Story
To fully understand Romeo, it’s important to know where he began, and how far he’s come. His bio consists of three parts that outline his background, characteristics as we’ve gotten to know him, and his best suited home, providing a full picture to any potential family.Romeo’s Story:We first met Romeo when Animal Control responded to an emaciated dog report. What we encountered upon arrival at the vet’s office was one of the worst starvation cases our team had witnessed. Romeo was little more than skin and bones, yet he gave slow tail wags of appreciation to anyone who spent time with him. Once Romeo was healthy enough to leave hospitalization, the long road of extensive rehabilitation began – involving medical treatment, behavioral training, and emotional healing. As Romeo’s recovery progressed, we recognized that his past included little to no training; he had to learn nearly every life skill from the beginning. Romeo is a rare, special dog who’s helped teach us just as much as we’ve taught him.Romeo’s Personality:Romeo’s resilience shines through as one of his strongest qualities. He recovered from his experience and bonds deeply with the people he trusts, sharing his true self with us. He’s equal parts goofy, sweet, loyal, and playful; a big personality in a big body. He loves carrying around and showing people his babies (stuffed animals), also using them for support when overstimulated. When indoors, Romeo’s a content, low energy couch potato. When outdoors, he activates his athlete mode, ready to go all the time. Exploring is a favorite hobby, especially when it involves water time, and he’s usually the first to investigate something new (but he appreciates when he can process before jumping into a new experience). Romeo thrives with calm, confident leadership and looks to his person for direction. He catches on quickly to having a task, structure, consistency, and routine. We’re continuing to work with Romeo on impulse control and emotional regulation, two skills which have been challenges for him. Thankfully he enjoys learning and thrives when expectations are made clear. His food motivation greatly assists these training sessions, too.Romeo’s Ideal Home:And now, on to the best part – finding Romeo’s best fit person to continue his journey! His home setting will be very specific to set him up for long-term success. An experienced owner is best suited for Romeo; someone prepared to provide clear expectations, positive reinforcement training, daily mental enrichment, and close observation. It’s important Romeo finds a trusted guide who can read the room and remind him to slow down and think before reacting, particularly during rough play where he’s prone to overstimulation.Romeo’s ideal home is adults only (no kids for him) where he could thrive as an only pet. A fenced yard is a super bonus! Although he’s been around dogs in the past, those experiences were likely without healthy boundaries so he may lack appropriate dog-to-dog social skills. Cats are unknown, but we’d suggest a cat-free environment for this boy.Above all, Romeo needs someone both fun and consistent. A trusted caretaker willing and able to provide him the safe space he deserves, with all the happiness and personalized care that he missed out on in early life. Someone who appreciates Romeo, understands him right where he’s at, and guides him through his successful future.

Story
We adopted James about 3.5 years ago, we think he's almost 7. When he was rescued his leg was broken and they amputated it but it definitely doesn't slow him down. He loves playing fetch and learning tricks for treats. His behavior indicates a rough life but he's quick to learn and has improved significantly. He would probably thrive in a single dog home with someone who has experience with dogs. He does not like cats or small children. We recently became pregnant and it's not going well for him. We love him so much and hope we can find someone he deserves.

Story
Meet Nero! If you're looking for a loyal companion whose favorite place in the world is right beside you, Nero may be your perfect match. Nero is a sweet, gentle senior dog with a soft heart and an even softer personality. He isn't interested in chaos, adventure, or being the center of attention. What Nero wants most is a quiet home, a cozy place to nap, and someone to love. He is the definition of a Velcro dog. Once he bonds with you, he wants nothing more than to be nearby, whether that's curled up on the couch, sunbathing in the yard, or quietly following you from room to room. Nero's Story Nero came to rescue after his owner surrendered him when new puppies were brought into the home. While change can be difficult for any dog, it can be especially hard for a senior who has spent years knowing one life and one family. Despite this transition, Nero has continued to show just how loving and resilient he is. Now he is looking for a family that will give him the stability, comfort, and love he deserves for the rest of his life. Nero's Favorite Activities Cuddling with his people Napping in a cozy bed Sunbathing Being carried and doted on Quiet time at home Relaxing beside his favorite person Following his humans around the house Enjoying a peaceful, predictable routine Nero is not a high-energy dog. He is happiest when life is calm, quiet, and full of love. What Nero Is Working On Nero has adjusted well to foster care and is doing well with both house-training and crate training. Because he can be nervous in new situations, his foster family continues to help him build confidence and feel secure. One important thing to know about Nero is that when he becomes frightened, his instinct is to run. Because of this, he should always be on a leash or in a secure, fenced area when outdoors. His foster shares: "He can be very nervous and if scared he will run. I recommend if he's outside, he's always on a leash." Nero also prefers quieter environments and may bark initially when meeting new people or encountering unfamiliar situations, but he warms up quickly once he realizes he is safe. Nero's Ideal Home Nero would thrive in: A calm, quiet household Adults or families with older, respectful children Someone looking for a devoted companion A home with a predictable routine People who enjoy relaxing at home Nero does well with cats and would be happiest with other calm dogs who enjoy peacefully coexisting rather than roughhousing and constant play. He likes children but is not particularly interested in playing with them and would do best in a home without very young children. Why You'll Love Nero There is something incredibly special about senior dogs. They don't need much. They don't ask for much. What they offer instead is quiet companionship, unconditional love, and gratitude that is hard to describe. Nero is gentle, affectionate, and happiest when he's close to the people he loves. He may take a little time to settle into a new environment, but once he does, you'll gain a loyal shadow who wants nothing more than to spend his days by your side. If you're looking for a sweet, calm companion to share your couch, your heart, and your life, Nero is waiting to meet you. Apply to adopt Nero today! Apply to adopt at tailsofhopewi.org Nero is currently fostered in Spring Grove, MN. Please note donations using the SPONSOR ME tab on PetFinder will not go to Tails of Hope-WI.

While large crowds can still make her nervous, she continues to gain confidence through positive experiences and patient guidance. One of the most rewarding parts of Kira's journey has been watching her learn how to simply be a dog. She now enjoys playing with the resident dogs, has found her voice, and has embraced life as a cherished family companion. While she'll occasionally speak up when she has something to say, she's not an overly vocal dog. Kira enjoys outings, especially when they aren't overly crowded, and thrives in environments where she can move at her own pace. A Few Things to Know: -Adult dog -Little to no accidents on a routine and schedule -Crate trained -Loves other dogs -Coexists well with cats -Loves children and is very gentle with small children -May jump when excited -Can counter surf if given the opportunity -May be nervous in new places initially -Continues to build confidence every day Great Activities for Kira: -Quiet neighborhood walks -Coffee shop patios -One-on-one bonding days --Relaxing at home -Indoor enrichment activities -Low-stimulation outings -Sunbathing sessions Best Match: -Patient adopters -Family-friendly homes -Homes with other friendly dogs -People who appreciate a calmer companion -Families looking for a loving dog who enjoys both adventures and downtime Three Words That Describe Kira Best: ❤️ Chill ❤️ Playful ❤️ Smart Foster Location: Eau Claire, WI Kira was found abandoned on the streets of Texas and has come an incredibly long way since those uncertain days. Story
Meet Gunner! If you're looking for a dog who lives life at full speed, loves everyone he meets, and is always ready for the next adventure, Gunner is your guy! Gunner is a happy-go-lucky puppy with a larger-than-life personality. He's affectionate, goofy, outgoing, and absolutely convinced that every person and every dog he meets is a potential new best friend. His enthusiasm for life is contagious, and wherever he goes, fun is sure to follow. His foster describes him perfectly: "Very energetic, very loving, and a personality that is so outgoing." Gunner is still very much a puppy, which means he's curious about everything, eager to learn, and always looking for something exciting to do. He's incredibly people-oriented and thrives on attention, affection, and being included in family activities. Gunner's Story Gunner's journey began in Oklahoma, where he and his littermates were surrendered to a rescue before making their way to Wisconsin in search of loving homes. While we don't know much about his life before rescue, one thing is certain: Gunner is making up for lost time by living every day to the fullest. He approaches the world with confidence, curiosity, and a heart full of love. Gunner's Favorite Activities Running and playing outside Walks and neighborhood adventures Car rides Fetch Tug-of-war Playing with other dogs Playing with toys Chewing on bones and enrichment chews Sniffing and exploring new places Meeting new people Outdoor patios and social outings Sunbathing Zooming around the yard Cuddling after a busy day Napping when he's finally worn himself out Gunner absolutely loves other dogs and would likely thrive in a home with an active canine playmate who enjoys rough-and-tumble puppy games. What Gunner Is Working On Like any growing puppy, Gunner is still learning the rules of being a well-mannered family member. His foster family is currently helping him work on: Leash manners Keeping all four paws on the floor when excited Greeting people politely Crate training Building confidence when alone Avoiding counter surfing Learning that not every person or dog needs to be greeted Gunner can be a little stubborn at times, but he is also smart, food motivated, and eager to learn. Consistent training and structure will help him continue to grow into an amazing adult dog. Because he is still a puppy, he occasionally shows some crate anxiety and separation anxiety tendencies. His foster family is working hard to create positive experiences and help him learn that being alone is safe. Gunner's Ideal Home Gunner would thrive in: An active family A home that enjoys outdoor adventures A family committed to ongoing training A home with another playful dog A family that can provide plenty of exercise and enrichment He loves children but can get excited during play and may accidentally knock over smaller kids. Families with young children should be prepared for normal puppy exuberance. Gunner currently plays a little too rough with cats and would likely do best in a home with dog-savvy cats or no cats at all. Gunner is altered. Why You'll Love Gunner Gunner is the kind of dog who makes every day more fun. He greets life with excitement, loves with his whole heart, and never misses an opportunity to make people smile. Whether he's racing around the yard, cuddling on the couch after a busy day, or enthusiastically introducing himself to everyone he meets, Gunner brings joy wherever he goes. He's energetic, loving, playful, and full of potential. All he needs now is a family willing to guide him through puppyhood and give him the love he's been waiting for. If you're ready for adventures, laughter, and a best friend who will adore you endlessly, Gunner is ready to meet you. • Located in: Iola, WI. His foster is willing to meet within an hour of her home. To apply to adopt, visit tailsofhopewi.org. Donations made through the SPONSOR ME tab on PetFinder do not support Tails of Hope-WI.
