Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Story
Sadie is 5 years old and weighs 11 lbs. She is white and red in color. Sadie is up to date on vaccines and is spayed and just recently had a dental and just finished all her meds.   She has been dealing with alopecia, but it is under control and now has no hair loss.  You will need to continue giving her Omega 3 and a healthy diet.  If there’s a reoccurrence of hair loss she may need to see a vet dermatologist. Sadie is a sweet little girl.  She’s very loving and scared at the same time as she came from a mill.  She snuggles up to her foster at bed time and needs to be close. She gets along with her pups and isn’t aggressive at all.   Her personality is just now coming out, she gets so excited when she sees her foster  and when it’s time to eat and at snack time.   When she wags her tail her whole bottom wiggles, so cute.     She will follow you around when outside and keep a close eye on you.  Sadie isn’t fully house trained, she loves to mark, but since her spay, it has reduced.  In the house we still use doggy diapers.  She’s still learning the word NO.  More training will be required, along with leash training.   She loves to be called a good girl. She gobbles her food, and tends to throw it up afterwards, so until she slows down on her own, she will need a Slow-Feed Dog Bowl.   The perfect home for Sadie;      Someone who will enjoy her as much as she will enjoy you.  Preferably someone who is home a lot.  No small children but older is fine.   An established dog in home to help teach her how to continue to be a dog.  She watches her fosters dogs and catches on fast, but she is still adjusting to a home and humans.    A calm home is best.  She loves to sleep in bed, a crate is not recommended     Sadie will feel more comfortable sleeping in your bed.  She doesn’t like to be alone.  We have enjoyed and love fostering her.     If you think Sadie might be the perfect fit for you, please apply!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 1, 2024, 5:42 pm

Story
In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading the information you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Oreo is a white and black female born in October, 2024 and is all puppy! She weighs 13 pounds and is ready to play! She was surrendered to our rescue by an animal shelter in northern Minnesota who couldn’t take her in due to overcrowding. Her previous owners were an older couple who couldn’t manage caring for a very energetic puppy. It is imperative that she be adopted by a family who understands and is be able to provide the needs and activity level of a puppy. Oreo loves to play fetch and will retrieve toys (or anything else that is thrown) that she thinks looks like fun. She often has a toy in her mouth and is happily squeaking it just to hear the noise. She will run around the house with her foster sibling with a toy in her mouth that she’s, you guessed it – squeaking! She is starting to go to the door to let her foster parents know she wants out, but will need some training and a regular schedule to master going outside to relieve herself. She is very friendly with people and dogs but can be a little overzealous when excited and will need some redirection to assist her to calm down. She is eager to please, would love a new family that would spoil her with plenty of toys and will do well with some training and consistent parenting. When she came to her foster parents’ house she wasn’t real comfortable with being held and petted but recently has decided being petted and belly rubs are wonderful things. The following are requirements for Oreo’s adoption: 1. Oreo is a puppy, and because she can live 16+ years, applications will only be considered from age appropriate individuals who will be able to provide a home for her entire life. 2. A fenced in yard is a must as she has a lot of energy. It would be ideal if her family will include her in their daily activities and regular routine and will take her on at least a couple walks a day. She also needs to have lots of interactive play time. 3. Puppies require lots of attention, so it would be best if her new family is home much of the day to interact with her provide physical and mental stimulation. 4. A family must be willing to continue her house training and basic training. It is strongly recommended that her new family enroll in a puppy training class with Oreo so that she can learn good manners and to enable her to become the best family member possible. 5. A family with children over the age of ten, who understand how to be gentle and respectful of small dogs, will be considered. 6. Live within 30 minutes of Fridley, MN. 7. Agree to attend the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September each year. Oreo is current on vaccinations, microchipped, and is on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. She is scheduled to be spayed on July 8th and will be ready to go to her new home after recovery. Oreo’s adoption fee is $520.00 plus $46.93 in sales tax, totaling $566.93. To meet Oreo, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see Oreo and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 a.m. to noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southdale Petco in Bloomington, Minnesota. Oreo is ready for a new permanent family that will provide her with the love, cuddles and playtime she deserves.

Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Zeus and April are a father and daughter bonded pair that must be adopted together. Zeus, the father, is an 11-year-old Shih Tzu who weighs a little over 20 pounds. April, the daughter, is 10 years old and is a beautiful mix that includes Papillion and Bichon, along with Shih Tzu. She is very tiny at 9 pounds. Zeus and April lived their entire lives together along with one other dog in a home where they were loved and cared for. But circumstances changed and the owner was no longer able to take care of them, so they were surrendered to our rescue. Zeus and April are very bonded and are often found lying next to each other in their dog beds. April finds comfort and confidence in having Zeus around, and she is very timid when first meeting someone. Zeus is a beautiful larger Shih Tzu, and he thumps around with his large paws. He is very mellow and is happy to just hang around or go for a walk. He gets bursts of energy where he flies around his foster mom’s fenced in yard. Sometimes April will join in to chase each other. April is initially shy but warms up after a short period of time. She especially loves to cuddle at night when she is in bed with her foster mom, laying on or very close to her. As April gets to know and trust her foster mom more and more, she wants to be held and get belly tickles. These two are very well house-trained and like a small, healthy treat each time they come in from outside. They eat well with a morning and evening meal. They are just very easy. They are NOT afraid of thunderstorms or fireworks, which is really nice this time of year. They both ride well in a car, too. Neither seems too interested in toys but enjoy walks and being outside. They sleep in dog beds in the bedroom or in their foster mom's bed. The ideal home will be one where they will be the center of attention with lots of time available to spend with the pair just hanging out at home. A fenced in the yard would be a bonus so the pair can enjoy some sprinting. Ideally, they will be the only dogs in the household to keep the focus on them even though they get along well with other dogs including their two foster siblings. They have not been observed with children, but because they have easy-going personalities they probably would be okay with older, respectful children. April will eventually come to you after she becomes familiar and comfortable you. But she is fearful of someone just reaching for her or pursuing her to try to hold her. These are the requirements for Zeus’ and April’s new family: 1. Must be home much of the time and make Zeus and April the center of their family. They enjoy riding in the car, so a family who will include them in their daily lives and take them with them whenever possible would be great. 2. A fenced, secure yard would be ideal because they enjoy playing with each other in the yard. 3. Zeus requires daily eye washing and eye lubricating drops, so his family must be willing and able to provide that every day. 4. A family with children over the age of ten who know how to appropriately and gently interact with small dogs will be considered. 5. Must live within 100 miles of New Brighton, MN. 6. Agree to attend the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September each year. Both are neutered/spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Both have a dental scheduled for mid-July. Zeus requires daily eye washing and over the counter lubricating eye drops. He does not have dry eye, but gets mucus build-up, especially in his left eye that has a couple of small benign bumps on the eyelid. The total adoption fee for the pair is $379.72, which includes sales tax, and reflects a fee reduction of $100.00 for adopting a pair. To meet Zeus and April, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see them and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southtown PetCo in Bloomington, MN.

Bella is just about the sweetest little dog you can imagine! She was found as a stray in northern Minnesota and brought to our rescue through a humane society there. She is estimated to be approximately 5 years old. Bella is just a tiny little girl, weighing only 7 pounds. But don’t underestimate her strength and stamina. When she is not busy being your shadow or napping near you, Bella loves to go on walks and will let you know when she is good and ready to return. That said, this little black and white cutie is comfortable spending most of her time cozying up next to you and getting lots of ear scratches and belly rubs. Bella does not have much interest in squeaky toys or balls, but does have short bursts of energy for playing with you inside the home. She is also more comfortable and interested in people than other dogs and has done well with the respectful children of the foster family. She is not very vocal (only her dreams can bring out her soft yips and symphony of snores), but she communicates plenty via her serving looks. It’s usually to ask for a long walk outside and plenty of sniffing opportunities! The following are requirements for Bella adoption: · As Shih Tzus can live 16+ years, applications will only be accepted from age appropriate individuals who will be able to provide the care and attention Bella needs for the rest of her life. · An adults only home with a quiet, calm lifestyle would be best, although a family with children over the age of ten, who understand how to be gentle and mindful of small dogs, will be considered. · A family who is home most of the day and who will take her on frequent walks. · A family where she will be the only dog; she is not interested in other dogs and enjoys all the attention for herself. · Live within 30 minutes of Saint Paul, MN · Agree to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September of each year. Bella is current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. It is unknown if she has been spayed, but if she goes into heat, our rescue will pay for her spay performed by one of our veterinarians. Bella was also determined to have bilateral hip dysplasia with partial luxation of the left hip. Currently, she maintains normal mobility, but should she develop signs of discomfort or pain, surgery may be recommended in the future. It is important that she continues to maintain her current weight to reduce straining her hind legs. Bella’s adoption fee is $370.00 plus sales tax of $33.39 for a total of $403.39. To meet Bella, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see her and other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM the first Saturday of every month at the Southtown PetCo in Bloomington, MN.
