Meet Tonka!
Some dogs want toys.
Some dogs want treats.
Tonka just wants you.
This 9-year-old, 12-pound Dachshund was rescued from a home along with 41 other dachshunds.
Tonka is the definition of a Velcro dog. His favorite place in the world is in someone's lap, and if there isn't one available, he'll happily search the house until he finds one. He's happiest when he's close to his people, soaking up belly rubs, cuddles, and all the affection he can get.
His foster watched him instantly bond with their 8-year-old son. The two became inseparable almost overnight. Tonka followed him everywhere, slept snuggled beside him each night, and even tried to follow him onto the school bus one morning because he couldn't bear to see his little buddy leave. That's just who Tonka is—when he loves you, he loves you with his whole heart.
Like many rescue dogs, Tonka is looking for a family that understands building trust takes time. He does experience some separation anxiety and can be fearful in certain situations, particularly around some men he doesn't know. Because of this, he'll need adopters who are patient, consistent, and willing to let him adjust at his own pace. Tonka isn't the type of dog who will instantly feel at home—and that's okay. What he needs most is someone who understands that trust isn't built overnight, but through kindness, routine, and showing him day after day that he's safe.
The beautiful thing about Tonka is that once he loves you, he loves you with everything he has. His foster has seen firsthand how deeply he bonds with his people, and it's impossible not to fall in love with his unwavering loyalty and affectionate heart. His perfect family won't expect perfection on day one—they'll celebrate every little milestone and know that the strongest bonds are often the ones that take a little time to build.
