Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Story
Sadie is 5 years old and weighs 11 lbs. She is white and red in color. Sadie is up to date on vaccines and is spayed and just recently had a dental and just finished all her meds.   She has been dealing with alopecia, but it is under control and now has no hair loss.  You will need to continue giving her Omega 3 and a healthy diet.  If there’s a reoccurrence of hair loss she may need to see a vet dermatologist. Sadie is a sweet little girl.  She’s very loving and scared at the same time as she came from a mill.  She snuggles up to her foster at bed time and needs to be close. She gets along with her pups and isn’t aggressive at all.   Her personality is just now coming out, she gets so excited when she sees her foster  and when it’s time to eat and at snack time.   When she wags her tail her whole bottom wiggles, so cute.     She will follow you around when outside and keep a close eye on you.  Sadie isn’t fully house trained, she loves to mark, but since her spay, it has reduced.  In the house we still use doggy diapers.  She’s still learning the word NO.  More training will be required, along with leash training.   She loves to be called a good girl. She gobbles her food, and tends to throw it up afterwards, so until she slows down on her own, she will need a Slow-Feed Dog Bowl.   The perfect home for Sadie;      Someone who will enjoy her as much as she will enjoy you.  Preferably someone who is home a lot.  No small children but older is fine.   An established dog in home to help teach her how to continue to be a dog.  She watches her fosters dogs and catches on fast, but she is still adjusting to a home and humans.    A calm home is best.  She loves to sleep in bed, a crate is not recommended     Sadie will feel more comfortable sleeping in your bed.  She doesn’t like to be alone.  We have enjoyed and love fostering her.     If you think Sadie might be the perfect fit for you, please apply!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.October 8, 2024, 12:11 am

daily walk and plenty of interactive playtime. Her family must be able and willing to provide this for her every day. 2. A small, playful dog of equal energy would be great for Bella. She enjoys playing with another dog and thoroughly enjoys other canine companionship. 3. A fenced yard would be a bonus, but is not a deal breaker. Because Bella loves to run and explore, she would enjoy a secure area in which to do so under supervision. 4. A family who is home much of the day and will include her in their daily activities. Bella attaches easily to her people and just wants to be with them. 5. An adults only family; children over the age of ten who understand how to interact gently with a small dog will be considered. 6. A family who will understand, be patient, and continue helping Bella with her house training. She is doing well while in foster care, but it is not guaranteed that she will be housetrained when she is adopted. 7. Adoptive family should live within 45 miles of the Twin City area so Bella’s foster mom can schedule a home visit. 8. Adoptive family must commit to attend the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion of Minnesota held in September each year. Bella will be available for adoption near the end of November due to necessary upcoming surgeries. But applications for adoption are being accepted now. She is scheduled to be spayed November 11th. She is currently in heat, so her spay had to be postponed for two months for medical safety. At the time of her spay she will also have her left cherry eye repaired. as a red, swollen mass on the lower eyelid near the nose resembling a cherry. The official name is a prolapse of the third eyelid gland. To meet Bella, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see her and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southtown PetCo in Bloomington, MN

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Reggie is an 11 pound, male neutered Shih Tzu mix who was found as a stray in northern MN. Although we don't know where Reggie is truly from, we do know that he has been a joyful addition to our rescue already. Reggie is VERY playful and loves to be entertained. If you are looking for a couch potato, who just content to be with you all day while you watch TV, Reggie is NOT for you! He spends the majority of his time right near you or trying to play with you. He is a non-stop ball of energy. You might think he would play hard, sleep hard, but noooo..... he plays hard, naps a little, and then goes right back to playing. He will definitely need an equally playful sibling/doggy companion in his new home so that he can burn some of that energy! He would prefer to be alpha, but he also is great at listening to queues from other pets when he's being too much. He also has HOPS - he will climb on or jump on just about anything. During his “down time”, he enjoys watching what is happening outside, and his favorite place is the back of the couch looking out the window. But he has also found his way onto the dining table via the chairs when his foster parents weren’t looking. He needs to learn good indoor manners, so his new family must be patient and willing to train him in appropriate behavior. He loves to be outside with you and meet other dogs. He will bark at other dogs on walks, but as soon as he meets the dog, he will want to play. His foster mom has been working on re-focusing him during walks so that he checks in with her instead of focusing on the dog coming by. He also enjoys meeting other people; he’s just a really friendly little guy. He has almost mastered potty training, but still needs to be let out regularly every 4-5 hours. His new family must continue to work with Reggie, and be able to provide a frequent, regular potty schedule. Reggie is a young and very active little man and loves his foster parents’ fenced yard because it gives him room to run and play, but he does need you with him and you will should encourage him to go potty! Reggie has not had much training and would greatly benefit from puppy training classes. He does understand the word “no”, but not much else! He’s a smart little guy and loves to please, and will be happiest when he knows what is expected of him. He must have positive discipline and training so that he can be a secure, enjoyable member of his new household. His new family must make the commitment to actively participate and be consistent with his training. These are the requirements for Reggie’s new home: 1. Reggie is still a very young dog. Because Shih Tzus often live 16+ years, applications will only be considered from age appropriate individuals who will be able to provide the care and activity necessary for the rest of his life. 2. Reggie must go to a family that already has an equally active, playful, friendly small dog who would welcome a constant playmate. This is essential for his happiness, as well as his family’s, as being part of his new household. 3. A family who can be home with Reggie for much of the day for companionship and also enable him to go outside every 4-5 hours during the day. 4. An active family who can provide, and enjoys, the high energy of a puppy/young dog. This includes long, daily walks and providing training, activity and the stimulation needed for a dog of his age. 5. Either have had substantial experience in training a dog, or commit to participating with Reggie in formal training classes. This is a must for his Reggie, and his family’s, enjoyment in his new home. 6. A secure fenced yard would be great, but is not a deal breaker as long as Reggie can have other means of outdoor activity. 7. An active adults only home, or a home with children over the age of 10 will be considered, based upon their previous experience with small dogs. 8. Live within 40 miles of Coon Rapids, MN. 9. Agree to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September each year. Reggie is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm/flea/tick preventative. His adoption fee is $420.00 plus $35.81, for a total of $455.81. To meet Reggie, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southtown PetCo in Bloomington, MN.

Are you an active home looking for a sweet pup to walk and play with? If so, read about beautiful Gracie! Gracie is a one year old, 12 pound Shih Tzu. She is spayed and healthy as can be! Because she is a puppy, she is all play and full of energy. She is still learning how to be a well-mannered dog, but she is a fast learner and eager to please. As with any puppy, we strongly recommend taking her to a behavior training class. She is well socialized and gets along with other dogs and people, although she can be shy at first. Gracie is accustomed to 3-4 walks a day, and lots of playing fetch with her toys and balls. She is not yet at an age where she is content to just “be”, so her owners must to have the time to interact with her and keep her entertained. If left alone for long periods of time, she will find things to get into and chew on them! She is given a soft Kong now with a few treats inside and that keeps her busy for a while. Her foster mom calls her a little scamp because she is so delightful and such a happy girl! At night she is a calm sleeper right next to you in bed, and during her “down” times during the day she loves to curl up next to your lap. She is quite a cuddler once she gets to know you. Gracie is a good eater and is very food motivated, so you need to really be aware of limiting the quantity and variety of her treats. Gracie also is really good in the car, so she would be a good traveler and you can include her in most of your daily activities and excursions. In summary, Gracie is a very loving, sweet, adorable girl who needs a home where the owners can interact and spend a lot of time engaging her energy and curious nature. She cannot be left alone more than 4 hours a day even if there is another dog in the home, and needs a walk and about 30 minutes of playtime every 4 hours. She does get anxious without her person/people, so it would be best if there is someone who is home most of the day with her. Another small, playful, well-mannered dog as a companion and a role model would be very helpful to her. The following are requirements for Gracie’s new home: · Because Shih Tzus often live 16+ years, applications will only be considered from age appropriate individuals who will be able to provide the care and activity necessary for the rest of Gracie’s life. · Due to Gracie’s high energy level and some separation anxiety, she must have a family who is home much of the time or can come home every 4 hours to give her a long walk and play with her for at least 30 minutes each time. · Another well-mannered, small dog of equal energy level in the house would be a plus, but not an absolute, to help her with the separation anxiety and her need for playful canine interaction. · Her new family must be active, but their activity should include Gracie, and something she enjoys! A lot of people running in and out raises her stress level. · An adults only home would be best, but a home which includes children over the age of ten will be considered, based upon their previous experience with small dogs. · Her family must commit to keeping her on a housetraining schedule (at least every 4 hours. · Continue basic and socialization training (she already knows “sit” and “wait” and a little “come”!), but structured training classes would be ideal. · Must live within 45 miles of Bloomington, MN. · Willing to keep in touch and follow-up with the foster parent, and especially to attend the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September every year. Gracie is spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Her adoption fee is $420.00 plus $35.81 sales tax for a total of $455.81. To meet Gracie, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you for stopping by to see me!  Please fill out an application to set up  a private meeting.    Hey there, I’m Archie! I may be a senior, but let me tell you, I’ve still got plenty of love and energy to go around. I’m a total indoor dog—I mean, who needs the great outdoors when you’ve got all the cozy comforts of home, right? Whether it’s rain or shine, I’m perfectly content to do my business outside and then hurry back indoors for some quality snuggle time. Toys? Oh, I can’t get enough of them! Soft, crinkly, you name it—I’ll play with anything you give me.  I do not need a fenced yar, as long as you always go out with me.. Sure, I enjoy the occasional walk, but I’m not dependent on it for bathroom breaks. I’m more of a in-and-out kind of guy when it comes to outdoor activities. Plus, I’m not the best on a leash and new things can make me a little nervous, so having a safe and secure yard where I can play without worry sounds like a dream. But let me tell you, when it comes to snuggles, I’m the absolute best. I’ll cuddle up with you for hours on end, bringing joy and warmth to your home every single day. I am prone to allergies and ear infections. To keep these in check, I am on the Adored Beast Leaky Gut allergy protocol.  I also eat raw rabbit, which is the best protein source for me.  I love it so much, there are no words!  My allergies have also improved considerably since I started on this yummy food and supplements.  I do also have dry eye, fairly common to my breed and I just need an eye drop in each eye, twice a day.  I don’t mind this at all because I know it will make my eyes more comfortable. So if you’re looking for a loving companion who’s just as happy playing with toys as he is snuggling up on the couch, then look no further—I’m your guy, Archie, ready to bring a whole lot of love into your life! P.S. My foster has chickens and ducks and I am fine with both, even when they free range around me. Based on this, I probably would not care about cats. *Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.    ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there***Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.If you have other questions about me you can email Underdog Rescue at <inquiries@underdogrescuemn.com> ADOPTION EVENTS:      Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend.  Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved. ADOPTION PROCEDURE: The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website: http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/adoptionprocess/   Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.  All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions. FOSTER CARE: All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience.  If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website  www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications  and fill out a foster application. NUTRITION: Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets.  All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet.  All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal.
