Story
Meet Elsie! Elsie is 10 years old and is thought to be a possible Yorkie/Pomeranian-type mix. Unfortunately, Elsie's original owner passed away, and she was surrendered when her caretaker was unable to continue caring for her. Elsie did live with another dog and a couple of kitties, and should do well with older/respectful children. While Elsie is a senior and will enjoy the quieter life the majority of the time, she's still plenty spunky and would also make a great companion for daily walks or adventures! Try not to underestimate these little ones - they can be just as good of an adventure buddy as a bigger dog! Elsie will require her vaccines & bloodwork to be updated prior to adoption (which we will take care of) but she is already spayed. We are told she's housebroken, but her new family should expect to assist her with a refresher course, as sometimes accidents happen when they're learning new routines. Her family should also be prepared for the expense of any grooming needs that come with adopting dogs like Elsie. If you are looking for a pocket-sized, happy-go-lucky companion, Elsie would love to meet you! We are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been generally approved: https://monroecountydogshelter.com/apply-adopt.htmlElsie's adoption fee is $240

Story
Meet Alvin! Alvin is an 11 year old male Poodle Mix who is looking for a quiet place to call home. This sweet boy came to us after being neglected for quite some time - his hair was entirely matted over his eyes, leaving him without vision for several months, possibly longer. Because of this, he required eye drops to help produce tear production and lubricate his eyes after he got cleaned up. He was also being kept in a human diaper, which caused injuries to his underbelly area. Alvin is a spunky lil' guy, filled with personality! He is currently in foster care at Bob's House for Dogs, but unfortunately the activity level in their facility is proving to be too much for him, so we're hoping to find him a nice quiet setting for retirement. He's fully vetted, had a dental to remove his bad teeth, and ready for a couch! We think he'll do OK with one or two respectful dogs or cats, but would likely not appreciate an incredibly busy household. If you have room in your heart for a geriatric but fun little doggo, Alvin would love to meet you! Story
UPDATE from Lentil's foster mom:Lentil is adorably handsome and often moves too quickly for the camera ;) He's extremely curious and motivated by treats. He will now willingly take treats from their hands AND jumps up onto the bed! This might not sound like a big deal, but for a dog coming from these circumstances, that's huge! He likes to play and wrestle with the other dogs, and he likes squeaky toys. His foster mom says he runs faster than the sound barrier! He enjoys following the humans around the house and will enthusiastically greet his foster parents at the door. He loves belly rubs and will ask for them, which is also huge progress and shows that he's learned to trust his humans. He enjoys the company of the other dogs in the house, and loves his brother Garbanzo!Meet Lentil! Lentil is approximately 3 years old and is thought to be a Chihuahua Mix.*Lentil is in Foster Care to help him prepare for a forever home.Lentil is a recent intake from a terrible hoarding situation in a neighboring county. Unfortunately, Lentil lived with 40+ other dogs in a small space that was incredibly filthy & unhealthy. That being said, the fact that these dogs were neglected of social skills, loving human touch, and everything in the outside world is even worse. Lentil's adopters will need to understand the commitment of adopting a "Hoarding Case Dog" as they are often unsocialized to the outside world and require extra patience and love.Lentil is used to living with other dogs, so we're hoping to find him a home with another friendly dog whose lead he can follow. We are taking things one step at a time, but his family should understand that he is not yet used to walking on leash and may require extra time to learn that as well.Lentil is a very sensitive baby who has been through a lot. He likes the safety of his kennel, and will retreat in there with his stuffy toy if he needs a break from the noise. He also enjoys his dog bed in his outdoor dog run (he's been using his doggy door to go in and out).We think Lentil would do fine with cats, but we are not recommending him with small children at this time. Because smaller kids/toddlers are often involved with louder noises, quicker movements, and because they're unable to read behavioral cues and respect boundaries, Lentil would likely prefer a home with older kids or adults. This will obviously also be based on the adopter's experience with dogs like Lentil. We know that Lentil's emotional recovery may be a long road. He's been through so much trauma and change in a short amount of time...but we also know that his future can be filled with love and happiness and playfulness and wagging tails if he finds someone who doesn't mind helping him get there. We are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been approved:https://monroecountydogshelter.com/apply-adopt.htmlLentil is neutered, microchipped & fully vaccinated. His adoption fee is $240.

Story
Meet Rocky! Rocky is approximately 3 years old and is a Chihuahua-type mix. Rocky was removed from a large-scale neglect/hoarding case, and will need someone very special to help him navigate life as a "pet".Rocky, like many dogs in situations like this, is unfamiliar with most things that our other dogs might view as normal. Things like leashes, doorways, certain household noises, or even being held and touched. It's heartbreaking that things other dogs just view as 'everyday life', these dogs are completely unaware of and need lots of time to adjust.Rocky's family should expect to be incredibly patient, and understand that he will likely need to come around on his own time. Because of the condition these dogs lived in, they were not potty trained/house broken. Giving them extremely safe containment outside is important, because they'll be easily spooked and hard to catch if they get away.Rocky will likely do best in a home with other pets since he was used to living with many other dogs. Having a happy, friendly, outgoing doggo whose lead he can follow would probably be helpful! What we can say for certain is that, true to being a Chihuahua, once these babies know they're safe and have bonded to a human, they are incredibly loyal and put all of their trust into you. We've already seen Rocky connect with certain people, so we know he'll bond strongly with his new owner(s) and have the best chance at a happy, normal life as a pet. We want nothing more for him!If you think you could give a dog like Rocky a second chance in life, follow the link below. We are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been approved:https://monroecountydogshelter.com/apply-adopt.htmlRocky is neutered and fully vaccinated. His adoption fee is $240.

Story
Meet Quinn! Quinn is approximately 6 years old and was recently brought to our care after a neglect/welfare investigation. She will soon be on the road to recovery and ready to find a place to call home! Unfortunately, Quinn came to us with a severe flea infestation and skin infection. She also had severely matted hair and was underweight. We will be working hard with our vet to get her back to a comfortable state so that her next adjustment can be that much easier for her. She was removed from her situation with another dog, and we're to understand that she does best with other large dogs who have calm demeanors. Quinn is the type of girl who doesn't appreciate energetic/pushy dogs in her face, but lived well with a laid back male dog. She is not recommended to live with cats. Like most GSDs, Quinn is loyal and protective. She's incredibly friendly with everyone she knows, and will definitely let you know if a stranger is approaching her home. She's incredibly intelligent and would be a great companion for someone who wants a walking/hiking buddy, but not a hyper puppy. She's active enough to keep up, but also appreciates a good nap. We're still learning more about Quinn each day as we go, but we can tell you that this girl is incredibly sweet, enthusiastic, and ready to bond with you! *We do recommend researching this breed if you are not already familiar We are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been approved:https://monroecountydogshelter.com/apply-adopt.htmlQuinn is spayed and will be updated on vaccines prior to adoption. Her adoption fee is $200.
