Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 1, 2024, 5:42 pm

Story
Hi, my name is Oscar! Oscar is a sweet and cuddly dog. All he wants in life is to please his person/people. He gets along great with dogs, cats and kids of all ages. He walks well on leash, is crate trained (he does prefer to sleep with his people in bed though), and potty trained. He is interested in marking in the home, but does great wearing a belly band. He does extremely well to please you, so he quickly listens and is easily redirected. He bonded quickly to our resident dog and cat. His favorite thing in life is to cuddle. He loves to hang out on his back with his belly exposed. If you're looking for a sweet, well mannered, and cuddly companion, Oscar is your dog!

Story
Hi my name is Riggy Moe and I am from Minnesota! Riggy Moe is a Senior Mini Schnauzer, she is very sweet and adorable!! She is full of personality and she is a social gal as she likes to make new friends. She does great with my other dogs as well. She also likes going for walks when the weather is nice. She is doing well with her housetraining and her crate training, I recently have let her run of my bedroom, kitchen and she has been doing well with that. She is used to sleeping on my bed with me as I have doggy stairs for her to use and she definitely let you know her place is on the bed, I affectionately call her my Sassy Princess! She is a wonderful companion dog who already has me wrapped around her little paw as I just adore her! From the Vet: Ms. Riggy Moe is a spunky senior gal ready to find her final forever home for her golden years. While she is not without some medical that will required monitoring with her adoptive homes primary DVM as would be typical with any senior pup. Based on all other physical exam findings, we expect that she will be a perfect senior adoptable dog for some one looking for an easy companion!

Story
In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Hi, my name is King, I am five years old and weigh almost seven pounds. I came into rescue from a breeder, where I unfortunately was kept indoors my entire life. So I haven’t been potty trained, or even learned about how wonderful being able to go outside and explore can be. But it’s been a bit cold, so my foster mom is helping train me on potty pads, and will go out for longer periods when the weather is a bit warmer. Because I led such a confined life, everything is new to me so I’m a little scared and nervous. I didn’t know what it was like to have a human touch me gently, but after a few days I let my foster mom pet me. Now I sit close to her and love her gentle touches. I had never walked on a leash before, but now a pro at it and am a fast learner. I enjoy other dogs and ideally I’d like a home with another dog so I have someone to play with. A home with a fenced yard would be super, but I would also be fine living in an apartment because I’m such a quiet little guy and can be somewhat of a couch potato. I’m too little to get up and down from furniture, and stairs are a new thing for me, but I’m a quick learner. Because I’m pretty shy, my new family must understand that I’ll need time to become comfortable in a new home and with new people. But with a little time I’ll be your snuggle bug, and want to be right by your side. I’ll greet you by running in circles and wagging my tail. I’ll also want to sleep with you. I spent most of my life in a kennel; it’s traumatizing for me, and I will cry or bark if you put me in a kennel. These are the requirements for my new family: 1. A quiet, adults only family who is home much of the day. 2. King is not housetrained, and his new family must be understanding and commit to his continued training. They must also understand that he has never been exposed to much of anything and will gradually introduce him to new situations and experiences. 3. Another small dog in the home would be great because King enjoys the company of another dog. 4. Agree to never put King in a kennel. 5. Live within 30 miles of Hopkins, MN. 6. Attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September. King is scheduled to be neutered and have entropian surgery within the coming weeks. Once he has recovered, he will be ready to go to his new home. He is current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. His adoption fee is $370.00 plus $33.39 sales tax for a total of $403.39. To meet King, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southtown PetCo in Bloomington, MN.

Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you. Meet Prince, who is an 8-year-old brown and white Shih Tzu Teddy Bear (part Shih Tzu and part Bichon Frise). He is fairly large at 30 pounds, but is not overweight and he does actually think and act like a "Teddy Bear". He is soft and cuddly and very gentle. He has been with one owner his entire life, but his owner has now gone into a retirement home and is unable to care for him. Prince is used to being with someone at home 24/7 and we will be looking for a family who is home all day. Prince enjoys daily walks, and one of the best things about Prince is that he is reliably house trained. He will definitely tell you when he wants to go out and if you ignore him, he'll keep trying to tell you. We hope his new family will have a fenced yard in which he can explore. He sleeps in his own bed at the end of his foster mom's bed but every once in a while, he jumps up onto her bed and curls up to go to sleep . PRINCE enjoys people and would be comfortable in a home with any number of individuals, including older, well behaved children. As mentioned, he is a gentle dog, and will greet other dogs, sometimes licking them with affection. He would be okay with another dog in the house as well. These are the requirements for Prince’s new family: 1. A family where someone is home almost all day. 2. A family with children over the age of ten who have experience with respectfully interacting with dogs will be considered. 3. A fenced yard would be great, but is not a deal breaker. If his new family doesn’t have a fenced yard, they must be able to walk him daily so that he has a chance to enjoy the outdoors. 4. Allow Prince to sleep on their bed if he chooses. 5. Would be fine being in household with another small dog. 6. Live within 25 miles of Edina, MN. 7. Try to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September. Prince has been neutered, is current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventive. His adoption fee is $320.00 plus $28.88 in sales tax for a total of $348.88. To meet Prince, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you for stopping by to see me!  Please fill out an application to set up  a private meeting.  Mochi is an 11&#226&#128&#145pound Shih Tzu with a whole lot of personality packed into her tiny frame. She may be a senior, but she certainly doesn’t act like it—this girl has plenty of pep in her step. She chases squirrels, barks at birds, and loves spending time outside before deciding it’s time to curl up next to (or directly on top of) her human for snuggles. She’s playful, goofy, and full of life. Mochi happily fetches tennis balls and toys, adores belly rubs, and has a hilarious way of communicating her needs—if her food bowl is empty, she’ll run to it, then run to you, and bark as if to say, “Excuse me… did you forget something?” Her beloved rooster toy is her favorite and will go with her to her forever home. Mochi is friendly with new people, rides well in the car, and enjoys being part of the household action. She’s potty trained, crate trained (though she may bark a bit before settling), and is working on her leash skills. She’s not obedience trained, but she comes when called and has even sat on command once—classic Shih Tzu style. She’s smart, soft, affectionate, and made herself at home right away in her foster home. Because she loves the freedom to explore, Mochi will do best with a fenced yard where she can safely enjoy her outdoor adventures. She’s moderately active, moderately energetic, and the perfect mix of playful and cuddly. She may prefer to sleep with her humans rather than in a kennel, but she’s flexible and adapts well. Mochi is a sweet, spirited, lovable little dog who brings joy wherever she goes. She’s ready to brighten someone’s life with her charm, her silliness, and her endless affection. Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.   ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there*** Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.If you have other questions about me you can email Underdog Rescue at <inquiries@underdogrescuemn.com> ADOPTION EVENTS:      Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend.  Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved. ADOPTION PROCEDURE: The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website: http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/adoptionprocess/   Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.  All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions. FOSTER CARE: All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience.  If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website  www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications  and fill out a foster application. NUTRITION: Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets.  All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet.  All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal.
