Story
Meet Edith! Edith is approximately 1 year old and is an unknown mix, but has features that are similar to a possible hound-type mix. We can't know for sure without a DNA test, but she is 54 lbs of pure love! Edith was found as a stray near a busy highway and was never claimed by her family. We cannot imagine how scary this must've been for her, so we've been smothering her with love ever since! Edith has a bashful/submissive type of personality and loves to cuddle up to her humans to feel safe. We call her a "Stage 5 Clinger" and she's going to make a wonderful companion to someone who loves cuddly dogs. Because we don't know her past, we're learning as we go with Edith and her family will need to do the same. She may be easily spooked, but takes comfort in her humans and warms up so quickly! She keeps her kennel clean, so we think she's likely potty trained. She responds well to children and should do well around other dogs & cats as long as everyone is properly introduced and supervised. Because of her demeanor, overly-assertive dogs might be intimidating to her. Edith rides well in the car and walks nicely on leash. Continuing with even more training should also help to build her confidence! She is a moderate-energy girl, so a nice daily walk should do the trick for her exercise needs. We also noticed she likes to sniff, so a 'sniffari' through the wooded trails would also likely be enjoyable for her! Edith is such a sweet, loving girl who relies so much on her humans for comfort - if you're the type of person who has a quieter household and the desire to have a companion by your side, Edith is your girl! We are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been approved: https://monroecountydogshelter.com/apply-adopt.html Edith is spayed & fully vaccinated. Her adoption fee is $200.

Story
UPDATE on 10/8/25, Lacy tested positive for heartworm. She will begin treatment, and will benefit from a foster or adoptive home who can provide her with a quiet environment during this treatment. She will need restricted activity and her family would need to coordinate with our vet for her medications and infusion dates. Meet Lacy! Lacy is approximately 6 years old and is thought to be a possible Australian Cattle Dog type mix. Lacy, along with over 80 dogs, was removed from a property in WI before coming to our facility. Unfortunately, Lacy lived in horrendous conditions and will be needing a family who understands her recent trauma and is patient with her during this transition. She is incredibly sweet, OK with being handled, and loves humans, so that's definitely a plus! What she will need help with is basically the dynamics of living as a beloved pet. This could include things like leash walking, car rides, and exploring the outside world. Lacy is obviously used to being housed around other animals, including other dogs and small animals. Because of this, we think she'd likely prefer a home with other animals as she finds comfort being around her housemates here at the shelter. So far, she is doing great in her kennel at the shelter and will likely adjust well in a new home if she has an area she can decompress and resort to if she needs some quiet time. This darling little dog has been through so much already, but she's going to blossom even more once she has a family to call her own who can give her consistency, patience and love. We are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been approved. https://monroecountydogshelter.com/apply-adopt.html Lacy will be fully vaccinated & spayed prior to adoption. Her adoption fee is $200.

Story
Meet Valerie! Valerie is approximately 7-8 years old and is thought to be a possible Border Collie mix. Valerie was found as a stray and no one came to claim her, which breaks our heart because she is the sweetest, happiest girl who loves people! Because of her circumstances, we don't know what her life was like prior to being found and we're simply learning about her as we go. Valerie is polite and well mannered. She is great in her kennel and loves her dog bed. She also keeps her kennel clean and waits to potty until she goes outside, so we think she's potty trained. She walks well on leash and greets everyone with a wagging tail! Valerie should do well around other pets & children as long as everyone is properly introduced and supervised. Because we don't know her past with other animals, we recommend taking things slow while she adjusts to all of the new information. So far, Valerie seems to be an easy-to-please girl who enjoys being by people more than anything! She has a nice moderate energy level so she'll enjoy a daily leisurely stroll with you, but won't ask you to run a marathon. As long as you give her a belly rub every day and let her snore on a cushy dog bed, she'll be happy! We are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been generally approved: https://monroecountydogshelter.com/apply-adopt.html Valerie will be fully vaccinated & spayed prior to adoption. Her adoption fee is $200

Story
Meet Konan! Konan is approximately 4 1/2 years old and is a Husky mix. Unfortunately, Konan was removed from a home after being kept in unlivable conditions and not able to be outside for activity. Because of this, we're hoping to find him a family who can show him just how wonderful life can be! He was kept in a crate that was far too small for him, forcing him to live lying down or stand crouched over. He had parasites and G.I. bacteria, so he was treated immediately upon coming to us so that he could start to feel better. None of this mistreatment or neglect has stopped Konan from LOVING people. He's an absolute sweetheart who loves everyone he meets. One of his favorite things is belly rubs & he's very affectionate. Konan is great at keeping his kennel clean, so we think he'll pick up on the new potty training schedule with consistency and patience. He's playful and will entertain himself with a tennis ball and pile of snow with no complaints. He loves toys, interacting with people, and should do well around dogs given a proper introduction & supervision. (he is not recommended to live with cats due to his prey drive) Konan has a nice moderate energy level, meaning he'd be ideal for someone who wants to be outside to exercise every day, but on a nice day he'd likely love to hang outside in the backyard or snuggle with you on the couch. As most folks with a history of Husky ownership know, it's important that Konan has safe containment anytime he's outside. This breed is famous for being adventurous and clever, so a leash, tie-out or fence is best to keep him safe. One thing to note: Konan has a severe over-bite. While it's one of the cutest things you'll ever see, it's also causing his bottom canines to make contact with the roof of his mouth. We've been working with a vet on our plan for some dental work to ensure Konan has a pain-free mouth for the rest of his life. This will be done prior to his adoption. (and the adorable over-bite will still exist!) Konan has been through so much in his life so far, and we cannot wait to find him someone who loves how goofy and loving this breed can be. If you'd like to meet Konan, we are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been generally approved: https://monroecountydogshelter.com/apply-adopt.html Konan is neutered & fully vaccinated. His adoption fee is $200

Story
UPDATE: Their foster mom says they are affectionate, listen to commands well, they don't display resource guarding and are not destructive. While they are a bit verbally reactive to other dogs on leash, they do well around other family members' dogs and basically ignore them when they share space. (Barrier reactivity is incredibly common, especially in the bossy herding breeds). While at the foster family's farm setting, Buck & Jojo were described as the easiest fosters they've ever had! (they were both raised on a farm). While at the foster family's more suburban home, they faced some challenges as the city life was not a setting that these two are used to, but they're adjusting as best they can and learning every day! They're used to being kenneled and do well with that whenever they need structure, or if strangers come into the home and their protective nature kicks in. Original Bio: Let us introduce you to Jojo (brown & white female) and Buck (black and grey male). Jojo & Buck are 10.5 year old Heeler mixes who were surrendered because they got ahold of some chickens. They had lived on the same farm/with the same family since they were 10 weeks old, so understandably, the shelter environment was incredibly confusing for them when they first got here. They lived mostly outdoors, but did come inside the home as well. They're friendly with people and other pets, they simply cannot live where they'd have access to chickens. (and they do seem to have a bit of a workup when they see tiny dogs, which could be their natural prey drive) Both Buck & Jojo are adjusting SO well to the shelter life! They were a bit shy at first, but now they're outgoing, funny and playful! They both keep their kennels clean and wait to potty until they're outside. They love their dog beds, they love going for walks with our volunteers, and they enjoy time outside together. Both are treat motivated and already know basic commands! Both are super spunky and will keep you giggling every day! They have such big personalities and are incredibly affectionate. We are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been approved. https://monroecountydogshelter.com/apply-adopt.html Their combined adoption fee has been sponsored! They are both fixed and current on vaccines.

Story
Meet Ruger! Ruger is a Labrador Mix who is almost 4 years old and is in need of a new place to call home! Unfortunately, Ruger's original owner moved and left him with family members who were not able to care for him properly. Ruger was quite sad coming into the shelter environment at first, but we will make sure we spend time with him every day to ensure he feels happy and loved until a new family comes along! Ruger is your typical happy-go-lucky labrador type boy! He's full of happy energy, he could play fetch until the sun goes down, and he loves people! He knows Sit and Shake and lived with 2 other dogs in his previous home. We're told he's also friendly with kids, but cats are unknown at this time. Ruger is potty trained, but may have accidents when he's first adjusting to a new home setting. Because of this, we're hoping that his family is patient in helping him learn the new routine. He will make an excellent companion for anyone who wants a dog to hop in the car and go along with you for just about anything, or even enjoy a daily walk, hike or jog! This sweet boy loves to give hugs and should be easy & fun to train as he is treat motivated and ready to please. If you're looking for an active, fun-loving and goofy boy to join your world, Ruger would love to meet you! We are doing all meet n' greets BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an adoption application has been approved: https://monroecountydogshelter.com/apply-adopt.html Ruger is neutered & fully vaccinated. His adoption fee is $200.
