🌲🦝 Backyard Wildlife Litter Has Been Spotted! 🦨🌲No need to set up trail cams… these “wild animals” walked right into our shelter and are now accepting applications for cozy couches and snack providers. 😌🐾✨ Meet the crew:🦊 Fox🦨 Skunk🐿️ Chipmunk🐾 Possum🦡 Badger🦝 RaccoonDon’t worry—these woodland “creatures” are WAY cuter, much more cuddly, and only slightly suspicious when it comes to snacks. They probably won’t steal your chicken eggs… and okay, they might sample the cat food once or twice… but at least no one’s spraying anything when startled. 😂🐶 Their origin story:Mom is a small reddish/brown mixed pup—giving terrier / Miniature Pinscher vibes—and dad is a handsome black & white Australian Cattle Dog / Pitbull mix around 40 lbs.💥 What did they create? Absolute chaos. And we mean that in the best way. These babies are:💙 Blue-eyed🖤 Speckled blue & black👂 Some ears up, some ears down🐾 Some look like tiny pitties, others like… suspiciously adorable red pandas??Basically, it’s a build-your-own-adventure litter and every option is ridiculously cute.Raised with children, good with other dogs, and likely to be good with cats with proper training. 🎉 At 8 weeks old, they’re ready to head off into the wild (your living room)!🩺 Wildlife Wellness Check:✔️ First vaccines✔️ Flea & tick treated✔️ Dewormed✔️ Will be spayed/neutered & microchipped upon adoption⚠️ Warning: May cause excessive smiling, spontaneous baby talk, and a sudden urge to cancel plans and stay home forever.🏡 Adopt your favorite “wild animal” today… before they form a tiny forest gang and take over. 🌳🐾Chipmunk's adoption fee is $250.She can only leave on a foster-to-adopt until she is spayed on May 1. You will be required to bring her back for her spay before you can fully adopt her on May 2. You can stop into the shelter 12- 5 pm Monday through Friday or 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday to meet who is available at that time or put in an application for her on our website www.highlandhumanesociety.org. Please arrive no later than 30 minutes before we close to ensure we have time to do the adoption.***PLEASE NOTE THE SHELTER WILL BE CLOSED THE WEEK OF APRIL 13-18 AND WHEN WE REOPEN ON MONDAY APRIL 20 WE WILL BE IN A TEMPORARY LOCATION AT 3559 STATE ROUTE 136 IN HILLSBORO.We're open Monday through Friday 12-5 pm and Saturday 11-3 pm. Story
🐾 Meet Freya 🐾💕 Female | ~1 year old | ~15 lbs🐶 Dachshund/Pug mix (best guess!)Freya is a gentle little soul who’s just beginning to discover how wonderful life can be. She came from a hoarding situation where she didn’t get much socialization, so the world is still a big, new place to her—but she’s taking it all in with quiet curiosity. 🥺✨She may be timid at first, but underneath that shyness is a very sweet, loving girl who just needs patience and understanding to blossom. Freya is especially comforted by other dogs and would thrive in a home with a well-socialized, confident canine friend to help show her the ropes. 🐕💛🏡 What Freya is working on:Learning how to walk on a leashGetting comfortable being outsideUnderstanding house training and home lifeShe does well with other dogs, though she may need a little time to adjust to larger ones. We’re unsure how she feels about cats. Please bring any children in the home with you to meet her. 🩺 Health Notes:Freya has Demodex (demodectic mange), a non-contagious skin condition. It simply means she’ll need to stay on a quality flea & tick preventative like Simparica, NexGard, or Bravecto to keep her skin healthy.✔️ Vaccinated✔️ Dewormed✔️ Heartworm & Lyme negative✔️ Flea & tick treated (Simparica)✔️ Scheduled to be spayed & microchippedFreya may still be figuring things out, but with love, patience, and a little guidance, she’s going to make an incredibly rewarding companion. Watching her gain confidence and come out of her shell will be something truly special. 🌸🐾💖 If you’re looking for a sweet, shy girl who just needs a chance, Freya is waiting for you.Freya's adoption fee is $250.She can only leave on a foster-to-adopt until she is spayed on April 24. You will be required to bring her back for her spay and rabies vaccine before you can fully adopt her on April 25. Story
Meet Kimber 🐾🤎Kimber🐶 Female Coonhound🎂 Around 6 years old⚖️ 52 lbsKimber came to us from another shelter with her six puppies in tow — a devoted mama who did her job beautifully. 💕 Now that her years of motherhood are behind her, it’s finally her turn to be someone’s baby.Kimber is everything we love about a coonhound — soulful eyes, a curious nose, and that wonderfully special hound personality. If you know and love coonhounds, you know they aren’t just dogs… they’re characters. They’ll follow a scent like it’s their life’s mission, sing you a little hound song now and then, and love their people with their whole heart. She may be 6, but don’t let that number fool you! Kimber still has plenty of pep for:🌲 Walks and wooded trails🎾 Romping around the yard🚗 Weekend adventuresAt the same time, she’s past the wild puppy stage and perfectly content just being your loyal companion. She’s at that sweet spot in life — active enough to have fun, settled enough to truly enjoy being a pet.We know it can be a little harder for adult dogs to find homes, but we’re hopeful there’s someone out there who sees the beauty in a mature, loving girl who’s ready for her forever chapter. Kimber deserves a home that appreciates her hound heart and treats her like the cherished family member she’s meant to be. 🤎Adoption Details:💲 Adoption Fee: $150✔️ Spayed✔️ Vaccinated✔️ On heartworm & flea/tick prevention✔️ Heartworm & Lyme negative✔️ Microchipped upon adoptionIf you’ve been waiting for a loyal, soulful sidekick with just the right balance of energy and calm, Kimber might be your girl. 🐾You can stop into the shelter 12- 5 pm Monday through Friday or 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday to meet who is available at that time. Story
🐄 Meet the Cow Puppies! 🐄The Cow Puppies came to us as tiny bottle babies about six weeks ago after our local dog warden reached out for help. 🍼🐶 They did have a mother, but sadly she was not socialized with people. Because of that, she was interfering with the ability to properly care for the puppies, and we knew that if they stayed with her they would likely grow up fearful and possibly aggressive toward people. So we stepped in, and thanks to some wonderful foster homes these little ones have spent the last six weeks learning exactly what being loved by humans is all about. ❤️🏡 They’ve grown into social, affectionate, happy-go-lucky puppies who greet the world with wagging tails and zero worries. 🐶💛They’ve experienced life in homes, met kids 👧🧒, and been around other animals 🐾, helping them develop into well-rounded puppies. Now that they’ve graduated from foster care, they’re ready to find families of their very own. 🎓🐕For once, we were actually able to see both parents! Mom was a black-and-white, roughly 50-lb dog who looked like a German Shorthaired Pointer mix. Dad was a white-and-brown dog, also over 50 lbs, who appeared to be a German Shorthaired Pointer or possibly a hound mix. Some of the puppies even have a bit of a Beagle-like build. 🐕 In other words: adorable mystery mutts with lots of charm.Right now they range from about 7–12 lbs. ⚖️ Based on their parents’ size, we estimate they’ll grow to be 40+ lbs when full grown, though with mixed breeds we can never guarantee size or breed.Because their spotted coats reminded us of tiny cows, we named them after different cattle breeds. 🐄Girls: Aberdeen, Brown Swiss, Holstein, Jersey, and Longhorn 🎀Boys: Angus, Brahman, and Hereford 💙Each puppy has been:🐾 Spayed or neutered💉 Given their first vaccines🦟 Flea & tick treated🪱 Dewormed📍 MicrochippedTheir adoption fee is $300.If you’re ready for a playful, well-socialized puppy who had the best start thanks to dedicated fosters, one of the Cow Puppies might be the perfect addition to your herd. 🐄🐾💛You can stop into the shelter 12- 5 pm Monday through Friday or 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday to meet who is available at that time. Please arrive no later than 30 minutes before we close to ensure we have time to do the adoption. We're open Monday through Friday 12-5 pm and Saturday 11-3 pm.
