Story
Thumper is a sweet girl that is good with other dogs and human kiddos! Her temp foster says she is an easy peasy foster. She offered to give her a place to crash so we could get her out of the shelter but did already have travel plans, so wasn't able to commit long term. Thumper walks great on a leash and goes into her crate when told.  She is still having a few accidents in the home, but is working on that. Not unusual for a pup with so many changes. Thumper is looking for a foster or foster to adopt as she still needs to get her vetting completed.  https://www.rescuecrew.org/how-to-become-a-foster.html ##1826342##

Story
Hi! My name is McGruff and I am from a shelter in Oklahoma! From McGruff: Single white male seeking long term committed relationship. I have beautiful expressive brown eyes and curly blond hair. I love to snuggle. I will keep you warm all four seasons. I enjoy walks... really ANYTHING to be with you! I will protect you from squirrels and strangers. From the foster: McGruff is a sweet boy who wants to be with his person at all times. So much so, he has separation anxiety. He is doing well with his current medications but in the past has been destructive when left alone. He does well in his crate so it is important that when he is left that he is put in his crate so he isn't destructive. It would be best that his person is mainly home (retired, work from home) He has decided squirrels are the enemy, the furry beasts do love to torment him... (they know he is on a tether and stay just beyond his reach). He gets along fine with the other dogs in the house. He will share dog beds and lap space. No shared walls for this guy. At times he will sing the song of his people. (squirrels, rabbits, walkers bring a need to sound the alarm...) He is getting better at calming when guests arrive and does have medication that he can take prior to known stressful situations. He is a sweetie and just wants to be loved and to be with his person. Are you ready to be his everything? Medical Information: Since my arrival at Secondhand Hounds I've been seen at the SHH Veterinary Center and my medical team addressed a few things my adopter should know about! At my first exam, the Vet noticed I needed dental surgery, which was performed on 8/23/23. I had 7 teeth extracted, but I recovered well and my adopter should monitor oral health with my primary care vet in the future. My adopter should also monitor my knees as it was noted that I have grade 1 Medial Patellar Luxation on both knees (rear legs) that can be controlled or supported with joint supplements, however this is something that should be monitored by my adopter with my primary care vet in the future as well. There were a few masses noted, one on my neck and one on my scrotum. The mass on my neck was drained, determined to be benign and no surgical intervention was required. The mass on my scrotum was excised, submitted to a pathologist for testing and it was determined to be a low grade mast cell tumor. The SHH Vet says removal with wide enough margins like I had will most likely be curative. My foster has been working with me on separation anxiety and I have done well on a daily anxiety treatment called Fluoxetine. This medication may be needed life long depending on my needs in my new home. I'm sure my foster mom would be happy to talk more about this with a potential adopter!

Story
Hi, I'm Comet. I am from Kentucky. From the foster: Comet is such a good boy. One of the easiest fosters we have had. He is friendly and loves all people and dogs. His favorite things to do is to lay outside and soak up the sun. He gets the wiggles when we pick up his leash because he absolutely loves his walks. We do not have a fenced backyard but Comet does so well on a leash that we look forward to our walks together. If you are looking for a mature gentleman for your household, Comet is it. No puppy shenanigans and has great house manners. Medical Bio: During my exam at the SHH Vet Center, my vet heard I had a heart murmur. My chest x-rays were sent to a cardiology specialist and it was determined that my murmur is caused by something called Mitral Valve Endocardiosis or a type of heart disease commonly seen in smaller breed dogs like me. At this stage, the vets don't see any heart enlargement or other issues stemming from this disease and I will be able to manage this well with no cardiac medical care needed or recommended, just annual check ups with my primary care veterinarian. They may also want to know this so they can use cardiac safe medications or protocols for me in the future. I hope to meet you soon, I'm looking forward to getting settled into my forever home! My adopters should also know that it was determined that I will need a dental procedure for some potential extractions and will possibly need repair on my oronasal fistula. SHH will schedule this procedure as soon as possible, but this may take place after I have been welcomed into my new home.

Age: Approximately 10 years old Weight: 18 lbs Dog friendly: Yes Cat friendly: TBD Kid friendly: Yes Potty trained: Good on a schedule Crate trained: Working on it I have fostered a few dogs throughout the last couple of years, and have fallen for all of them. My current foster boy is Lucas. He has stolen my heart. He had a beautiful story. Living with a caring owner along with his mom, and two brothers. Spending time with him, you know he was well cared for and loved. Unfortunately, he lost his owner. When that happened he, his brothers and mom found themselves in a shelter, and then eventually rescued by Healing Hearts and brought to Minnesota. How confusing It had to be for these four pups. Lucas also had an unexpected medical situation that came up a few weeks after arriving. He was brought to the vet, and they confirmed that Lucas had lost his sight. They say that dogs adjust very well, and I have to say, he really has! He is able to navigate quite well, jumping into the bed, walking around the house finding his way around the yard. I keep an eye when he is outside, and if I feel he’s trying to find me, I call his name. He comes running. I know Lucas is aware of all the changes. The evidence is that he needs his person. He finds security being with them. I feel the right home for him would be a place where he is not left alone for long periods. At this point it is stressful for him. Lucas is good with other dogs. We have two beagles, and they all get along well. He is also good around children. I think he is the perfect combination of chill and energy. He has become a wonderful shop dog (I have a retail store). He mostly takes it easy in his bed. But he is always up for a nice walk too! We usually go for a couple of miles together, and he seems to really enjoy it. He is great to hang out with and watch movies in the evening. A good snuggle buddy. If you’re looking for a best buddy companion, Lucas could be the right one for you. He really is such a sweet boy Adoption Fee: $425  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet. INTERESTED IN MEETING ME? Age: Approximately 2.5 years Weight: 19.80 pounds Dog friendly: yes Cat friendly: unknown/not tested Kid friendly: yes Potty trained: yes, on a schedule Crate trained: yes Blaze is very sweet and he loves all people. Snuggle-time is one of his favorites. He likes other dogs but can sometimes get overly friendly and needs more help to understand their signals. Blaze is playful and loves his toys; he is also energetic and inquisitive and should be in a puppy-proofed environment. He's housetrained on a schedule and is accustomed to being crated when humans are not home, though he would prefer having free run of the house. He does well in the car and loves going on adventures. Blaze also loves going on walks and is used to wearing a harness. However, he would benefit from more leash training as he still likes to pull, especially when he sees squirrels or other dogs. He has not been around cats in his foster home but would probably chase cats that run or are not dog savvy. He might be able to coexist with a dog-savvy cat. He will bark or alert at strange noises and will bark when playing. However, he is not a persistent barker. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.   Gus is a sweet young Shih Tzu. He's about 2 years old and about 22lbs. He is good with other dogs and cats. He had come from a neglectful background and is kind of shy at first. Gus is doing great at his foster home. He is doing great on potty training. We think Gus needs a fenced in yard, and somone who likes to take him for walks.  Gus is just the sweetest gem. Though he is a little shy at first, he is extremely affectionate once bonded and you can see his happiness as he gazes up into your eyes, wags his tail, or plays around. He loves rolling on his back for belly rubs and will throw his body into your lap to do so.   He has a spunky energy and LOVES to run the span of a fenced-in yard while taking short breaks to investigate every corner. His zoomies will bring smiles and laughs to his family and his rolling around in the grass afterwards is the cherry on top! It’s all so fun to watch. He loves playing with his toys second to zoomies. Gus adores toys and loves to chew on them (best to hide away non-toys as he learns what's what). Once he adjusts to home life a bit more, he will likely love walks and exploring new sights and smells.  He is easily redirected and very smart.  With positive reinforcement and a routine, he has started to learn about going to the bathroom outside and doing great! He sleeps through the night, does great on stairs, and is OK being picked up.  He is such a good boy with a sweet little heart and deserves so much love!   Interested in adopting? Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Rockford or Chicago, IL areas and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten.
