Story
Apply here: http://athenscaninerescue.com/adoption-procedures/ Introducing Rain, our cute little wobbly friend! Rain is currently around a year old and weighs in at just about 35 pounds! Anyone who meets our sweet Rain can see that he is a special boy! You may notice that Rain walks a little differently than most puppies his age - he’s quite clumsy! A complete neurological and orthopedic evaluation at the University of Georgia didn’t show any specific abnormalities, so it is likely that Rain was born with several congenital issues that resulted in his quirky walk. He used to have some issues in the pottying department as well, but these are well controlled on a specific diet. At this time, Rain does not need any special medications or therapies to treat his unique condition. Just lots of love! Housebreaking, Crate-Training, and Commands Rain is currently working on both house and crate training. He needs a proper routine in order to not have accidents in the house, but manages to keep the house dry if he is taken out on schedule! It seems he has a grasp that potty = outside, but sometimes, he just can’t help himself, which is totally normal for a puppy! As far as the crate goes, that one is a bit easier. He will cry for just a bit reminding you that he’s there, but once he’s settled he’s good to go! He currently stays in the crate at night, for all his meals, and if his foster family goes out! Behavior around other Dogs, Cats, and Kids Because he’s a puppy, life's a breeze for Rain! He is curious and fun, and will play, play, play if you let him. He’s been around children from ages 3-14 and overall, he’s great other than some puppy nibbles. Chasing cats is a fun game, but will quickly stop if he’s corrected by the cat (or human!) And as far as other dogs go, he loves them! But he is a little too amped for playing so he may get on an older dog's nerves and have to be taught the house rules. Rain would not be a good candidate for a dog park because of his health needs, but would likely do well with trusted dogs in a private park setting! Behavior around People + Exercise Needs Rain is by all accounts your typical puppy. He loves to play! He loves people and is so friendly! Rain especially loves snuggles once he’s got his energy out! He’s not demanding about attention though and will leave you alone if you aren’t up for it in the moment. Rain is a hop, skip, and a sideways run (literally) away from being yours! Contact us today! Story
Apply here: http://athenscaninerescue.com/adoption-procedures/ PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING. PLEASE NOTE THAT DALLY CANNOT HAVE "FREE" ACCESS TO ANY SOURCES OF FOOD OR WATER. Welcome Dally! This beautiful girl was little more than skin and bones when she joined our program, but now she’s a “giant goober” (per foster mom; and yes, that’s the technical term, of course) who is loving life and living it to the fullest. Dally has mega esophagus, which means that without the help of gravity and some time spent upright after eating or drinking, she will regurgitate anything she consumes. We’ve got her outfitted with a special throne (okay, chair, whatever) for mealtimes now and she has steadily gained weight and is learning how to be a dog. (She also likes to put herself into the chair anytime she thinks she should get a snack. Hey, Mom. Mom! Mom! I’m in the chair! Feed me!!) She gets medication twice a day and needs to use her chair for meals, but other than that, she’s healthy and and a typically developing dog. At just over a year and technically still a puppy, Dally has proven to be smart and quick to learn the rules! She is fully housebroken, keeps her crate clean all night long, and will reliably “sit” or “leave it” upon command. Dally lives with humans of all ages, other dogs, cats, and has been around farm animals. No worries, she loves them all! Everyone is very exciting and a potential new BFF. She is still learning her own size and how to calm down, so while she loves everyone and everything, her exuberance could be a touch overwhelming for other small creatures. Currently she is learning to listen to the corrections of the cats in her household, because although they’re super fun to chase, sometimes they would like her to stop. Again, she’s still young, so we expect with consistent training she will settle down a bit. Foster mom describes Dally as the perfect combination of loving everyone yet not being needy or clingy. Do you want to play with her? Right on! Just want her to settle down a bit? She’s happy to just snuggle in nearby. She “talks” to her humans, using a variety of sounds that are hilarious. Dally is down for new adventures and Netflix binges, alike. Currently she enjoys a couple of short walks each day. She will not be well-suited to super long excursions, especially in warmer weather, as dehydration is a concern (and taking her chair on a hike would be… awkward). But she’s ready to meet new friends, explore new toys, and says that sometimes slowing down a bit is how you savor the good stuff. Don’t dilly-dally; contact us today about meeting Dally! Story
Apply here: http://athenscaninerescue.com/adoption-procedures/ Welcome Carter! Meet the newest (adoptable) husky addition to the Athens Canine Rescue family, Carter! Born in March of 2017, he’s the most spry five year old husky you may have ever met. He weighs in at around 50 pounds, give or take a few depending on dinner! Carter has been with our program for a few months now, but was unavailable due to being treated for heartworms. He has officially been declared heartworms free and is now ready for his forever home! He has no special medical needs other than needing to be on monthly heartworm preventative (as all dogs should be!) Housebreaking, Crate-Training, and Commands Carter is housetrained! He sleeps through the night (no midnight pee breaks here!) and even knows to use the bells to signal that he has to go outside! As far as the crate goes… Carter is a bit of a canine houdini. With that in mind, he does well in a room that has been dog/toddler proofed when left alone. Carter knows a decent amount of tricks, too! If he had a resume, we could include: sit, shake, wait, lay down as mastered skills! We’re trying to teach him “inside voice” but that one’s more of a… dream skill. Behavior around other Dogs, Cats, and Kids Carter lives in a foster home with four other dogs and is doing great! He can be a little demanding with play but does well when corrected by his siblings when they’re not ready for it. When he first moved into his foster home, he was constantly pestering his canine siblings to play, but now that he’s relaxed a bit, he’s more likely to independently play adjacent to them ignoring him. Prior to coming to ACR, Carter lived with children and did well with them. Since then, he’s met several children at events and has done great with them! He’s a very patient and kid-friendly dog! Behavior around People Carter has never met a stranger! He gives lots of kisses and is so excited to get loved on. He loves being close to his human friends and will try his very best to be a covert lap dog. He’d be an excellent companion for someone who enjoys having a personal, portable space heater. Exercise Needs Carter, true to his husky heritage, is an active guy. He loves to be go, go, go all the time! He will need heavy duty play sessions and mental stimulation in order to keep him happy. He loves to play alone with his “spiky ball”. Carter is ready to meet his new family! Are you ready to meet Carter? Contact us today! Story
Bailey  is a 2.5 year-old Maltese mix .  He was surrendered  because  his owner  was not prepared for the energy of a young puppy .  He is all legs and is still like a gangly Colt at this point.  He's very kissy and huggable once he gets to know you,  but he also has lots of energy and so will need a fenced-in backyard.  Bailey is not good with children, so he would be best in a home with adults and no kids under 13.  He weighs 15 pounds. He is house trained (not perfect) and crate trained. Alcovy dogs are spayed/neutered, up to date on all vaccines, up to date on heart-worm preventative and flea preventative and micro-chipped. If interested in adoption, please complete an online application on Alcovy Pet Rescue's website at www.alcovypet.com. You must have a vet reference to adopt. We verify the care of past/current pets. Applications without a vet reference will not be approved for adoption.
