Story
Meet Derek! At four and a half months old and just over 20 pounds, this curious pup is ready to discover the world with you. Derek arrived at BENCHS alongside his brother, and now he’s looking for an active home where he can continue to learn, play, and explore. He is incredibly inquisitive and loves engaging with people, always eager to see what you’re up to and be part of it. Toys are a big hit for him, and he’s at that fun stage where everything is an adventure. Derek is currently working on potty training and will need a home that can continue to guide him with consistency and patience as he polishes those skills. He would likely do well either as the only dog or with another social, friendly dog who can help show him the ropes. We are unsure how he would do with cats, though he has shown some interest. If you’re looking for a playful, people-loving puppy to grow alongside, Derek might just be your perfect match.

Story
Don’t let the name fool you. This handsome boy is all dog, all heart, and full of personality. Kitty came to BENCHS as an unclaimed stray from the City of Mankato, and we have since learned more about his background to help us find the right match for him moving forward. Kitty was previously known as Houston and was rehomed in May 2025. He lived as an indoor dog and did well with people, including children ages 8 to 14. He was crate trained overnight, rides well in the car, and enjoys human attention. He is a smart dog who can open certain doors and may slip out of a tie out if it is not secure, so supervision and good management will be important. Kitty weighs about 68 pounds and was born on April 20, 2023. He is a young, energetic dog with a lot of enthusiasm for life and enjoys showing off the commands he already knows. In his previous home, Kitty lived with dogs and did well with a spayed female, but he was involved in a serious incident with an intact male dog. Because of this history, Kitty is dog selective and would do best as the only dog in the home or with careful, experienced placement. He also has a high prey drive and should not live with cats, chickens, or other small animals. Kitty is a bright, powerful young dog who will need a home that can provide structure, clear boundaries, and continued training. With the right environment and guidance, he has the potential to be a loyal and rewarding companion. If you are an experienced dog owner looking for a confident, intelligent dog and are prepared to meet Kitty’s needs, he may be the right fit for you.

Story
Phyllis is a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy with a personality that fills the room! Animated, silly, and full of charm, Phyllis loves making people laugh with her playful antics. When she's not busy exploring the world around her, she's happiest curled up in your lap, soaking up all the cuddles she can get. She currently weighs 10.5 pounds and is growing quickly. Like many Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies, Phyllis is both adventurous and intelligent. She is curious about everything and approaches life with enthusiasm, confidence, and a healthy sense of mischief. Whether she's investigating a new toy, following a scent, or discovering a new corner of the yard, Phyllis is always ready for her next adventure. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are known for their loyalty, athleticism, intelligence, and strong bonds with their families. Originally bred in southern Africa, they are powerful, active dogs that thrive when given appropriate physical exercise, mental enrichment, and consistent training. Ridgebacks are often affectionate with their people while maintaining an independent streak, making them a wonderful breed for owners who understand and appreciate their unique characteristics. Because of the needs and temperament of this breed, Phyllis is looking for an indoor home with a family that is familiar with Rhodesian Ridgebacks or has thoroughly researched the breed and is prepared to meet their exercise, training, and socialization needs. We are seeking adopters who understand that adorable puppies grow into large, active dogs that require lifelong commitment. Phyllis and her siblings will turn 8 weeks old on June 9th and will likely be ready to head to their new homes in mid June. We are currently accepting applications for this litter and encourage interested adopters to apply early, as we anticipate a great deal of interest in these puppies. If you're looking for a loyal companion with a silly spirit, a cuddly side, and a heart full of adventure, Phyllis may be the perfect addition to your family!

Spayed or Neutered,
Story
This adorable little puppy came to BENCHS alongside four of her siblings and has quickly won everyone over with her playful personality. Weighing in at 18.2 pounds, Molly has an outgoing personality and loves being part of the action. While we cannot say for certain what breeds make up this litter, our best guess is perhaps a Cattle Dog and Terrier mix of some sort. Molly already shows many of the traits people love about these kinds of dogs. She is smart, active, inquisitive, and always ready to learn something new, especially if treats are involved. Molly is extremely food motivated, which makes her a wonderful candidate for continued positive reinforcement training as she grows. Molly is looking for an active indoor home that will continue helping her build confidence, learn good puppy manners, and channel her energy into fun and enriching activities. Puppies with her likely breed mix often thrive in homes that enjoy walks, adventures, training sessions, puzzle toys, and making their dog part of everyday life. She is very dog friendly and continues to live comfortably with her siblings here at the shelter. Molly can be a little vocal at times, but it is usually just her enthusiastic way of expressing herself. Despite her tiny size, she is social, outgoing, and very friendly with new people. Like any young puppy, Molly is still learning about the world around her and will need patience, consistency, and continued training as she grows. In return, she promises to bring a whole lot of personality, laughter, and love into the lives of the people lucky enough to call her family.

Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Zeus came to BENCHS through no fault of his own. His previous owner was experiencing housing difficulties and made the difficult decision to surrender him so he could find a stable home. Zeus enjoys just about any kind of treat and isn't particularly picky about flavors. He is housetrained and does a great job letting his people know when he needs to go outside. He understands words like "outside" and "potty" and is reported to be very reliable with his bathroom habits. Zeus sleeps comfortably in a kennel at night, though his previous owner felt he would likely do just fine sharing a bed or relaxing elsewhere in the home. He rides well in the car and enjoys being included in adventures. Like many dogs, Zeus can be a little nervous during thunderstorms or fireworks. He has also been known to reverse sneeze after drinking water, which was reported to be normal for him. At the shelter, Zeus struggled a bit with the transition and stress of a new environment. Because of that, he may alarm bark when meeting new people for the first time. He has very much earned his honorary Chihuahua card and has the classic Chihuahua temperament: devoted to his people, suspicious of strangers until they prove themselves worthy, and never afraid to share his opinions. Once Zeus realizes he is safe and gets to know someone, he forms bonds quickly and deeply. The Zeus who knows you is affectionate, silly, vocal, and full of personality. He enjoys being close to his people and loves attention from those he trusts. He would do best in a quieter home without a lot of commotion, where he can settle in at his own pace and build confidence. While he doesn't seem particularly picky about toys, we have learned a few favorites during his stay at the shelter. Zeus loves sprawling out on big, comfy dog beds and has a soft spot for plush stuffed animals. Few things make him happier than a cozy place to nap and a stuffed toy nearby. He walks fairly well on a leash. He may pull a little at times but overall is an enjoyable walking companion. He has primarily been walked using a collar rather than a harness. He enjoys affection, especially scratches behind his ears and pets down the middle of his back. While he can be a bit sensitive about having his ears handled, his previous owner noted that this improved as he became more comfortable and trusting with people. He is comfortable being picked up by people he knows well. Around the house, Zeus is polite and respectful. He may hop up on the furniture to be near you, but typically waits for an invitation first. Zeus has previously lived successfully with another small female dog. His previous owner reported that he got along well with familiar dogs. For the right person, Zeus is the kind of dog who becomes deeply devoted. He may not be the dog who loves everyone immediately, but once you're in his circle, you'll have a loyal little shadow, a warm lap companion, and a tiny best friend who will happily keep you informed about everything happening in the neighborhood.
