paw or head on you. Outdoors, Fern thrives on physical and mental challenges, enjoying off-leash runs in forests and beaches, always staying close. Her intelligence and sensitivity make her very attuned to human emotions, but also contribute to her nervousness in new situations. As a Border Collie, she needs a patient owner and does best in a pet and child-free home where she can be the center of attention. With our family dynamics changing due to a new baby, we're unable to give Fern the attention she deserves. If you’re looking for a loyal, smart companion, Fern is ready to join your home.

Good with kids, Good with dogs, Needs experienced adopter, House-trained, Spayed or Neutered, Shots are up-to-date,
Story
Bronx was adopted from the Humane Society of Silicon Valley (HSSV) on April 23, 2023. He was 11 weeks old and weighed 9.20 lbs. and presumed to be a Border Collie Mix but staff was unsure what he was mixed with. Since his adoption he has completed the required Puppy Training course provided by HSSV while also receiving continued training by his family. Bronx is potty trained, knows the basic commands (sit, stay, leave it, etc..) but could benefit from more extensive and regular training and strong leadership from pack leader or family. Bronx loves to run, fetch and socialize with other dogs and people. He has been trained to be both on and off leash and responds to commands when off leash; but keep in mind he's still a puppy and sometimes gets distracted and may need commands repeated. Bronx also can get a little over excited when it comes to meeting other dogs and people and may jump on them or at them to greet them. This is something that will need continuous work to be corrected.

Story
Nola is a super sweet and affectionate girl. She is slowly learning the world is not always a scary place but is still very nervous. She gets worried and tries to duck away when she hears loud noises. She warms up to people quickly with a proper introduction. Otherwise, she tends to be nervous of new people. Once you've earned her trust, she likes to show her affection - she will climb up onto if not corrected, and will jump into your lap and give you kisses. She is not really interested in other dogs and tries to keep her distance while on walks. She gets easily overwhelmed by energetic dogs, larger dogs, and groups of dogs. When introduced to another dog she is selective, so slow and careful introductions are a must. She will do best with an experienced owner who can help her build her confidence and allow her time to move at her own pace when it comes to making new human and dog friends. Her foster had the following to say (11/2023): "Her favorite things at the moment are her stuffed duck toy and chicken. You'll often find Nola on the floor of our living room rolling on her back while squeaking her duck. Nola has bonded strongly with myself and is continuing to warm up to the rest of the family. She would do better in a house with someone who works from home or is home most of the time. She prefers to be with her people but can be left alone. She is house trained. She will not ask to go out but will wait until she is let out. She likes to chase the squirrels in our backyard, given this we are not sure if she would do well in a home with cats."
