Meet Billy! Sweet Billy has had a rough time of it. He was seen wandering alone for some time and was finally trapped and transferred into our care. He was severely matted and underweight and on top of it all we found a bullet in one of his front paws. Billy had surgery to remove the bullet, and was shaved under sedation too. He is feeling much better now. Clearly Billy has not had a great start in life. He is a sweet boy despite all of that but is still learning a lot. He is getting more confident on a leash, which is a new skill for him. He likes other dogs just fine and lives in a foster home with other dogs. Sometimes he needs a little help with the social graces but all of this is fairly easily managed.  Billy loves people and would like to be near them all the time. He can struggle with being left alone and does not enjoy being crated. This needs some work.  His coat is growing back nicely and his pretty curls are coming back. He's such a good boy and he deserves a life full of love after having had such a rough beginning.  Billy is vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. The adoption fee is a donation to the mission and goes far beyond getting a fully vetted pet.    The rescue’s hard costs alone (excluding transport) for a healthy dog to go through our program typically range between $412 to $859, which includes boarding, food, medications, vaccines, and spay/neuter. For heartworm-positive dogs, hard costs are upwards of $1,368. Additionally, dogs requiring extended boarding, extra training, or extra medical care—such as dental work, vision care, or orthopedic care—can lead to expenses running into the thousands. Also, included in the adoption fee are costs to cover transport up to the Pacific Northwest or East Coast. Transport is a significant additional expense to the rescue.  While adoption fees help cover part of these expenses, we want to emphasize that the rescue does not receive government funding and must fundraise to offset the remaining expense balance which ranges $100-1,000++ per animal on these direct costs.   It doesn’t stop there!
