What we know: Litter of 6 transferred from Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley in NM. Found on the side of road when finder was on his way to work, he drove the road looking for mom but could not find her and brought the puppies to the shelter to receive proper care. *** I have been diagnosed with Megaesophagus. Megaesophagus is a common condition that decreases mobility in the muscles of the esophagus, the tube that connects the mouth and stomach. This decreased muscle function leads to esophageal dilation, or enlargement. This seems to be a defect from birth and no surgery is needed and there is no actual treatment that can fix this condition. This is a life long condition, that will require proper management during feeding time to prevent recurrent pneumonia and regurgitation like using a Bailey chair, upright feeding, as well as a daily prescription (Sildenafil) to help decrease lower esophageal sphincter pressure to facilitate passage of food into the stomach; dosing would need to be adjusted with growth and weight gain. Overall puppies seem to be happy and active.*** From the foster: Takis may be the smallest of the Chip Pups, but this little guy has the biggest heart! He absolutely loves his people, and the second you pick him up, his tail starts wagging…and wagging…and doesn’t seem to stop. He’s happiest snuggled close or quietly watching whatever you’re doing, ready to be your ever-present little companion. It’s especially sweet knowing how his story began. Takis and his siblings were found on the side of a road in New Mexico at only about five weeks old, with no mama in sight. After a difficult start and a few weeks of getting healthy, Takis has discovered that people mean warm laps, full bellies and lots of love—and he is embracing every bit of it! He also has a playful puppy side and especially loves crinkle toys. Takis has done wonderfully with kids ages 7–14 and has been fostered in a home with two older, larger dogs. He’s still working on potty training and does well when taken outside regularly, although accidents are still part of puppy life. Give her a yard, a stick or a crinkle toy and she’s ready for a good romp! When playtime is over, though, she’s just as happy slowing down and spending some quiet time with her people.
