Story
Animal Information: Cooper is a 3-year-old, 7-pound Chihuahua who came to the Stanislaus shelter as part of an animal welfare case, where she and 18 other dogs were lovingly cared for by shelter staff while the District Attorney's office worked through the legal process. Once the dogs were finally released and available for rescue, we knew we had to help. Cooper, along with Freckles, Littles, and Tasha, all came from the same home. Although he's a little shy at first, he has been incredibly sweet with the shelter staff and just needs a little time to feel safe and let his personality shine. We can't wait to welcome him to the Pacific Northwest and show her what the good life is all about Foster Profile: Cooper, aka Fruit Bat, is a sweet, shy pup who has blossomed since arriving in Seattle. He lives happily with one human, another dog, and two cats and is gentle and submissive with everyone. Once he settles in, he is a total lovebug who wants to follow you around, cuddle, and give lots of kisses. His favorite thing in the world is affection, and he will happily bump his head into you for pets or roll around on you like a cat. Cooper has also discovered that food and toys are pretty great. He gets excited for mealtimes and playtime, is learning to play fetch, and loves tossing his toys around after dinner. He knows "boop," "sit," and "lie down," and gets the funniest Chihuahua zoomies before bed. He is a very quiet dog, easy to handle, and happily allows daily nail trims and teeth brushing. He is fully potty trained in his foster home and has been fantastic in his crate from day one. He sleeps in his crate overnight and when left alone and has done well for up to five hours. The outside world is still a little scary for Cooper, but he has made huge strides. He has gone from being afraid to leave the front door to regularly joining longer walks around Seattle, riding the bus and light rail, and exploring trails on weekends. He has even enjoyed three to four hour trail adventures and has the potential to be a wonderful hiking buddy. He walks well with both small and large dogs and generally wants to stay close to his pack. When something scares him, he may freeze for a moment or create some distance, but he is easy to redirect and continues to gain confidence with each new experience. Cooper would thrive with a patient, supportive person who can help him navigate new and scary things at his own pace. A confident resident dog would be a wonderful bonus, and he does very well with cats too. His biggest fears right now are unfamiliar people, loud noises, and big or fast moving vehicles. Cooper is perfectly happy being a cozy homebody, but he also loves getting out to explore. Most of all, he is a gentle, affectionate little guy who has come so far and is ready to keep discovering how wonderful life can be.
