Story
Meet Toby! Toby is approximately 1 1/2 years old and is a Terrier mix. He was surrendered by his family because they did not have time for him. Unfortunately, Toby had a rough start during his first few days in the shelter environment. From what we understand, he didn't spend much time away from his family, whom he was very attached to, so this was likely a traumatizing experience for him right off the bat. We were told he hadn't been leashed before, so that can sometimes add to their fear response. Because of how hard it was for him to adjust, we took our time with him and simply let him come around when he was ready. He's such a sweet little guy and we didn't want to make him feel rushed. Toby is still nervous in the shelter environment, but getting more settled a little every day. We have a few employees whom he absolutely adores and will cuddle right into their laps! He also loves to play fetch! We were told he absolutely loves other dogs, but in this setting he's more stressed with their presence, so we're hoping to get him into a foster home with other dogs to see if he can adjust better that way. Fear reactions in dogs are common and need to be met with patience and understanding, so even though he might blossom as soon as he gets out of the shelter, we are hoping to find him a family who is OK with it if it doesn't happen quickly. He likes to have his space to retreat to, so we think a kennel will benefit him in his new environment. He does well in his kennel at the shelter and keeps it clean! Toby was very attached to the toddler in his previous home and we're told he absolutely loves kids. In his last home, he had lots of fun, spunky energy, so we can't wait for him to get back into that happy dog mode! Let's face it, the shelter just isn't for everyone. If you are someone who appreciates the terrier spunk, and the loyalty of a dog like Toby, we know he will be so happy once he finds a family of his own. We are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been approved. Please fill out the following app and email it back to monroecountydogshelter@gmail.com https://www.co.monroe.wi.us/home/showpublisheddocument/35564 Toby is neutered and now current on all vaccines and heartworm testing. His adoption fee is $240.

Story
UPDATE on 10/8/25, Lacy tested positive for heartworm. She will begin treatment, and will benefit from a foster or adoptive home who can provide her with a quiet environment during this treatment. She will need restricted activity and her family would need to coordinate with our vet for her medications and infusion dates. Meet Lacy! Lacy is approximately 6 years old and is thought to be a possible Australian Cattle Dog type mix. Lacy, along with over 80 dogs, was removed from a property in WI before coming to our facility. Unfortunately, Lacy lived in horrendous conditions and will be needing a family who understands her recent trauma and is patient with her during this transition. She is incredibly sweet, OK with being handled, and loves humans, so that's definitely a plus! What she will need help with is basically the dynamics of living as a beloved pet. This could include things like leash walking, car rides, and exploring the outside world. Lacy is obviously used to being housed around other animals, including other dogs and small animals. Because of this, we think she'd likely prefer a home with other animals as she finds comfort being around her housemates here at the shelter. So far, she is doing great in her kennel at the shelter and will likely adjust well in a new home if she has an area she can decompress and resort to if she needs some quiet time. This darling little dog has been through so much already, but she's going to blossom even more once she has a family to call her own who can give her consistency, patience and love. We are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been approved. Please fill out the following PDF Application and email to monroecountydogshelter@gmail.com https://www.co.monroe.wi.us/home/showpublisheddocument/35564 Lacy will be fully vaccinated & spayed prior to adoption. Her adoption fee is $200.

Story
*Boeing is currently being fostered at a Training Facility. Interested adopters will have an appointment scheduled to meet him after an adoption application has been approved Meet Boeing! Boeing is 1-2 years old and is thought to be a Hound/Boxer type mix. We can't know for sure without a DNA test, but we do know that he's 40 ish pounds of pure bred CUTE! Boeing came to us from another WI shelter because they were full/over capacity. Before that, Boeing belonged to someone who had unfortunately dumped him on a pretty busy road. As soon as the owner was contacted and confronted about his abandonment, they halted all contact with authorities and the shelter employees were never able to learn his real name. We do wish that we could find him justice, but at the end of the day, it's most important that he's safe and now he's ready to find a family who would never even think of doing something like that to him. No dog deserves that! Boeing is the sweetest boy. He's friendly, protective, active, seems to loves car rides & knows basic commands! He is one of the smartest dogs you could ever meet. He's young, so his new family should expect to continue any training needs he may still have. He should do well with other dogs and kids as long as everyone is properly introduced and supervised. We were told by the other shelter that he seems overly-interested around kitties, so he could potentially do well with the right experienced owner. Boeing has been severely let down by humans, which is hard to think about. However, all we can do now is focus on his bright & happy future! If you'd like to be a part of that journey, follow the link below! We are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been generally approved: https://www.co.monroe.wi.us/departments/dog-control/online-animal-adoption-application Boeing is fully vaccinated and will be neutered prior to adoption. His adoption fee is $200.

Story
Meet Coal! Coal was born June 6th, 2025 and is thought to be a possible Shepherd/Labrador-type mix. Coal is a very sweet boy who is ready for a loving family. He was originally pulled from an over-crowded shelter in another state via a Wisconsin rescue group. When their foster homes filled up, he made her way to our facility. Unfortunately we don't know much about his past or how he ended up in a shelter, but here's what we can tell you: Coal is very sweet and social with people! He should do well in a home with other pets and children as long as everyone is properly introduced and supervised. Coal is young and will be learning the ways of the world a little bit every day - it's up to his owners to help guide him through that while he grows and matures. His family should expect to be with him through all things puppy! This includes potty training, leash walking, crate training, socialization, basic obedience & manners training, chewing phases, and of course lots of fun play time and adventures outside! If you are looking to add a wonderful and silly companion into your life, Coal would love to meet you! We are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been approved. Please fill out the following PDF Application and email to monroecountydogshelter@gmail.com https://www.co.monroe.wi.us/home/showpublisheddocument/35564 He is neutered, fully vaccinated & microchipped. Story
Smoke is in a foster facility and can be viewed by appointment once an adoption application has been approved. Meet Smoke! Smoke is approximately 2 years old and is an American Staffordshire Terrier type mix. Unfortunately, Smoke came from a home where he witnessed & experienced abuse, so upon his arrival he was understandably overwhelmed & confused. He had a hard time trusting people and had clearly been traumatized. Because of that, we took things slow and let him come around on his own time. Smoke has been making wonderful strides and showing loads of improvements! He's becoming happier, sillier, and more comfortable around everyone he hangs out with. Because of the level of trauma he experienced, however, we decided to place him into foster care with some dedicated trainers who can help Smoke to overcome his fears and learn to trust humans again. He will be in their care until the right family comes along. While at this facility, Smoke has even joined in on Doggy Daycare and absolutely loves interacting with other dogs! This sweet boy has overcome so much trauma and we're so proud to see how well he's doing. His trainers say he's goofy, loving, happy and loving the social life! We are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been approved. Story
UPDATE: Their foster mom says they are affectionate, listen to commands well, they don't display resource guarding and are not destructive. While they are a bit verbally reactive to other dogs on leash, they do well around other family members' dogs and basically ignore them when they share space. (Barrier reactivity is incredibly common, especially in the bossy herding breeds). While at the foster family's farm setting, Buck & Jojo were described as the easiest fosters they've ever had! (they were both raised on a farm). While at the foster family's more suburban home, they faced some challenges as the city life was not a setting that these two are used to, but they're adjusting as best they can and learning every day! They're used to being kenneled and do well with that whenever they need structure, or if strangers come into the home and their protective nature kicks in. Original Bio: Let us introduce you to Jojo (brown & white female) and Buck (black and grey male). Jojo & Buck are 10.5 year old Heeler mixes who were surrendered because they got ahold of some chickens. They had lived on the same farm/with the same family since they were 10 weeks old, so understandably, the shelter environment was incredibly confusing for them when they first got here. They lived mostly outdoors, but did come inside the home as well. They're friendly with people and other pets, they simply cannot live where they'd have access to chickens. (and they do seem to have a bit of a workup when they see tiny dogs, which could be their natural prey drive) Both Buck & Jojo are adjusting SO well to the shelter life! They were a bit shy at first, but now they're outgoing, funny and playful! They both keep their kennels clean and wait to potty until they're outside. They love their dog beds, they love going for walks with our volunteers, and they enjoy time outside together. Both are treat motivated and already know basic commands! Both are super spunky and will keep you giggling every day! They have such big personalities and are incredibly affectionate. We are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been approved. Please fill out the following PDF Application and email to monroecountydogshelter@gmail.com https://www.co.monroe.wi.us/home/showpublisheddocument/35564 Their combined adoption fee has been sponsored! They are both fixed and current on vaccines.
