You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you for stopping by to see me!  Please fill out an application to set up  a private meeting.  I f you’re looking for a gentle, devoted companion, Coco may be the perfect match. This adorable Shih Tzu/Dachshund mix is as sweet as they come and has a quiet, loving nature that makes her easy to adore. One of the cutest things about Coco is the way she walks—she has a little bunny-hop style that is guaranteed to make you smile. Coco is happiest simply being near her people. She loves companionship, whether it’s from humans or other dogs, and is content to quietly follow you from room to room throughout the day. She enjoys cuddling, relaxing nearby, and keeping an eye on her favorite people. While she can be a little shy when first meeting new people, it doesn’t take long for her to realize she’s safe. Once she does, she becomes incredibly trusting and affectionate. Coco gets along wonderfully with all dog-friendly dogs and would enjoy having a canine companion. However, she does not require another dog as long as her people are home frequently and able to provide the companionship she loves. This sweet girl enjoys soft treats, cozy places to nap, and having a comfortable spot where she can watch for her people. Her favorite setup is her kennel with the door left open or a soft blanket-filled box near the doorway where she can keep an eye on everything while waiting for her family to return. As part of her daily routine, coco receives eye drops in the vending and 1/2 tablet of Benadryl twice a day with a little canned food. She’s very cooperative and does well with this. Coco isn’t looking for excitement or adventure—she’s looking for love. She would thrive in a home where she can be included in daily life, receive plenty of affection, and spend her days close to the people she loves most. If you’re searching for a loyal little shadow with a heart of gold, Coco just might be the very best girl you’ve been waiting for.   Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.   ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there*** Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.If you have other questions about me you can email Underdog Rescue at <inquiries@underdogrescuemn.com> ADOPTION EVENTS:      Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you for stopping by to see me!  Please fill out an application to set up  a private meeting.    Reginald is an adorable Shih Tzu with a joyful spirit and a personality that makes everyone fall in love with him. He is one of those dogs who seems genuinely happy wherever life takes him—whether that’s a walk around the neighborhood, a car ride, a visit to the vet, or simply meeting new friends. Reginald loves people and greets visitors with enthusiasm, always ready to make a new friend. This sweet boy is playful, easy-going, and full of charm. He loves carrying toys around the house, enjoys going for walks, and is great with other dog-friendly dogs. He remains active, playful, and eager to join in on whatever adventure the day may bring. One of Reginald’s favorite things in the world is snuggling. He loves pressing his whole body against his person, tucking his head under your chin, and soaking up all the affection he can get. He’s the perfect combination of playful companion and cuddle buddy. Reginald does have a cataract in one eye, and another is beginning to form in the other. While we’re not entirely sure how much vision he has in his right eye, it certainly hasn’t slowed him down. His veterinarian believes he can still see light and some shapes, and he navigates his world with confidence and enthusiasm. Potential adopters should be aware that his vision may continue to change over time and may wish to discuss future treatment options with their veterinarian. Friendly, affectionate, and endlessly lovable, Reginald has been one of our easiest and favorite fosters. If you’re looking for a cheerful companion who loves adventures, toys, other dogs, and snuggling close at the end of the day, Reginald may be the perfect addition to your family. Story
Hi, my name is Skippy and I am from Minnesota! Meet Skippy! This sweet, middle-aged gentleman is gentle, friendly, and looking for a special home. Skippy is the sweetest most friendly and gentle boy with the cutest face with his adorable underbite and darkest eyes. This little guy doesn't let his back leg issues slow him down, he loves short walks and long stroller rides. He runs around the house with his stuffies, Kongs and loves to play fetch. Skippy is potty trained and will run to the door when he has to go outside. He will dribble if he doesn't get out right away but that hasn't happened in awhile. He sleeps through the night without needing to go outside. I don't kennel him and he does fine being home alone as long as his comfy bed and toys are available. He loves curling up next to me on the sofa and he sleeps stretched out beside me on the bed. He is happiest when he's close to his people. He does really well in the car, gets along with cats and all people. He loves being around people, when left along he will bark for a couple minutes but then settles down. He barks when I get home but stops after being picked up and held for a few minutes. He would probably do best in a calm environment where he is the only dog, or with a calm older dog. Skippy does need a little extra TLC but he doesn't let anything limit his abilities. He takes his meds like a champ and sits calmly when putting socks on the back paws/ legs. This little guy is all about love and emits so much joy. Skippy will be the best life long companion . From the Vet: Skippy is a sweet, gentle soul who loves nothing more than being near his people. He is the ultimate companion, ready to curl up next to you! Skippy has Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), a condition affecting his spine. Skippy will never return to normal spinal function, and he drags his back feet when he walks. To prevent scrapes and wounds, he will do best wearing protective socks on his hind paws. While his gait is unique, proper medication keeps him comfortable, highly motivated, and excited to move around! His forever family may benefit from having ramps he can use for the bed/couch to prevent him from jumping. Lifelong Dietary Needs: Skippy must stay on a urinary prescription diet to prevent bladder stones, likely the rest of his life. He can have other treats etc. but the best thing for him is a moisture rich diet so mixing it up with canned food or warm water or broth on kibble is a great option for him! Skippy is looking for a calm, loving home where his medical needs will be proudly managed. If you are looking for a loyal best friend and are ready to provide the attentive care he deserves, Skippy is ready to reward you with a lifetime of unconditional love.

Story
A portion of my adoption fee has been sponsored by The Wilbur Fund. The adoption fee sponsorship credit of $100.00 will be applied during the contract process. Hi my name is Riggy Moe and I am from Minnesota! Riggy Moe is a Senior dog, she is very sweet and adorable!! She is full of personality and she is a social gal as she likes to make new friends. She does great with my other dogs as well. She also likes going for walks when the weather is nice. She is doing well with her housetraining and her crate training, I recently have let her run of my bedroom, kitchen and she has been doing well with that. She is used to sleeping on my bed with me as I have doggy stairs for her to use and she definitely let you know her place is on the bed, I affectionately call her my Sassy Princess! She is a wonderful companion dog who already has me wrapped around her little paw as I just adore her! From the Vet: Ms. Riggy Moe is a spunky senior gal ready to find her final forever home for her golden years. She has a history of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye) and requires lifelong medication to keep her eyes comfortable and healthy. Her adopter will need to maintain consistent treatment and establish care with their primary veterinarian for ongoing eye management and monitoring. She has undergone extensive dental care, including numerous tooth extractions, to ensure her mouth is now healthy and pain-free. Upon arrival, Riggy Moe was underweight. After reaching a healthy weight, she successfully underwent surgery to repair a luxated (dislocated) left hip. She has recovered well, but her adopter should monitor her joint health long-term and keep her at a healthy weight to support mobility and comfort.

Story
Some dogs are able to recover from neglect or abuse faster than others…..if only they could tell us about those early years of their life. Cody is a 3.5 yr old. 13# male Shih Tzu/maltese former breeder dog that is still in the process of his recovery, and is hoping someone with patience and previous dog experience is able to take him and continue working with him. Another small, playful dog and a secure fenced yard are also requirements to help him be successful. Cody would not be suited to a family with children of any age because of his fears of new people, loud noises, and fast movements. He has been in his foster home for quite a while – he trusts his foster mom, and is relaxed and seeks attention from her, but transitioning into a new home could be like starting all over again. Let me tell you more about him. His foster mom is retired, and home with him most of the time. Cody prefers to approach her for cuddle time when she is sitting or laying down, instead of towering over him. He comes to her when she calls him inside the house, but doesn’t have recall when he is out in the yard, so he is either contained in a kennel area when out, or drags a long leash around in his fenced area so you can use that instead of grabbing at him when he’s out. If someone scares or forces him, or raises their voice, it takes quite a while for him to forgive you. He tolerates meeting new people, but is more fearful of men and might try to hide from them. His foster home has a doggie door that he has learned to use, but his new home might not; Cody is willing to go out into the cold for a short time, so you will need to establish a schedule that works for him, and have a potty pad down for emergencies. His meals are dry food soaked in water for 5 minutes – he can be reluctant to eat, and acts like he is watching for new people to approach. Cody is most comfortable around the resident dogs, and loves to run and play with them. The other dog/dogs in the home should be tolerant, playful, be good pack leaders and “show him the ropes”. Cody rides OK in the car, in a crate. In warmer weather, he has been taken on short walks – doesn’t understand the purpose of a walk when there is a perfectly wonderful fenced yard to run around in. Cody has a loud bark, so best suited to single-family home instead of a building that shares a wall with another family. Cody is neutered, and current on vaccinations. The heartworm test and tick profile are all negative. He requires grooming about every 3 months. If you have questions, or would like to adopt Cody, call 651-771-5662. His adoption fee is $300 .

Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 1, 2024, 5:42 pm
