Leo is a 2-3 year old, 57 pound, husky mix.  He  is a fairly calm boy...though he will have the occasional puppy burst of energy.  Leo's will sit when you ask him to, and will gladly be your co-pilot when driving - he loves car rides and will jump right in the back seat and chill out for the trip.  He is friendly with people and dogs. Personality: friendly, affectionate, fairly calm, good in car Good with: people, and dogs.  No cats for Leo. Training: knows the command for 'sit' Estimated age: approximately 2-3 years old Weight: 57 pounds Medical: vetted, up to date on vaccinations, neutered, and microchipped Location: Currently located with a foster in Texas, but if adopted, will come to the NJ area on our next monthly transport.  ​Background: Like so many dogs, Leo's story is a sad one.  Leo spent the beginning of his life with a caring and loving owner who regularly took him to the vet and kept him inside (which is not typical for dogs in the south).  Unfortunately, Leo's owner had to move into a senior residence, so he entrusted a friend to care for his beloved dog.   Long story short, that "friend" kept Leo chained up outside without food and water.  He was so skinny when he was rescued .  He was brought to a kill shelter with a 3 day deadline for euthanasia.  Luckily we were able to pulled him out in the nick of time.  Once we had him seen by a vet we discovered that he was heartworm positive.  We paid for his treatments and are happy to announce that he is now heartworm free and he is a very happy and healthy boy!  He loves meeting new people and spreading joy like only a good boy like Leo can do!   We really want to find Leo a loving, stable home.  He must have been so confused, going from the love and safety of his original owner to being tied up and ignored outside. Therefore, her current appearance in person may differ slightly from her earlier puppy photos. * With People: Can be a bit hesitant at first and tends to keep her distance from strangers. However, if approached slowly to let her sniff and be given gentle pets, she opens her heart very quickly. Once she is familiar with someone, she proactively approaches them to display her sweet, lovable charms. Likes to stick by your side and jumps happily when she’s excited. * With Dogs: Coexists beautifully with her foster mate, frequently engaging in cheerful, playful antics and puppy games. Walks up to new dog friends, wagging her tail to say hello. * With Cats: Has not met a cat yet. * Separation Anxiety: Whines slightly at first, but calms down quickly with time. * Potty Training: Does well with both indoor and outdoor potty. Is not a fan of brushing but patiently endures it. Handles nail trims quite well. * Walks: Is generally very good on walks. Sometimes suddenly darts forward or stops, but is improving a lot. Absolutely loves going for walks! * Car Sickness: Travels well in vehicles without displaying any signs of motion sickness. * Biting: As she is in her teething phase, she previously chewed on hands or electrical cords; however, she is incredibly smart and quick to learn—after being corrected, she stopped the behavior and follows boundaries beautifully. * Barking: May let out soft, eager whines when she wants to be picked up or held. Barks a little when the door bell rings. * Personality & Temperament: Is a slightly sensitive and cautious soul, but is smart and forms a profoundly deep attachment to people. My dog is 9 years old, almost 10, and is a very friendly, loving, and gentle dog. He gets along very well with children and other dogs. He is fully house-trained and used to living in a home. Sweet Zari is one of those dogs. 💔🐾 Zari was found roaming the streets of South Texas near the Mexico border alongside a smaller dog. They were scavenging through trash cans, desperately searching for something to eat. Neighbors grew frustrated with them for knocking over garbage, but these two weren't being bad. They were hungry. They were trying to survive. For months, they were seen wandering the streets. Facebook posts kept appearing, but despite all the attention, nobody seemed willing to step in and help. Then, in early October 2026, a sanctuary was tagged in a post about them. And this time, things were different. ❤️ An amazing team of compassionate people immediately jumped into action. Together, they were able to secure both dogs and get them to the sanctuary, to safety. They were covered in fleas and ticks, skinny, and dehydrated. They had been struggling to survive on the streets for far too long. But once they were safe, everything began to change. With care, food, and kindness, these babies started to thrive. The smaller dog was transferred to another rescue, while Zari remained at a wonderful sanctuary, where we agreed to help her find the forever home she so desperately deserves. And now?
