Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Story
Sadie is 5 years old and weighs 11 lbs. She is white and red in color. Sadie is up to date on vaccines and is spayed and just recently had a dental and just finished all her meds.   She has been dealing with alopecia, but it is under control and now has no hair loss.  You will need to continue giving her Omega 3 and a healthy diet.  If there’s a reoccurrence of hair loss she may need to see a vet dermatologist. Sadie is a sweet little girl.  She’s very loving and scared at the same time as she came from a mill.  She snuggles up to her foster at bed time and needs to be close. She gets along with her pups and isn’t aggressive at all.   Her personality is just now coming out, she gets so excited when she sees her foster  and when it’s time to eat and at snack time.   When she wags her tail her whole bottom wiggles, so cute.     She will follow you around when outside and keep a close eye on you.  Sadie isn’t fully house trained, she loves to mark, but since her spay, it has reduced.  In the house we still use doggy diapers.  She’s still learning the word NO.  More training will be required, along with leash training.   She loves to be called a good girl. She gobbles her food, and tends to throw it up afterwards, so until she slows down on her own, she will need a Slow-Feed Dog Bowl.   The perfect home for Sadie;      Someone who will enjoy her as much as she will enjoy you.  Preferably someone who is home a lot.  No small children but older is fine.   An established dog in home to help teach her how to continue to be a dog.  She watches her fosters dogs and catches on fast, but she is still adjusting to a home and humans.    A calm home is best.  She loves to sleep in bed, a crate is not recommended     Sadie will feel more comfortable sleeping in your bed.  She doesn’t like to be alone.  We have enjoyed and love fostering her.     If you think Sadie might be the perfect fit for you, please apply!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 1, 2024, 5:42 pm

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Chico is an 11 pound, 8 year old male Shih Tzu/Yorkie mix. He was given to our rescue because his owner moved to an assisted living place where pets were not allowed. Chico is a lovable, easygoing companion who enjoys lounging in the living room. He has a calm demeanor, is gentle with children, and gets along well with both dogs and cats. He is fully house-trained and loves being close to his humans, following them from room to room with quiet devotion. He loves to explore the backyard and looks forward to long daily walks. Chico is a friendly little guy and likes to greet people and other dogs while out on walks. But what he loves most is joining his foster dog sibling outside to chase the resident rabbits and squirrels around the yard. A fenced yard for him would be wonderful because he really loves the freedom of being able to explore outdoors. His foster parents use a whistle to call him back to the door, and he responds to this well. Chico would be perfect for someone looking for a loyal companion or a mellow family pet. He’d thrive in a quieter home with lots of affection and a soft bed to call his own. A retired person or couple would be an especially great match for his low-key lifestyle. We are working with Chico to address a mild case of separation anxiety. He enjoys riding in the car and it would be great if his new family will include him in their daily activities, wherever they go. He is okay with another small dog in the home who has similar energy and age. He sleeps in his bed in the bedroom at night, although he would probably love sleeping in bed with his new family. These are the requirements for Chico’s new home: 1. Someone who is home most of the day and will include Chico with them throughout the day. 2. An adults only home or a home with children over the age of ten who have demonstrated that they know how to engage in a gentle, respectful way with small dogs. 3. A home with another small dog in the home, or in a home as an only dog. 4. A fenced yard would be great, because Chico loves exploring freely. If a fenced yard is not available, the family must be able to take him on a long walk every day – at least over one mile, and provide additional play time for him. 5. Never use a retractable leash – doing so will violate the adoption contract. 6. Live within 30 miles of Inver Grove Heights, MN. 7. Hopefully attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue annual reunion held in September of each year. Chico is neutered, has had a dental, is current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. His adoption fee is $320.00 plus $28.88 sales tax for a total fee of $348.88. To meet Chico, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southtown PetCo in Bloomington, MN.

Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! If you have been searching for a tiny little boy to add to your family, Jasper may just be the boy for you! He is almost 8 years old, but most people think he is still a puppy! He is only 4.4 pounds and just a darling little sprite! He is calm, gentle, sweet and loves to just sit next to you or on top of you. Due to his small stature any large animal is terrifying to him. Jasper does fine with another smaller Shih Tzu, but does not want to interact initially. After 2 weeks in his foster home, he is just now warming up to the idea of lying near or next to another dog. Jasper had previously been used for breeding and is now learning - and enjoying - how to just be a pet, including walking on a leash outside. He loves to walk a little way and then stops to look around, and then starts up again. He can’t go too far before running out of steam, but he does like his short walks and loves being in the yard with his foster mom. He is a very curious fellow and can scamper at top speed when in the mood. But he also runs if he hears a loud noise, and could quickly get away. He will always need to be in a harness and on a leash with you. If he is kept on a strict potty schedule (every 3-4 hours), Jasper does just fine in the house. He does sleep all through the night very well, but is an early morning riser! Jasper has not learned to play with toys, so right now his favorite extracurricular activity is just being with you, held by you, and resting by you. In other words, YOU are his world! When you arrive home and come in the door he is so happy and will jump and bounce around to greet you! Jasper is scheduled for dental surgery on May 22nd and will be ready for adoption around June 1st. The dental surgery is unfortunately the result of breeding this Shih Tzu down to such a tiny size. All of the teeth a dog is supposed to have just do not fit in a mouth his size. Due to the overcrowding of teeth, his mouth has become diseased and infected and all of his teeth must be removed. HERE IS WHAT THE FOSTER HOME IS LOOKING FOR IN HIS NEW HOME: · An adults only home with very little activity, noise or commotion to scare or feel threatening to him. He responds best to a soft, quiet voice. · Someone home most of the time. If you are gone for an activity or work, you need to be able to come home within 3-4 hours. He does experience a bit of separation anxiety when left all alone and he will need to relieve himself every 3 to 4 hours. · Keep treats at a minimum, but feed his specific diet in 3 small meals a day to help him gain a little weight. · Live with 40 miles of Bloomington, MN so a personal home visit and a follow up visit can be easily done. · Commit to come to our Rescue Reunion held in September each year. Jasper is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. His adoption fee is $320.00 plus $28.88 sales tax for a total of $348.88. Story
Hi everyone,  my name is Bella Boo. I am an 8-year-old Shih Tzu.  I came from a breeder release in Arkansas.  After many years of raising puppies,  I finally get the chance to see what being a "real" dog life is like. I was so scared when I first got to my foster mom's house. I have since started to get close enough for her to pet me and pick me up so I can sit on her lap. I still have a long way to go. This brings me to potty training.  I am going, but I am in need of help to get outside, but sometimes I will run. I'm sure with gaining more confidence, I will figure it out. I don't mind cats or other dogs, actually, being with another dog might be helpful in helping me gain more confidence. I walk on a leash perfectly.  I don't react to rabbits or squirrels. I sleep on the floor on blankets. When it is time for our bedtime treat, my sisters and I kind of do a tap dance while waiting to be given our treat. I know that there is a lot of work to do with me, but I am ready. I am ready to find my furever home!   Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Story
My name is Mercedes, and I am an 8 year old Shih Tzu rescued from a breeder in Arkansas. My foster mom calls me "Sadie". I know that I am overweight,  but I don't mind. I love food and will even help others finish theirs! If I knew how to walk on a leash, I could probably lose some of my excess weight.  I don't mind the cats that live at our house. I was very nervous and scared of everything, but now I am learning to trust and will come over to my foster mom to get some loving. I love going outside, but I need help with the stairs. I enjoy playing with dogs of my same size. Tap dancing with my foster sisters is what we do for our bedtime treat. So, a family with another small dog, patient humans, and love in your heart is what I am looking for in my forever family!  Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue.
