Meet Petey! Petey is a 2.5-year-old, 51-lb neutered Boxer mix with a friendly, loving personality. He was a shelter favorite thanks to his sweet nature and easygoing temperament. Petey does well with other dogs and is great with kids, making him a wonderful family companion. Petey came to the shelter after his owner lost their home in a fire and could no longer care for him. Despite this sudden change, Petey has remained resilient, affectionate, and eager to bond with people. Sadie looks to be a boxer mix who was found tied up outside in Texas. She was brought to the local shelter and is currently staying in an outdoor kennel. She suffered from a bad skin infection and once we saw pictures of her, we arranged for her to be taken to a vet to try to provide some relief. We are happy to say that her skin is healthy now, and her fur has fully grown back! Unfortunately this poor girl is still in the shelter as we have no available fosters in TX that can take her in. We will continue trying to find her a temporary foster home, but better yet, we are hoping to find her a forever home in the NJ area. Sadie is estimated to be 18 months old and she weighs 40 pounds. If you would like to apply to adopt Sadie, we will bring her to the NJ area. She will be ready to arrive on our March transport. Personality: friendly Good with: people, and dogs. There are some things in rescue work that are simply impossible to understand. One of those things is how anyone could throw a big, beautiful black Boxer from a moving truck and drive away. But that is how Troy’s story began. On a quiet country road, good people working in their yard witnessed the unthinkable. They saw a truck slow down just enough to push this large dog out onto the pavement. He hit the ground on his head, dazed and bleeding, while the truck sped off without a second glance. Confused and hurting, Troy didn’t know who to trust. It took time, patience, and soft reassurance before he would allow those same strangers to help him. When he finally climbed into their backseat, his big, injured head rested in his rescuer’s lap the entire drive — seeking comfort even after such betrayal. Physically, Troy has healed well. His wounds have closed and his strength has returned. But emotionally, you can still see that he is waiting for someone to prove that he is safe… truly safe… forever. And here is the remarkable part — Troy is an exceptional dog. He is sweet, obedient, and wonderfully behaved in the home. He does not dig, does not climb fences, and respects his space. He wants structure, kindness, and someone to belong to. While he can coexist with some larger dogs, he would truly flourish as the only dog in the home where he doesn’t have to compete for affection. Cats are not a good match for him. A securely fenced yard would give him the freedom to stretch his legs and enjoy life while feeling protected. Troy doesn’t need pity. He needs commitment. Ruthie is a 2-year-old, 60-lb Boxer mix with a gentle soul and a brilliant mind. Before coming into rescue, Ruthie lived on her own for at least 6 months, skillfully evading capture, multiple trapping attempts, and surviving in an industrial area of town. Fed by kind mechanics and workers, she learned how to stay safe, avoid danger, and always show up for food — and that intelligence still shines through today. After a dramatic capture, Ruthie has been in a foster home, where she’s proven to be a very polite houseguest. She is fully house-trained and, even at her scariest moments, has never shown a hint of aggression — no growling, no raised lips, just fear. Ruthie is shy and deeply cautious with people, but she is sweet, gentle, and incredibly observant. We would not be surprised if Ruthie spent some of her life in someone’s home. This brainy girl reads the room like a pro. She knows when a human might approach and will quietly skedaddle to keep herself feeling safe. While she’s still very nervous about leashes and handling, she allows most people to gently scratch her muzzle, and she’s learning — slowly but surely — that human touch isn’t such a bad thing. Watching her progress has been incredibly rewarding, especially as she’s started to enjoy ear scratches and soft affection from her foster mom. Ruthie is a great pack dog. She does beautifully with dogs of all sizes and temperaments and enjoys playful wrestling with dogs her size, but doesn’t demand play. She happily coexists with the resident Chihuahua in her foster home. Ruthie is calm and content indoors and also enjoys a daily visit to the dog park. She’s a quiet presence who’s perfectly happy lounging on a chair, listening to her foster mom’s Zoom calls, and soaking in the safety of home life. At home, Ruthie is her foster mom’s quiet shadow. She sleeps in her room, wiggles with excitement when she comes home, follows her around the dog park — and yet may still hop off her bed and slip away if that same foster mom walks toward her for a pet. With Ruthie, trust is built in tiny, meaningful moments, and every day brings progress. Because of her history, Ruthie is a high flight-risk dog, especially in the early days. She will need a very committed adopter with a securely fenced yard, experience with fearful or flight-risk dogs, and a willingness to use safety tools like GPS collars, double leashes, and secure handling. Strength matters too — this is a 60-lb girl who needs someone confident and prepared. Ruthie has been around children at the dog park and treats them like little adults — with polite, reserved hesitation. She is food-motivated, sweet, and incredibly smart. With patience, structure, and time, she has all the makings of a truly special companion.
