Story
Frank the Tank is at our shelter. Please submit an application from our website or just come in to meet him during open hours! Scroll through his photos to see his cute video content! Frank the Tank was found outdoors in rural Kentucky and was brought to a shelter there. Shelters in rural areas don't get a lot of adopters, so he remained in the shelter for 10 months. Fortunately, an animal control officer in the area recognized how special he was, so he landed in a great foster home with a friend of theirs. Frank's foster home reported he was great with their little kids and resident dogs and had no complaints at all. He does well in the crate, only had one accident the first day, and learned the doggy door within hours! He also loves car rides. He hasn't been at Heartland long, but we are already smitten with his nubby tail that constantly wags and his unsinkable exuberance for life. Some who are familiar with Boxers have told us he has the classic "Boxer" personality: exuberant, excited, happy, and playful. Frank the Tank is the most goofy little weirdo! He has huge eyes that always look surprised, and he greets all creatures with the same welcoming joy. He never turns down a playdate, a snuggle, or a soft couch to hang out on. Frank is a great fit for a family, single person, or couple who want to give him the training, positive reinforcement, and love he's been waiting so long for. He hasn't lost hope, come in and see if Frank the Tank is the country boy you've been missing! Frank the Tank's adoption fee is $300.00. This animal is neutered and up to date on core vaccines. Frank the Tank is Heartworm positive and is undergoing treatment with us. Heartland will cover the cost of treatment until he is Heartworm negative. Heartworm is not contagious to other dogs or people; it is a mosquito-borne disease. It is both preventable and curable! Once cured, there are no long term health effects associated with having Heartworm. Frank the Tank is on a 28 day course of antibiotics, after which he will receive three injections to treat his Heartworm, all to take place at our shelter with our veterinarian. Injection 1: 3/17/26 Injection 2: 4/14/26 Injection 3: 4/15/26 That will complete the treatment, but he will need a quick retest at the adopter's vet 9 months post-treatment to make sure that he is Heartworm-free.

Story
Meet Yogi! Yogi is an 8-year-old Boxer with a heart full of love and eyes that tell a story. This senior sweetheart came to us from Berrien County Animal Control, and it’s clear he’s been through a lot—but he hasn’t let that dim his gentle spirit. Yogi is ready to leave his past behind and spend his golden years soaking up the comfort and care he truly deserves. He’s the kind of companion who would be happiest by your side—whether that’s taking a leisurely stroll, lounging on the couch, or simply sharing a quiet moment together. He’s not asking for much—just a warm home, a soft bed, and someone to love him unconditionally. Could you be Yogi’s hero and give him the peaceful, loving retirement he’s been waiting for? From his foster: "Yogi learned to be comfortable in his cage after about a few nights and is safe to stay there for hours at a time. However, we trust him to stay outside his cage, with our two cats who also roam, while we're out/asleep and has never made any problems. He never barks and only whines when he wants to go outside. Yogi loves going on long walks (once we went for 2 hours and he still had gas in the tank). It’s much more energy than we thought he would, but that’s probably because we don’t have a yard for him to make his own fun. We’ve also discovered his love of tennis balls and squeaky toys. He loves competing in races for his tennis balls and squeaky toys. He’s not very interested in my cats at all, which is perfect. After about a week or two, they’ve become completely comfortable around him though they’ll get out of his way if they see him coming. It’s made things way less stressful knowing I can trust him with my cats. He seems to have zero prey drive, since he also isn’t interested in rabbits or squirrels that scurry across the sidewalk in front of us. He’s never had an accident in my apartment, though he has thrown up in a car before so now we bring a barf bowl which is pretty effective. We’ve started feeding him a mix of wet food to supplement his diet and help him put on some weight. He seems very fit now. His skin has also improved dramatically. There are no visible bumps or scars on his back, unlike how it looked when he first came home with us. We’ve been teaching him some tricks too. He knows “Stay” and “Come” pretty well, though won’t always listen if there are a lot of distractions. I’ve been teaching him “Leave it” and “Sit” as well. We thought he might be a little deaf at first because he’d ignore his name, but he definitely responds to it now. He’s very friendly with dogs that he meets. He likes to say hi, but he never obsesses over them which helps make him a lot less intimidating and a good companion dog. Similar to people, he likes to say hi and then move on with his walk. He's very sweet and not at all dominating. He’s very calm when meeting people and animals. Yogi is also very tolerant of showers. While he whines a bit, he does not struggle when properly tethered and is not dramatic compared to other dogs. He is further very tolerant of us cleaning his paws 3x a day when we come back from his walks so that he doesn't bring in dirt. Overall, he’s a really sweet dog and I love him. He’s the cutest thing. He loves cuddling with us on the couch but also isn’t too clingy and will stay out of my room."
