Story
Beau Geste was purchased as a puppy from a breeder in South Carolina, but was surrendered to a local rescue several years later because he was fearful and had a bite history. He was adopted out as an emotional support dog and, although loved, wasn’t cut out for the job and his behavior only escalated. Beau has come such a long way in his foster home. Once fearful of humans and displaying "nip and run" behavior, Beau is now curious and interested in meeting new people (unless you make too much eye contact, which he considers untrustworthy and shady). Beau gets along with dogs of all breeds and sizes.  Even as a senior, he gives the best play bows and enjoys an occasional romp around the yard or house. He is also good with dog-savvy cats. Beau has received extensive obedience training and behavior modification from his foster, who is a professional dog trainer.  It is believed that Beau's initial human aggression was a result of excessive physical (and possibly verbal) correction. An e-collar cannot be used under any circumstance, as it elicits an aggressive response.  Beau is a talker but can be easily redirected, so patience and a little humor are required. Beau would do best with only positive training methods and a Fear-Free Certified veterinarian and groomer. Beau is looking for a quiet home with not a lot of activity or frequent guests. He would do best in an adult-only home with an adopter who can read his cues.  He is a low-maintenance dog, content to lie in his bed across the room from you, and requires a consistent, predictable routine.  Beau's favorite things in life are butt scratches and cookies.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  If you are an approved adopter and are interested in this dog, please let your case worker know. Story
Maxfield was rescued from a high-kill shelter in Texas on a whim from an SSR volunteer. He was at risk of euthanasia so she brought him home instead. He spent two years living with his foster in Texas, and she treated him like one of her own dogs. Eventually she decided it was time for him to find his forever family and head north to Virginia.  Maxfield has shown signs of dog reactivity so he is currently with our training partner, Sadie's Rules, in Nellysford, VA. Max has had some unfortunate encounters with dogs in the past and has even been attacked previously. Poor Max was even bit while out on a leashed neighborhood walk with his foster in TX prior to coming to VA. A stray came upon them and she was unable to safely remove Max before that stray attacked. This old guy has suffered a lot of trauma in his TX life and we promised him a brighter future here up North! Are you the bright spot in his life? Max prefers to be the center of your world and would do better as the only dog in your home. He does not like when other dogs get in his personal space because of what he has experienced  (and who can blame him?) but he can coexist with other dogs. As a protective measure, when Max is out on the trail at training with numerous other dogs, he often wears a basket muzzle. He needs to know his new owner has his back and will protect him and not put him in dangerous situations. Max was already treated for heartworm disease and is negative. He is allergic to chicken and does really well on the raw diet he is on. His previous foster can share information regarding the holistic protocol and supplements she found successful in keeping him healthy. The finishing touches of his training program are wrapping up and Max is actively looking for his forever home! The  15/10 Foundation  has launched an initiative to encourage the adoptions of German Shepherds and German Shepherd mixes over the age of 5 years. Maxfield has been nominated and approved for adoption fee sponsorship. Story
Ashley has experienced more challenges than most dogs go through in their lifetime. She was very happily owned when her owner suddenly passed away. After his passing, Ashley spent a lot of time crated and became very fearful of the world. Luckily, her late owner’s will had an estate set aside for her and required her to be sent to a no-kill rescue.    Ashley was brought into SSR and put into foster care. She was slowly coming out of her shell when she spontaneously ruptured a disc in her back while running around in the yard, leaving her paralyzed in her backend. Ashley now had to be expressed daily, picked up to be moved around, and endure a lot of veterinary procedures. She eventually developed pressure sores on her hind legs that became infected. Along with being paralyzed, Ashley was facing amputation as well because of these sores that would not heal despite months of bandaging and wound care.    After almost a year of non-stop vet appointments and worsening conditions, SSR found a new vet to transfer Ashley too that would try new treatments. We were also able to find a new foster with most availability to care for a special needs dog and take her to her appointments and do her bandaging.    After less than a month of being under new care, Ashley began to heal and started thriving. Her pressure sores are healing and she will soon no longer require wound dressings! She also started a new physical therapy regime and her reflexes in her back legs are getting more prominent. We are even getting her a custom made wheelchair for her to run around in!    At one point, Ashley’s condition was so poor that euthanasia was being discussed. We are so happy to report that we found an unimaginable solution for her so she can enjoy the rest of her years! Ashley now spends her days running through fields in her wheelchair, attending sporting events, and going on walks in her stroller. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  If you are an approved adopter and are interested in this dog, please let your case worker know. Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Some of you may remember the story of Indy 2619 from a while ago. Indy was hit by a car down in the Texas heat and left on the side of the road with no use of her back end for four, yes FOUR days. A kind person took her food and water and she was taken to a backyard and left for some time again. FINALLY, she was taken to a local vet where SSR agreed to pay for her to at least have some pain meds. While being handled by a vet tech she tried defending herself and bit the tech. It was decided that she was to be put to sleep. Luckily SSR wouldn't let that happen and they decided that from that day on she would be an SSR doggo. She has been with the rescue since August 2022. It's been a long journey. She stayed at the vet for several days, being fed with a syringe through a muzzle that wasn't allowed to be removed because of her bite. She was taken into a temporary foster where she started to gain mobility back into her legs. She was sent north, to spend most of her time in boarding. She seems to have been at least partially feral, or so abused that she had absolutely no trust in humans. She's been with us since the middle of May and my dogs are teaching her how to be the best spoiled of herself she can be. She LOVES food/treats and will come running if she thinks she can beg some from you. She also LOVES other dogs and rely on them to show her that everything is going to be okay. Leashes were a major scare for her when she first got here and she would fight and chew through them. She absolutely loves walks now and hates being left behind. She is what I affectionately call my little cripple, and half demon/half gremlin as she is vocal when annoyed. Don't let the growls fool you though, I don't think she knows what a normal conversation sounds like. Despite her back end still giving her some trouble, she can go up stairs, run extremely fast, and has even started climbing up on the couch. I do use a ramp for her to get in the car and she even took a road trip down to Florida recently.  Indy is scheduled to get spayed on December 18th and will be looking for her forever home after that. I know that someone will see her posts and will fall in love one day. I imagine there will be tons of questions, and quite a few meet and greets before anyone takes her home, but I just know there is someone willing to take this little crippled half demon, half gremlin in and show her love. If you think it could be you, don't hesitate to reach out. If it's not you, that's okay, enjoy her journey. I know I sure have.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  If you are an approved adopter and are interested in this dog, please let your case worker know. Story
Peaches is amazing!  She is affectionate, loves to cuddle, and loves having her chest scratched between her arms. She enjoys stretching out for a good car ride. She loves to play with toys and will play by herself but would very much enjoy someone to play with her. She is a little bit of a couch potato when she needs to be but also enjoys walks and playing outside with her people. Peaches loves children of any age. She would be best around children that are out of the toddler stages as she could knock them over. She is spayed, house trained, and listens very well. She knows all the basic commands and is expanding on her training each day! Peaches is a larger GSD, she is tall and weighs around 85 pounds now, she was only 36 pounds when the rescue took her in. Peaches prefers to be the only animal in the house. If there are other dogs in the house older calm males she does better with, than females or very active young dogs. She does have a prey drive and will chase bunnies and squirrels if not corrected.  She does not get along with other dogs at first, she takes a long time to warm up to them. Her fosters are continuously working with her and she just completed her board and train program at Creature Comfort Inn Strasburg, VA. Peaches has climbed mountains with her training and would love someone to continue to work with her.  She has made great progress and has potential for so much more!  Be sure to check out some of her training videos below and on Creature Comfort Inn YouTube channel. Peaches has EPI short for Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency which just means her pancreas doesn't produce enough enzymes to break down the food properly. The enzyme powder that is added to her food at each meal costs roughly $39 per month.  Her B12 supplement is $8 per month and her food is around $60 dollars per month. So please don't let EPI scare you.  It is very basic and easy to manage.  Peaches is doing so well and is very healthy.  Won't you please apply to adopt me or request to meet me? I am located in Round Hill, VA.  Please review our adoption process,  www.shenandoahrescue.org/adoption-process  if interested.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  If you are an approved adopter and are interested in this dog, please let your case worker know.
