Story
Hi! My name is Moana and I am an owner surrender. This special needs beautiful little girl has made wonderful strides in the 2 months that I've had her. She's getting stronger bit by bit. She is personality plus! She loves to snuggle, loves to play and just gets sooo very excited when you talk to her, get down on the floor to play with her and if the big resident dogs are even just near her. She has a feisty side, too, and does not like to be left out of anything!! She is making great progress in potty training and she'll usually vocally alert you-day or night- when she has to go...but know that she'll still have some accidents. At this point, she doesn't have the coordination to be upright to eat on her own so I still hold her securely in my lap to feed her several small meals a day and also to keep her hydrated (I soak her kibble and still give her some soft food. She will not drink straight water so we are still working on that and by soaking her kibble, it flavors the water and she'll drink it to get to the kibble.) She loves all people and dogs. She hasn't had contact with cats yet that I know of. She'll need flat, safe surfaces when she's in her wheels. She does best on carpets or rugs or grass when upright in her harness to practice balance, strength and walking. She'll need to continue strengthening her muscles and working on her balance. At this point, she cannot get up from the floor on her own. Once she's on her side, she can only move around by scratching/shuffling. She does great for car rides. She sleeps nicely in her soft sided kennel at night, only alerting me by whimpering once or twice per night that she has to go out to potty. She is one of the happiest pups that I've ever fostered and will give her forever family sooooo much love!! From the vet team: Hello! I arrived at Secondhand Hounds as part of the Fighter Fund program due to my Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH) diagnosis. CH is a condition resulting from inadequate development of the cerebellum which causes lack of balance/coordination, ambulating, head bobbing, tremors, etc. The SHH Vet Team has provided my foster with physical therapy exercises to help gain strength but I will always have this condition. I have a wheel chair and a harness to help with movement but it is also recommended that my future adopter lay down rubber mats to help with my movement. My future adopter should understand my condition and monitor my health with a primary veterinarian. Also, I have an upcoming surgery with an opthamologist due to ablation of eyelashes which will freeze and kill the hair follicles to help prevent regrowth of these abnormal hairs. This surgery and eye recheck appointment will be covered by SHH as long as it is performed at Animal Eye Speciality Center/Secondhand Hounds Vet Center.

Hi. I'm Honey Badger. I am from Kentucky. Honey Badger, or just Honey, is a very sweet girl. She wants to be near you at all times so if you are looking for a shadow dog, she is the one for you! She would love to lay on the couch next to you while you read or watch TV at night. Need to go to the kitchen for a snack? She is right there with you! Same with a bathroom break. She will be patiently waiting outside the door for your return! Honey gets along great with my dog and does seem to be a bit more alpha to my dog's submissiveness. They love to run around my yard playing and chasing each other. Honey does seem a bit more submissive towards people though. She had one accident in the house that was more a submissive issue than a can't hold it any longer issue. She appreciates slow approaches with humans and will quickly settle in for the long haul if you keep petting her. In fact, if you stop she might push her body into you to keep going and not stop! She hasn't interacted too much with kids yet. She will jump on you to get attention, which we are working on, so maybe older kids would be ideal. But she might do fine with younger ones as well. She is pretty much potty trained. Doesn't necessarily let me know if she needs to go out, I just keep to a regular schedule. She does fine overnight and all day while I am at work. She is kennel trained in that she will go in nicely with a treat and won't bark at all once in there, but I don't think she likes being in there that much. She might do fine left out as she doesn't seem to be interested in getting into anything. She is a good walker, doesn't pull too much on the leash. She might tangle you up a bit but that can be worked on! She hasn't expressed any interest in toys despite my dog trying her best to play tug with her. That might come as she settles in more. Honey is pretty athletic and agile. I have some fencing up in my yard and she has been flying over it! She could be a great agility dog! She can be pushy at doors and we have been working on waiting to be allowed out of the kennel and out the back door. Something to keep in mind and continue to work on. She has chased a few bunnies out of my yard but ignores squirrels on walks. Not sure how she would do with cats. Honey is an all around sweetheart. She will be a great addition to someone's family!

Hi. I'm Mink. I am from Kentucky. From the foster: This adorable fur baby has a coat as soft as a cloud. Her floppy ears and expressive eyes make her even more irresistible. Luna's petite size might make you want to protect her forever, but don't let that fool you; she's got a heart full of courage and a spirit that's larger than life. You can play pin the tail on Mink, because she is missing hers. She is great with other dogs and kids, and my foster mom thinks I'll do great with cats as well.

Hi. I'm Ferret. I am from Kentucky. Ferret is a sweet puppy who all she wants in the world is to be snuggled and return those adorable puppy kisses! She is learning all about potty training, but for being so young still needs lots of frequent potty breaks. She still has a few accidents, but that is expected at this age. Every time she goes outside, she goes potty, however, so it's coming along nicely. Ferret does well in her crate at night only if someone is within sight of her kennel. If not, heartbreaking howels emit from her tiny little body. Our resident dog provides some comfort to her by being in the same room with her, but Ferret still prefers to see a human from her crate. She is great with kids, great with dogs and great with cats! She would prefer another dog sibling in the house with her as she loves to play and explore all things that are interesting to puppies (which is just about everything), but it is not necessary if there are a lot of things going on in the household. She's learning how to walk on a leash - she likes to walk in-between your legs, so it requires more training on the human's part so as not to step on her than on her part at this point in time! She also loves tug of war and chewing on toys.

Hi. I'm Weasel. I am from Kentucky. Weasel is a beautiful puppy, inside and out. Don't let the name fool you. She has typical puppy high energy playtime followed by sudden snuggles and naps. She is a big fan of fetching squeaky toys or just about anything that rolls, and had fun splashing in a lake. Weasel has been a big hit with the kids in the neighborhood, and she'll cuddle in anyone's arms. She has been respectful but inquisitive with our resident dogs, and cautious in new situations. She is always very excited when she sees or hears someone she knows. She generally likes to stay close to people, and has really only been vocal for the first couple minutes when she is put in a kennel. House training has a way to go yet, but she is better than average for a puppy her age. This is at 10 weeks and 10 pounds. She looks quite different than her mother, so we're having fun trying to guess what breed(s) the father is.

Story
Hi, I'm Noosa. I am from Kentucky. From the foster: Noosa is a sweet but spunky smart little dog who just needs a chance to build some confidence and let her real personality show. She takes time to warm up to people, but you can clearly see that this good girl wants to please her people once she gets past her fear. Noosa is extremely smart and is well on her way to being housebroken especially on a regular schedule. Noosa has done well with and is very respectful of the other dog in her foster home and has started following her lead on things like meals and going "out". Noosa just had surgery on 9/11 to fix some broken stitches from her spay procedure, and has been recovering well from that. Noosa is a bit of an "Houdini". She has escaped from both a surgical cone and pet harness multiple times each while inside the house. While she hasn't tried to escape from the house, her ability to get out of her harness and her fear keeping her from bonding at this point make me feel that extra vigilance is needed with her outside, be that double leashes and possibly a fenced in yard.
