His favorite things in the world are playing fetch or frisbee, and when he’s done working hard, he wants nothing more than to crawl completely under the covers and snuggle right up next to you in bed. Because of his breed/background, he is a true working/task dog. He has a lot of engine and does best when he has a "job" or is kept busy. He does have some anxiety, which means his ideal forever home looks a specific way: No kids or other animals: He needs to be the center of your universe and feels safest as an only pet. A yard to run in: A fenced area where he can sprint after his frisbee is a must. Someone who is home a lot: He thrives with a handler who is around to play, train, and keep his mind engaged. He simply loves his people and wants to be close to them. With patience, consistency, and lots of love, he'll continue to build confidence.

Story

Winnie is the sweetest cuddlest dog I've ever had. His number one want is attention and the closer to you he can be the better. I have haf him since he was only a few days old. He was found with his mom who had just given birth and a family member has his mom so I can show you pictures of her. he is a mix between a American Fox hound and German long-haired pointer. The last three years he has been in Illinois on a farm (living inside as well) and he loves running around and playing but we had to move to Florida for family reasons and it is just not fair for him to not have the yard that has been used to and able to run around. I would say his favorite things are a comfy place to relax and lots of human attention, he likes bones over toys and deer antlers and loves getting his energy out a few times a day. He is great with kids has lived with three other dogs his whole life I have had chickens and he was ok with them besides barking at them. He loves going for walks and ok in the car.

Story

Ben is a 140-pound gentle giant who will turn 9 in August. He is a loving, affectionate, people-oriented dog who thrives on companionship and being part of a family. I adopted him when he was about one year old, and he has spent nearly seven years with my family, growing up alongside two older large-breed dogs, including a Great Dane to whom he was especially attached. Over the past two years, both of his longtime canine companions passed away due to old age. After the loss of his closest companion, his behavior changed, and he began excessive licking and grooming that resulted in an open wound on his right hind leg. The wound has been difficult to heal because he continues to lick the area when unsupervised. Ben is not being rehomed because of aggression or behavioral problems. He would do best in a home with more companionship, attention and ideally other friendly dogs. He will come with his favorite futon mattress and toys. Ben is due for his annual vaccinations and rabies booster.

We do not allow shipping & do not transport. You must live within 350 miles from Maryville, IL & able to drive to that area for a meet and greet. We are a 100% foster-based rescue. Applications & FAQ about our adoption process can be found on our website. Opie came to rescue after he was surrendered to a local animal shelter. The shelter knew the best thing for him was to get him into a foster-based rescue to benefit his emotional health. Little dogs like Opie can deteriorate quickly in a shelter-type setting. This was definitely the best decision for Opie, and we are so thankful to the shelter for reaching out. Opie's foster mom sent us a very detailed report on the Big Personality that occupies his tiny 9-pound body! "If Opie wants to get to something he will eventually figure out how to get there. ⁃ Table surfer, a new trick he’s started in the last week. He wants what everyone else has, human or dog. Needs to be fed separately or he will eat their food. Do not leave food on a counter or ground unless you intend for him to eat it! ⁃ Escape artist, no dog gate has been able to beat him if his people are on the other side. ⁃ Needs a secure fence for sure, likes to “test” the gates and under fence areas every time he’s outside. We have rabbit fencing below our privacy fence which prevents him from going under, but need to stay vigilant with him outside. Never EVER leave him unattended outside. ⁃ Wants to be right by his people all the time. I think he would not do well left for long stretches of time, especially if he was the only dog. He becomes anxious pretty quickly and will probably start becoming destructive. He hasn’t been left alone much while he is with us other than his kennel at bedtime. When he is separated from people he is usually trying to beat the baby gate, using furniture and also literally scaling the baby gate. He could benefit with having other dogs in the house who wish to interact with him, my old man dog doesn’t “play” and Opie could do well with a playful pet friend. ⁃ 99% potty trained, still marking prior to neuter surgery. No marking or accidents in the house so far after surgery. He does not like to go in his house or kennel and will let you know when he needs to go outside. Keeps his area clean. ⁃ Plays “fetch and destroy” with his squeaky stuffed animal platypus but does not go for the rope toy despite my 10yo-old's best efforts. (probably for the best considering rope toys are a bowel obstruction danger!) ⁃ I think the oversized pet pouch hoodies were created for pups like Opie, who are most content being swaddled and carried around by their people. He loves to be held like a baby over the shoulder so he can see what’s going on and snugglein. ⁃ he will “sing” softly with you if you whistle with him ⁃ He barks when people come in to alert you but stops shortly and doesn’t bark much otherwise. " Opie is walking on a leash and continues to get better at it. He wears a very safe & secure harness when walking. 🏡 What Opie Needs in His Forever Home: 🐾 A family that will extend the time needed for Opie to get used to a new home. 3-3-3 Rule. 🐾 Opportunities for continued training. 🐾 Opie does well with other dogs and enjoys their company. We will pursue a home where he has a constant comanion. 🐾 A family willing to invite Opie to all the activities & include him.
