Graham/ Cavalier King Charles Spaniel 4yo/ 15lb neutered/microchipped UTD on vaccinations Flea/Tick/Heartworm prevention current Please read the bio in its ENTIRETY. If you feel you are a perfect match, please send an email to gateway4paws@gmail.com for additional information. Only complete & qualified applications will be considered or contacted for adoptions. We are a 100% foster-based rescue. Applications can be found on our website. We do not allow shipping & do not transport. You must live within 350 miles from Maryville, IL & able to drive for a meet and greet. Graham was released to us with some other Cavaliers when a breeder was downsizing. All he has ever known is breeding, that is the only time he was touched or held. He was moved from his crate to breed & then put back in his kennel. Left in a crate, day after day, week after week, year after YEAR. Never going outside, never seeing sun or grass, never being cuddled. If you aren’t familiar with this breed, please do some research. His wellness exam was “unremarkable”, meaning the doctor found him to be healthy! He has been so excited & happy with the new comforts he has found. He is an excellent car rider & loves to relax on the couch with his foster siblings. Graham has learned the freedom of having a big backyard where he can explore. He loves to run big giant circles all around the yard until he is out of breath! He will tolerate a harness but not a leash. He certainly will not do his potty business on a leash. After all his trauma, we are not going to approach leash training or recommend it at this time. We will be requiring a VERY secure physically fenced yard/area for potty training, as that is something he will need to do immediately upon arriving at his new home. Graham is doing well with house training. Graham still feels the urge to mark until he is comfortable in his area. Therefore, he wears a belly band until he is familiar, then the belly band is removed. This prevents Graham’s foster mom from having to make sudden movements (which scare him) if he needs correction. Graham certainly enjoys the treat he gets for being a good boy when he potties outside. His family will need to establish a schedule so he can continue to be successful. Graham will take a treat from your hands. But he is still wary of hands. Being in his previous environment for so long, trust was never established or earned, Graham simply doesn’t have that relationship with humans, yet. Graham’s foster family has Cavalier experience & he has foster Cavalier siblings, so they have really been working on what it is like to live in a house with normal everyday noises & activities. Graham is not ready to be a “pet” yet. He needs time to continue decompressing, time to build trust, time to establish relationships. Until then, Graham’s family will need to be prepared to be very patient. He will not let you pick him up, but he enjoys being around people & other dogs. He needs a chance to just exist in his environment until he sees that this good life is forever. His nightmare is over & there is only love & comfort in his future. At night he sleeps with his foster siblings, sometimes they choose the big bed, sometimes they choose a kennel. When his foster family is gone, he likes to crate with his foster siblings & have soothing music or the television on. Please apply quickly if you meet the requirements. Graham would like to start getting to know his family as soon as possible!

Applications can be found on our website at gateway4paws.org Betsy was released to rescue because she wasn’t producing good litters for her breeder. She is really coming along since being in her foster home. She prefers her foster mom but still adjusting to accept her foster dad. She enjoys laying around and chewing on her bones or snuggling with her other foster brother, Hershey who is also available for adoption. She will do best learning from other 4 legged siblings so we would like to see her find a home with some siblings of similar size & energy level. Betsy has not had any accidents in her foster home for weeks but an new home needs to understand she could have accidents until she gets a new routine down. She is still not accepting of the harness and leash yet. We know she will get there but it is just not in the cards for her yet. Therefore for her safety, a secure physical fenced yard is a must. If you are looking for a quiet friend that will listen to you talk, with no judgement & no disagreement, Betsy is exactly what you are looking for! Betsy is an absolute doll, and she will make a fabulous roommate. We hope to find her a human friend that is interested in spending the day with Betsy watching & observing the world. Betsy isn’t a lap dog (yet) or an ‘adventure’ dog. She is a dog that is finally getting her chance to lounge around & be a dog!

Stitch/ Shih Tzu 2yo/ 13lbs Neutered/Microchipped UTD on vaccinations Current on flea/ tick/ heartworm prevention Please read the bio in its ENTIRETY, it will answer most of your questions. If you are a perfect match, please send an email to gateway4paws@gmail.com for additional information. Only complete & qualified applications will be considered/contacted. We do not allow shipping & do not transport. You must live within 350 miles from Maryville, IL & able to drive for a meet and greet. We are a 100% foster-based rescue. Applications can be found on our website at gateway4paws.org Stitch is settling in a home for the first time in his horrible, short, little life. We know people will ask, so, yes, Stitch was a breeder release. We won’t dwell on how awful that experience was, or how that breeder is allowed to continue to operate. We are just extremely thankful that he was allowed to come to us & has a chance to be happy & free. We will be looking for a home that is prepared to give him time & space to get comfortable. His foster mom sent this update to us: “Today marks one month he has been with us. He continues to learn how to be a dog. It's apparent that Stitch had very little human interaction before coming to us and what interaction he had does not seem to be good. He came to us extremely fearful of humans. If we came near him he would run, hide and poop, refusing to be touched by a human. If you could catch him to pick him up, he seized up & turned into stone. However, we work with him every single day and I'm glad to report he is showing progress (especially the last few days). We are now approaching him slowly. He retreats to a corner and lets us give him a few pets; we then gently pick him up from the corner. He loves his brothers & sisters. If they are around, he doesn't have a worry in the world. The first 3 weeks he was glued to the hip of our male dog Oscar (which we found interesting). This past week he's been playing with the girls quite a bit. You can run a vacuum cleaner right next to him, open & load the dishwasher, do laundry, sweep the broom right over his feet, and he doesn't care. He sleeps with us & is great in the big bed! He has a hearty appetite, loves treats, plays with toys from time to time, and has learned to use steps. We do use a belly band (he marks) but anytime he goes outside he does go to the bathroom. We tried walking him once, but he is not ready yet. I think in time that will come.” Stitch is a sweet boy that is just waiting to come out of his shell. We’ve seen it when he plays with the other dogs. So, to sum it up, here are the highlights. He will need a secure physically fenced yard, as he will need to immediately have a safe place to go potty. In time, his family can work on leash training, but it isn’t going to happen any time soon. He is a very good boy that doesn’t need to be crated & is always on his best behavior when his foster family is gone. They leave him in a pet-proofed area of the home until they return. Stitch needs a low-key family that will allow him to bloom. If his family has another furry friend of similar size, it would be a plus, but is not mandatory. He enjoys being able to be in the same room as his family at night, and really likes to sleep in the big bed. Napping on the couch is part of a normal routine day for him. Please apply if you have a nice slow-paced home for Stitch to join.

Applications can be found on our website. Hershey was a pretty shy boy when he first arrived. He was scared & not sure what the future was going to be. Well, he arrived at his foster home & was greeted by some furry friends who assured him it was going to be fabulous from here on out. He spent the first few weeks just watching. Watching the humans, watching the other dogs, & watching the household activities. Hershey will accept pets on his head & back. Recently he has learned the feeding & potty schedule. He wags his tail & is displaying behaviors letting us know he is comfortable fitting in & is open to trusting his surroundings. Hershey will need a secure physically fenced yard, as he will need to immediately have a safe place to go potty. In time, his family can work on leash training, but it isn’t going to happen any time soon. He is a very good boy that doesn’t need to be crated & is always on his best behavior when his foster family is gone. They leave him in a pet-proofed area of the home until they return. He is not completely potty trained but is learning. Belly bands are a good tool that his foster mom uses & his new family could use, too. Hershey needs a low-key family that will allow him to bloom. If his family has another furry friend of similar size, it would be a plus, but is not mandatory. He enjoys being able to be in the same room as his family at night, with his four-legged friends. You must live within 350 miles from Maryville, IL & able to drive for a meet and greet. Licorice is one of our longest foster residents. We have taken a significant amount of time letting him acclimate to understanding being a pet & living in a home. He spent his younger days being a stud for a breeder, but now every day is leisure & playing with friends. His foster mom has reported a bit on his personality. He loves having furry friends of similar size in the home. We will require him to have canine friends, as he really looks to them for training & social cues. A secure physical fence will be required. Leash & harness training is not on the agenda. He doesn’t need a big yard; he just needs ample space to get some sunrays & do his potty business. His ideal home would be low-key and quiet. Licorice is going to be a hanging-out pal, not an activities partner. So, an active family would not be a good match. He is still quite fearful of hands but will let you pick him up to hold him. He prefers to lay near you rather than on you. He is working on his potty-training routine; his foster mom says that the best plan right now is to continue letting him wear a belly band in the house. That alleviates quite a bit of stress for the humans & for Licorice. He has settled into the routine of his foster home quickly. He likes to be praised & responds well to words of affirmation. Anytime there is a change in their routine, dogs need a moment to adjust. Licorice is no different, but being the smart little dog he is, we think he will catch on quickly. Please let us know if you think your family is just the home he needs!

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel DOB 06/21/18 (5yo) 20lbs Spayed / Microchipped UTD on vaccinations & Heartworm Preventative Please read the bio in its ENTIRETY. If you meet the requirements, please send an email to gateway4paws@gmail.com for additional information. Applications can be found on our website. Since we are 100% foster-based rescue, only approved applications will be reviewed and/or contacted. We do not allow shipping & do not transport. You must live within 350 miles from Maryville, IL & able to drive there for a meet & greet. We are looking for a home for Jolene that will offer her lots of company. She now knows that having friends is one of the best things about this new life she's been offered. Jolene is a great car rider. Automobile safety is important, so Jolene wears a harness that can be secured into a seatbelt lead. She loves to go on rides & sight see! Jolene will bolt out the door, we recommend that her new family have a plan in place to keep the front door secure, either with an xpen or baby gate. We have many families that do this to keep their pups safe, please ask us if you need help getting a plan in place. Jolene is not very good on a leash yet. If you work with her, she will likely be pretty good after some practice. Jolene hasn't had much opportunity to enjoy outdoor weather, so we aren't sure if she plans to run around the yard much. But knowing that she won't leash walk right now, we must insist on a physically secure fence for her, as she will need to immediately start her outside potty routine. The only way to be successful with this is to have a secure contained area. Jolene is 95% housetrained. Her foster mom has been very proud of her progress & says she is almost there! It is important to note that anytime there is a change in environment or schedule, you must give the dog a chance to be successful. A new routine that employs consistency & praise will help set them up for success. Jolene is a loyal friend. She quickly took up with her foster mom & follows her around like a little shadow. She absolutely loves company! She loves children, adults, men, women, all her foster canine siblings. She is very much enjoying making friends. Please let us know if you have the perfect home to offer Jolene by sending us an email. Gateway4paws@gmail.com
