Story
I rescued Bella from a family that neglected her. She was so neglected I could see every bone in her body. I took her to the vet to have her evaluated. In time I was able to get her healthy. She is spayed, has all of her shots. She requires a lot of attention. I am unable to care for her due to loss of job. She is super sweet and could use some training on a leash and chewing prevention. I cannot afford to take her to dog training. She is crate trained.

Story
Maxfield was rescued from a high-kill shelter in Texas on a whim from an SSR volunteer. He was at risk of euthanasia so she brought him home instead. He spent two years living with his foster in Texas, and she treated him like one of her own dogs. Eventually she decided it was time for him to find his forever family and head north to Virginia.  Maxfield has shown signs of dog reactivity so he is currently with our training partner, Sadie's Rules, in Nellysford, VA. Max has had some unfortunate encounters with dogs in the past and has even been attacked previously. Poor Max was even bit while out on a leashed neighborhood walk with his foster in TX prior to coming to VA. A stray came upon them and she was unable to safely remove Max before that stray attacked. This old guy has suffered a lot of trauma in his TX life and we promised him a brighter future here up North! Are you the bright spot in his life? Max prefers to be the center of your world and would do better as the only dog in your home. He does not like when other dogs get in his personal space because of what he has experienced  (and who can blame him?) but he can coexist with other dogs. As a protective measure, when Max is out on the trail at training with numerous other dogs, he often wears a basket muzzle. He needs to know his new owner has his back and will protect him and not put him in dangerous situations. Max was already treated for heartworm disease and is negative. He is allergic to chicken and does really well on the raw diet he is on. His previous foster can share information regarding the holistic protocol and supplements she found successful in keeping him healthy. The finishing touches of his training program are wrapping up and Max is actively looking for his forever home! The  15/10 Foundation  has launched an initiative to encourage the adoptions of German Shepherds and German Shepherd mixes over the age of 5 years. Maxfield has been nominated and approved for adoption fee sponsorship. Story
Peaches was adopted and had a life as a family member, but sadly was returned after 6 years. We are all sad for her and hoping her forever home will love her for the good girl she can be. Sweet Peaches is affectionate, loves to chill on the couch, enjoys a good car ride, a long walk, and playing with her toys. Peaches adores all sized people, although the littles may not stay upright around 'miss big love'. She is spayed, housebroken, and knows all the basic commands. This girl listens well, she completed her training at Creature Comfort Inn and is currently being fostered by a trainer. She is a strong girl that will need a strong leader, continued structure will be best to keep everyone happiest. Peaches is a beautiful tall German Shepherd, weighting 85 pounds. She prefers to be the only animal in the house and does have a strong prey drive, so small critters wouldn't fair well around this queen. Peaches has EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency), which means her pancreas doesn't produce enough enzymes to break down the food properly. This is not too costly and easy to manage. Enzyme powder is added to her food at each meal and she needs a B12 supplement. So please don't let EPI scare you! Peaches is a healthy senior girl, looking for her happily-ever-after! Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  If you are an approved adopter and are interested in this dog, please let your case worker know. Story
Hank is doing well with his mild case of Mega-E (megaesophagus). He gets in his Bailey Chair himself at mealtime. Hank loves to play, learning to catch a frisbee. He will be great at it, jumping very high in the air and succeeding in a catch! He likes to fetch balls and usually brings them back. He will need additional training in leash walking. Hank is housebroken, heartworm negative, neutered, and tolerates his crate. It is important to keep him in a safe area when you are not around, so he doesn't get into something he should not. He should mature to a medium sized good boy, under forty pounds. Handsome Hank is good with kids, cats, and dogs. Definitely need to keep kitty items out Hank's reach, as he finds everything tasty. This good boy is a real catch!   Hank and his 11 siblings were named after legendary country singers. This is their story: His mother, Mountain Mama, wandered up to a feral horse rescue campsite and quickly befriended the rescuers. She needed help! Soon after, she gave birth to a large litter of puppies. A few weeks later a wonderful thing happened - Mama and her 12 puppies were transferred to an SSR foster.  All of Hank's siblings have been adopted.  Hank has been diagnosed with megaesophagus or mega e. This diagnosis should not keep you from adopting this very sweet boy.  All that needs to be done is to have him sit up when he eats and for 10 minutes after. He is a champ at taking his pill at every meal, by syringe after they have been dissolved in water. An elevated water bowl works best for this pup. Hank is a very happy, playful, outgoing puppy.  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  If you are an approved adopter and are interested in this dog, please let your case worker know. Story
Theo (previously SSR Rainier) was surrendered due to no fault of his own. How can you resist this guy?!  He is a brilliant boy and so beautiful! Theo is about a year old and very active.  He is obsessed with his ball, frisbee, doggy pool and garden hose.  He is dog friendly, crate trained, potty trained and has graduated puppy training!  He has never shown any destructive behavior and has great recall.  Theo would be a great hiking or running buddy. Theo may need surgery to correct a problem with 'urine dribble'.  He has been to the vet and a UTI has been ruled out.  We will explore further to find out what the issue may be. SSR will pay all expenses to correct this medical issue.  Theo is up to date on vaccinations, he is neutered and heartworm negative.  Please complete an application if you are interested in fostering or adopting this handsome boy! He is waiting for his fun forever family!  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  If you are an approved adopter and are interested in this dog, please let your case worker know. Story
Jack was rescued from south Texas and adopted in April 2020. He was later returned to SSR when the original adopter rehomed him to a family unfamiliar with the German Shepherd breed, not understanding his needs. Jack has been a wonderful and happy healthy boy! He loves all humans, big and small. Jack is a low energy boy that walks well on the leash. He's a silly, playful, obedient good guy that has good recall and isn't destructive. This affectionate fella is up to date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, neutered, and housebroken. Such a big one hundred pound snuggle buddy! He can coexist with other dogs, but he is picky about who he lets in his inner circle. So slow introductions with resident dog(s) will need to happen before Jack can be adopted. Cats are a nope. After all, we want to make sure his next home is his forever home! If you have room in your home and heart to give this big guy the love he deserves, please apply today to adopt him.  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  If you are an approved adopter and are interested in this dog, please let your case worker know.
