Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Story
Sadie is 5 years old and weighs 11 lbs. She is white and red in color. Sadie is up to date on vaccines and is spayed and just recently had a dental and just finished all her meds.   She has been dealing with alopecia, but it is under control and now has no hair loss.  You will need to continue giving her Omega 3 and a healthy diet.  If there’s a reoccurrence of hair loss she may need to see a vet dermatologist. Sadie is a sweet little girl.  She’s very loving and scared at the same time as she came from a mill.  She snuggles up to her foster at bed time and needs to be close. She gets along with her pups and isn’t aggressive at all.   Her personality is just now coming out, she gets so excited when she sees her foster  and when it’s time to eat and at snack time.   When she wags her tail her whole bottom wiggles, so cute.     She will follow you around when outside and keep a close eye on you.  Sadie isn’t fully house trained, she loves to mark, but since her spay, it has reduced.  In the house we still use doggy diapers.  She’s still learning the word NO.  More training will be required, along with leash training.   She loves to be called a good girl. She gobbles her food, and tends to throw it up afterwards, so until she slows down on her own, she will need a Slow-Feed Dog Bowl.   The perfect home for Sadie;      Someone who will enjoy her as much as she will enjoy you.  Preferably someone who is home a lot.  No small children but older is fine.   An established dog in home to help teach her how to continue to be a dog.  She watches her fosters dogs and catches on fast, but she is still adjusting to a home and humans.    A calm home is best.  She loves to sleep in bed, a crate is not recommended     Sadie will feel more comfortable sleeping in your bed.  She doesn’t like to be alone.  We have enjoyed and love fostering her.     If you think Sadie might be the perfect fit for you, please apply!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.September 3, 2024, 2:56 pm

Story
Hi! I'm Zoey! I am from Alabama. From her foster; Zoey is a big package in a tiny body. She is a balance of sweet and sass. She will ensure your lap is full and warm and that you have plenty of kisses (they're a bit - ok, a lot- stinky right now but will have a dental). She will protect you with her voice and will melt your heart with her gaze. She would love to sleep with you but will sleep next to the bed if necessary. She has 'marked' a bit in her foster home but is getting better about eliminating outside. She gets along well with the other small dogs in her foster home but would welcome being queen of the castle as an only dog. With her small size, an adult only home is suggested. Zoey's dental will be included as part of her adoption fee when completed as scheduled by The Bond Between Vet Center.

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Maycie and Teddy are an adorable bonded pair of siblings who are ready to bring their playful and loving energy into your home! At around 11 pounds each, they are the perfect size for cuddles and playtime. They were surrendered to rescue because their previous family had very young children and consequently Maycie and Teddy came second to the children. The family didn’t have the time to devote to Maycie and Teddy, and the children were to too young to understand how to interact with dogs, creating a negative experience for the dogs. Maycie is a charming, 6 year old little lady with a soft tan and white coat that perfectly complements her big, expressive puppy dog eyes. She is full of life and loves to be playful, with a particular fondness for toys, fetching with her mini tennis balls, and chasing bunnies in the yard. Maycie is also a cuddle enthusiast, often found snuggling up with her foster dad or keeping watch by the bay window. She’s doing great with potty training and is always excited for mealtime - dinner is definitely one of her favorite parts of the day. Teddy, with his cool chocolate and silvery coat, brings a calm and gentle presence to the pair. He is 5 years old. His sweet, soft stares are his way of communicating what he wants, and he loves to snuggle under a blanket with his human companions. Teddy is very much a follower of his sister Maycie and loves to mimic her playful antics. Breakfast is his favorite meal, and he enjoys going for walks and joining in on all the fun. Together, Maycie and Teddy make a fantastic duo who adore each other and their human companions. They get along wonderfully with their foster siblings and are friendly towards everyone they meet, whether human or dog. They are excellent walkers (though their manners would benefit from some leash training) and are always eager to jump in the car for a ride. They are both doing great with potty training and enjoy exploring the yard! In their previous home, they did not have a good experience with small children, so for that reason they would do best in a home where there are no small children, whether living there or visiting. The following are requirements for Maycie and Teddy’s adoption: · An active family who will include both Maycie and Teddy in their daily activities and give them plenty of playtime and exercise. They need a family who is home much of the day and will give them the attention and love they deserve - they always want to be with their family. · Because they do not do well with small children, an adults only home would be best for them. But a family with children over the age of ten, who understand how to be gentle and respectful of small dogs, will be considered. · Maycie and Teddy love to cuddle, so their new family should be ready for lots of snuggling, whether it’s on the couch or under the bed blankets. They're often found nestled under their foster dad's work desk, gently asking to be held throughout the day! · They love each other and are used to being the only pets in the house, but could also get along well with another small, friendly canine companion. · They would really enjoy having a fenced yard, but would be fine in a home where they get frequent walks. · Live within 30 miles of Roseville, MN. · Agree to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September each year. Maycie and Teddy are both spayed and neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Health Note: Both Maycie and Teddy are in great health. Teddy has a history of liver shunt surgery, but recent blood work shows he is doing exceptionally well and there is little concern for this condition. Both dogs are scheduled for dentals on October 11th with the rescue’s veterinarian, which will be covered by the rescue. Teddy will also have a cherry eye repair done at the same time as his dental work. Their adoption fee is $640.00 plus $46.04 in sales tax, totaling $686.04. To meet them, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see them and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southdale PetCo in Bloomington, MN. Maycie and Teddy are eager to start the next chapter of their lives with a loving family. If you think you can provide them with a wonderful home, they would love to meet you

Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Petty is a male, 14 pound Shih Tzu/Bichon mix (also known as a teddy bear) born in December, 2023. He was surrendered to rescue because his previous family was not able to devote enough attention to him due to having a new baby and their changing work schedules. Petty is playful and loves to retrieve toys and balls. He spends considerable time handing his foster parents one of his toys so they will toss it for him to retrieve. He enjoys walks, and his foster parents usually walk him two times per day, up to a mile and a half each time. He loves to greet other dogs when going on walks, and is always friendly and welcoming. They also take him out about every 4-5 hours during the day and make sure that he goes potty. He enjoys exploring the back yard, and a fenced yard in which to relish having the freedom to explore off leash, while supervised would be perfect for him. Petty is a young little tyke, but very smart! He has learned commands such as “sit, down, stay and come”. He loves to please and would thrive with a family who is enthusiastic and will help him learn more. A puppy obedience class would be great for him, so we are hoping that his new family will continue to help him learn to become a stellar canine citizen and a wonderful family member. He follows his foster parents around the house and truly wants to be with them at all times. His foster dad says that Petty enjoys riding in the car, and will sit in the back seat quietly while looking out the window. But he thinks that Petty would prefer actually driving instead! Petty wants to go wherever you go, so having a family who will include, and enjoy, having him in their daily activities would be ideal for him. He is very affectionate and his family is the center of his life. Following are the requirements for Petty’s new family: · Petty is still a puppy. Because Shih Tzus often live 16+ years, applications will only considered from age appropriate individuals who will be able to provide the care and activity necessary for the rest of his life. · A family who can be home with Petty for much of the day for companionship and also to enable him to go outside every 4-5 hours during the day. · Petty needs an active family who can provide, and enjoys, the high energy of a puppy. This includes long, brisk, daily walks and providing training, activity and the stimulation needed for a dog of his age. · A secure fenced yard would be great, but is not a deal breaker as long as Petty can have other means of outdoor activity. · An adults only family, or one with children over the age of 10 who have experience and understand how to interact with a small dog, will be considered. · Petty does well with other small dogs in the family, but he would be perfectly fine as an only pet. If there are other dogs in the family, it would be best if they have a similar energy level and engagement as Petty. · Live within 30 miles of Inver Grove Heights, MN. · Agree to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September each year. Petty is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm/flea preventative. His adoption fee is $470.00 plus $40.07, for a total of $510.07. To meet Petty, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southdale PetCo in Bloomington, MN.

Story
Hello world!  My name is Siobhan and I think we should all agree that I am the baby of the house.  I love when you cuddle me, snuggle me close, and cradle me in your arms ALL DAY LONG.  Not realistic?  Oh.  Can we just agree to lots and lots of tummy rubs then? Aside from receiving all the loves you’ll give me, I really like playing with tennis balls and my stuffed animals.  My foster mom says I’m a pro at my housetraining.  Zero accidents.  Score one treat for me!  And when she is at work I’m in my kennel all by myself for up to 5 hours a day with no issues.  Score two treats for me!  I even sleep in there at night.  Can I get a third treat for that?  I know basic commands such as sit and wait.  Leashes don’t bother me either.  Can we keep going with the treats please?  If you can't tell, I am VERY food motivated.  Watch my video of my foster teaching me "wait" and "go".  Yum! One thing I don’t really like is a lot of noise and activity, so I would like a space that offers some quiet and routine.  Being around other dogs and small animals or little people makes me nervous (teens are Siobhan approved).  So I think a home where I’m the only furry friend would make me happiest.  But do you know what that means?  I don’t have to share my toys or belly rubs with anyone.  Sounds like the perfect home to me! ##1995776##

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you for stopping by to see me!  Please fill out an application to set up  a private meeting.    Hey there, I’m Archie! I may be a senior, but let me tell you, I’ve still got plenty of love and energy to go around. I’m a total indoor dog—I mean, who needs the great outdoors when you’ve got all the cozy comforts of home, right? Whether it’s rain or shine, I’m perfectly content to do my business outside and then hurry back indoors for some quality snuggle time. Toys? Oh, I can’t get enough of them! Soft, crinkly, you name it—I’ll play with anything you give me. And when it comes to treats, well, let’s just say I’ve never met one I didn’t like. Now, about that fenced yard situation—I’m not so sure I need one. Sure, I enjoy the occasional walk, but I’m not dependent on it for bathroom breaks. I’m more of a in-and-out kind of guy when it comes to outdoor activities. Plus, I’m not the best on a leash and new things can make me a little nervous, so having a safe and secure yard where I can play without worry sounds like a dream. But let me tell you, when it comes to snuggles, I’m the absolute best. I’ll cuddle up with you for hours on end, bringing joy and warmth to your home every single day. So if you’re looking for a loving companion who’s just as happy playing with toys as he is snuggling up on the couch, then look no further—I’m your guy, Archie, ready to bring a whole lot of love into your life! *Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.    ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there***Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.If you have other questions about me you can email Underdog Rescue at <inquiries@underdogrescuemn.com> ADOPTION EVENTS:      Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend.  Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved. ADOPTION PROCEDURE: The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website: http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/adoptionprocess/   Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.  All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions. FOSTER CARE: All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience.  If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website  www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications  and fill out a foster application. NUTRITION: Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets.  All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet.  All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal.
