Meet Hank! He was found stray with a VERY tight collar on that didn’t even have enough give to be removed, it was cut off. He had been jumping in peoples car trying to get someone to save him and his old dog buddy and when I was sent the video of that, my heart broke for him! He’s doing very well at the rescue and is able to be out in the main yard as he’s great with all people and other dogs. It’s clear that he used to be someone’s dog as he has good manners and may even be house trained. Pat and her siblings were born in late January to a mixed breed mommy. Daddy was a ‘traveling man’ who we suspect was a handsome stranger who took no responsibility whatsoever for his actions. The first impression the puppies give is lab cross and they have little webbed toes for swimming and their coats are very lab-like. Everyone in the litter has a lovely white blaze on their chest which is typical of border collies, and the petfinder breed identifier says Patterdale Terrier, so that is what we are going with. DNA testing on dogs from the area often have 20 or more breeds and invariably have some German Shepherd, some herding dog and, surprisingly, many have a wee bit of Chihuahua. The puppy’s family kept the mom and PUP will pay for her to be spayed. They surrendered the puppies because they were living outside and an eagle was lurking about making the puppy’s situation precarious at best. Pat is black, white and brindle. She is crated at night and 4-5 hours during the work day. She is used to going outside to potty but she is not yet fully housebroken. She is playful and has an average energy level. She is by far the smallest of the litter and we expect her to be a mid-sized dog when she is fully grown, but her adopter should be prepared to love her if she is a bit larger or smaller than predicted. The early months are when puppy learns the social skills needed to be a skilled dog in dealing with other dogs and a good citizen in the human world. Adopters should be committed to getting puppy into lots of new and different human social situations, hearing vacuums, trucks, and rattling garbage cans, meeting people who are clapping, laughing, with hats, tools, bikes and skate boards. AND puppy needs many opportunities to meet and greet dogs of all shapes, sizes and dispositions. Just sharing a home with another dog is not as much doggie socializing as puppy needs. If good canine social skills are not learned and maintained during these early months, it will be very difficult to ever master them. Puppy play dates, trips to the pet store, puppy socialization classes and later, obedience classes are particularly important. If all this doggie time and involvement seems like a good idea, you are up for a puppy! As always, a tired dog is a good dog. Pat has been vaccinated and wormed. She will need two more routine vaccination plus rabies at the owner’s expense. The $375 adoption fee (check or cash) includes the cost of pup’s required spay/neuter at 6 months of age provided it is done by the PUP vet. We do place puppies outside the metro area but a plan for the required spay/neuter must be in place. We do not ship. He's friendly towards people, and very food motivated. He's a senior dog who knows what he wants and will communicate it. He's had to navigate some health challenges and can be a bit stubborn or crabby about being unable to do what he wants. Buddy would do best as the only pet in a quiet home, with someone who wants a loyal companion for daily walks, and time together. Let's get the obvious out of the way first...if you adopt me, you not only get a super snuggly pup but also my amazing chariot. Sometimes my foster mom will boost me up on the sofa for even better snuggling & then I'm in heaven! I keep her company and take my afternoon nap close by in her office. I love to hang out on our deck in good weather and I love my 'up time' in my chariot when I run around the backyard, play with the other pups, chase balls or play tug of war. If I can get out of the house & yard, I am a very happy girl! I love going for walks and love, love, love car rides! If you are a runner or a biker, I'm a bit of a speed demon in my chariot and can keep up with you if you want some company on your walk or ride! And I love my toys...I have a set of four, including my favorite Hamburger that go out on the deck with me and then keep my company when I go to bed. Once a week, my foster mom gets me a delicious bone! If I have that or the chew toys, I don't chew on things I shouldn't! So some other things you need to know about me & my chariot: I stay quietly in my room overnight and in the morning my foster mom helps hold me up so I can pee on a puppy pad. I can't poop while she's holding me, so I have one spot in the house I tend to head to do that business if I can't get outside. Foster mom says it's really easy to clean up...very contained & solid. In the house, I tend to not use my chariot & just scoot. While diapers work if I'm in the chariot, they don't stay on well when I scoot. If I want you to come pet me, I may give a bark or two...its easier to get you to come than to have to scoot too far. I will also help let you know if someone is at the door. While I love my foster dad, I am initially more comfortable with women. Maybe because one of them shot me, men need to go slowly to make me know I can trust them. I'm learning to be a bit less nervous about some loud things like motorcycles, lawn mowers, & fireworks, although I feel pretty safe in the house now...they worry me more outside. My foster mom wanted to add this: Goldie has some exercises she can do that will continue to help strengthen her legs, but it isn't clear how much more improvement she will make But Goldie is the sweetest thing in the house and if you sit on the floor, she'll climb in your lap for all the pets & snuggles she can get. I arrived at Secondhand Hounds with a bullet wound that resulted in a spine injury and bilateral hip dysplasia. This injury has prevented me from being able to use my back limbs (nonambulatory paraparesis). I have been working with a physical therapist and I received x-rays during my care with the SHH vet team. It is important for my future adopters to know that there is a risk for my hip joint to become dislocated . Since I am not walking on my rear limbs this may never be a concern but depending on the weight that is placed on my rear limbs this is a possibility. My future adopter will be financially responsible for possible future orthopedic surgery or medical management needs.

Arrow is now at his ideal weight, looking handsome and athletic with a shiny, healthy coat. He’s gained a lot of confidence in his place in the pack and enjoys wrestling with his Weim foster brother. Arrow is a German Shorthaired Pointer and he’s about 2 years old and 60 pounds. Arrow is a large, athletic dog. His long legs give him natural running ability, and with continued practice he will make an amazing running buddy. He regularly does 8-12 milers with us, and does need a few reminders to stay focused but it’s steadily improving. He also loves walks - we do two kinds of walks. One we call “sniff walks” on a long lead where Arrow can follow his nose. The other is just about exercise business and he walks really effectively on a half hitch to curtail the pulling. Arrow needs these outlets - both mental and physical - to be his best self. Arrow is doing well on sit and getting better at come. We are also working on “place”, which we think is important to peace at the dinner table, as Arrows head is effectively table level. He’s completely house trained and crate trained. He’s a handsome athlete and will be successful with a family who can commit to giving him the physical and mental outlets GSPs need to be good dogs. Petfinder lists our pets as 'Out of Town' pets at other locations, and Adopt-a-Pet lists our location as a Transport stop. **Apple will be attending out puppy palooza adoption event on 4/27 at Luther Westside Volkswagon. If you are interested in meeting/adopting any of these puppies, please complete the preadopt application first** Name: Apple Breeds: Golden Retriever/ Lab Mix Age: Puppy Sex: Female Size: Large when fully grown Apple is the cutest little girl born on 2/26. Her mom is a Golden Retriever, her dad reported to be a Lab/ Shepherd mix. She is expected to be a large dog as an adult. He is a typical puppy so a forever home should prepare for all the puppy fun, socialization, training, and everything takes to make a puppy into the best dog they can be. We highly recommend training classes to set everyone up for success. Housetraining and cratetraining have been started but expect to continue working on it. Puppies can hold their bladders on average for 1 hour more than their age in months (ex: 2 month old puppy should be able to hold it about 3 hours). Puppies play hard, sleep hard, and love hard. The puppy stage can be tough but so worth it Requirements: Training sign up recommended Adoption Fee: $600 + tax. This includes neuter/spay, current vaccinations as age appropriate, heartworm/tick testing in dogs over 8 months of age, deworming, microchip and current Heartgard and Nexgard preventatives.
