Story
Nola is a super sweet and affectionate girl. She is slowly learning the world is not always a scary place but is still very nervous. She gets worried and tries to duck away when she hears loud noises. She warms up to people quickly with a proper introduction. Otherwise, she tends to be nervous of new people. Once you've earned her trust, she likes to show her affection - she will climb up onto if not corrected, and will jump into your lap and give you kisses. She is not really interested in other dogs and tries to keep her distance while on walks. She gets easily overwhelmed by energetic dogs, larger dogs, and groups of dogs. When introduced to another dog she is selective, so slow and careful introductions are a must. She will do best with an experienced owner who can help her build her confidence and allow her time to move at her own pace when it comes to making new human and dog friends. Her foster had the following to say (11/2023): "Her favorite things at the moment are her stuffed duck toy and chicken. You'll often find Nola on the floor of our living room rolling on her back while squeaking her duck. Nola has bonded strongly with myself and is continuing to warm up to the rest of the family. She would do better in a house with someone who works from home or is home most of the time. She prefers to be with her people but can be left alone. She is house trained. She will not ask to go out but will wait until she is let out. She likes to chase the squirrels in our backyard, given this we are not sure if she would do well in a home with cats."

Story
Oakley is an irresistible 28-pound mini cattle dog, who's full of super contagious happy energy, and greets everyone with smiles and kisses. He's eager to please, is dog and people friendly, and loves both wrestling and snuggling. And when he runs it's a thing of beauty -- he flies through the air like Superman! He's currently living with 3 other dogs of various sizes and learning new things. He's super smart, and has already mastered come, stay, sit and off. Oakley is also doing great with leash training, and is happy to sit at corners and wait for your cue to cross the street. And as a bonus he's fully house trained! As is common with heelers, Oakley nips and tugs when he plays. He's also exhibited herding tendencies, so he'd probably do best in an adult home or one with older teens. This petite boy would love an active family to take him on adventures and provide him with further socialization and training!

Banjo is charming, and needs to be in a rural environment with very little traffic coming and going from his home. He is very smart but he is adamant about taking hoses, But it is a lot of fun to use the hose near him unless you're trying to get something done).....he loves to leap up and bite the water. Hilarious and adorable. He will need an adult-only home who have had plenty experience with this breed. He needs more work on training and socialization. Banjo is a sweetheart he loves to go for walks, just short ones. He isn't very big into hiking and mostly just enjoys the company of his humans.

Cowboy is a hardcore dude - full of himself - better off leash in the country - or on leash - he is not great with other dogs, is selective and needs space - he is smart, reactive, quick, agile, attentive and affectionate to his humans..... very active, bossy.... not an urban or suburban dog. He is a working type, big stamina, big demands, ready to go all day!

This is Chloe, a young and energetic girl who can’t wait to meet you. She is very outgoing and will be the life of the party. She loves walking, and would probably love running or hiking, too. An active family would be ideal for her. Chloe plays well with other dogs and is a playgroup superstar at the shelter. She is able to adjust her play style to just about any other dog. She also likes to chase balls. She might be interested in agility training, and already knows some basic commands. Chloe seems very smart and alert. She will be loads of fun to take home.

Think you and Tulip might be a match, but you want to do a trial run at home first? You can foster Tulip-meaning you'll take them home for one week with the intention of adopting them at the end of their stay. If things don't work out, you can always bring them back to us. If you're interested, come see us or contact us at adoptions@sfspca.org to learn more. Are you looking for fresh flowers? Look no further than the underbite queen herself - Tulip! Tulip recently went out on a little staycation with a volunteer to learn more about her habits in a home setting. We are pleased to share that fabulous Miss Tulip did fantastic in her home! Tulip may take time to bloom, her Foster reported 4 days to feel comfy, but once she does, she is a lover (especially with face kisses, and full body cuddles) and while sensitive to loud noises was very food motivated and able to be lured away! Look at her go!Tulip also got to try her hand at loose leash walking (that's fancy speak for not pulling) and her Foster reported great improvement: "by the end of the week, especially the last few days, all of their walks were with a calm loose leash and of course lots of sniffing and exploring."She was said to be a patient co-pilot and although she wasn't the most avid adventurer she was learning. Her exploration of the loud city also got bolder and with slow introductions, lots of treats and taking it at quieter times she was improving in only her short vacation from the shelter. She was also learning to pass other dogs on the street but would still prefer to be the only dog in the home!

Meet Billie and Harper, two sister pups who wandered into our shelter scared and overwhelmed. After a week working with our volunteers, they’ve been reminded that the world is a fun and exciting place to experience, and are embracing expanding their comfort zones and growing into confident young ladies. Billie and Harper love people, other dogs, and love to watch the world go by, but their adopters have to remember that they are also sensitive, tender souls who will need patience, encouragement, and lots of scrumptious treats to reward them for their bravery! We highly recommend having experience with working dog breeds like cattle dogs and border collies, as these busy, brainy girls will need to be occupied! Come meet Billie and Harper today! Story
Meet Jingles! He is a special guy whose tail jingles a mile a minute. He is a happy fella that may have been born with or experienced some previous trauma that has led to what we think are neurological and brain function, and mild depth perception issues. He's a busy boy with a lot of motion and circling. He likes toys, loves treats!! This doesn't seem to inhibit him from loving life, and wanting to have fun! He will need to find a family that not only has experience, but are also willing to take on the quirks that make him so special. He will need to meet everyone in the family prior to adoption, and we recommend no kids, teenagers are fine. Any dogs he is to live with need to be tolerant and non reactive. Positive reinforcement training is recommended to help teach him manners, he grabs at food so some caution is needed when giving treats.

Pongo is a real ball of energy, with enough enthusiasm to keep you going all day long. He's always eager to learn new tricks and commands, and with the right training, he's sure to be the top dog in no time. However, it's worth noting that Pongo may need some extra guidance when it comes to being around kids. He's still learning the ropes, but with patience and lots of treats, he'll be the perfect family pet in no time.

Story
LOCATION: SANCTUARY IN WILLITS, CA. Shiro likes to play with toys, and is very smart. He is a moderately high drive dog like most herding breeds and likes activity on his terms. He likes his walks but his insecurities keep him from being a dog park dog. He bonds heavily with a particular person and sometimes a particular dog - he is IN LOVE with the dog SNOW KITTY at the Milo Sanctuary, and would follow him anywhere. Shiro is wary of strangers but is very loyal to his people and for this reason he can be protective. He needs a very predictable, low stim. home to be successful. Training and building Shiro's confidence would be key to have Shiro flourish. *Previous Notes* 5/20/17 "Shiro is a super mellow dog. He just loves to sleep all day when we are at work. He does not bark or chew anything up. He is potty and house trained and never has had an accident inside the house. He is so furry and soft and has stunningly beautiful blue eyes. Shiro loves to run around and play fetch and catch Frisbee when he is not cuddling next to you. He loves the outdoors but is not a super energetic dog. He will just sleep all day or go for a walk with you. He loves squeaky toys and will just collect them from around the house if you hide them. He is intelligent and treat motivated. He was able to learn how to sit and was learning how to stay in just a few training sessions. *Shiro has probably had a rough past. When the vet examined him, we found a pellet in his x-rays. It is probably from being shot. He bonds very well with women and is more skittish with males. He also tends to get scared of men and tries to guard his female guardian sometimes. He does not like strangers coming up to him and gets protective of his owners. He would do well with experienced owners. We are not sure how he does with kids - Milo suggests a home without children for a myriad of reasons due to his stranger danger. He is insecure and can react poorly when meeting new dogs, but usually settles in and is fine - but can take some work with him and a new dog to get past the initial snapping and jitters, running with his tail tucked. *He needs lots of love, affection, and discipline, which we were unable to provide with our busy lives." *Shiro is not a first time dog, nor a city dog. He has fairly severe stranger danger and a bite record, he has fear based aggression to dogs and people. He needs a predictable environment, and a buddy dog. Interested please email an application to sanctuary@milofoundation.org Thank you for considering adoption of a Milo Foundation Sanctuary dog. Our Sanctuary is where our rescued dogs who have had difficulty in a home in the past, have behavioral issues, or too much energy, or for some, aggression issues with other dogs, or intense stranger danger that make them more difficult to safely and happily live in urban environments. These are not beginner dogs or for the most part nor are they for families with children. IF you are looking for an easy dog to add to your family, we suggest looking at the dogs at our Adoption Center, Milo Pt Richmond. BUT, if you can offer a safe and nurturing home to a dog with some behavioral "quirks" please do send an application today. Thank you.
