Story
Meet Lucas – The Husky Who's Been Waiting Far Too Long. Some dogs impress you with tricks. Some dogs impress you with energy. Lucas does something different. He looks at you. The very first thing that captured my heart wasn't that he's handsome (although he absolutely is). It was his eyes. Those incredible icy blue-white Husky eyes seem to look straight through you, as if they're quietly reading every corner of your heart. And when you let yourself get lost in them, you discover something unexpected: an ocean of honesty, gentleness, and unconditional love... and a promise that if you choose him, he'll be your friend for life. Lucas has become one of our staff and volunteer favorites, and it's easy to understand why. He walks beautifully on a leash. During our park adventures on a long line, his Husky spirit comes alive. He happily scouts ahead, making sure every squirrel—and every dog or cat in the distance—knows he's watching over his human. But once we're back on the sidewalk with a shorter leash, he settles beside me, walking like we've been best friends forever, simply enjoying each other's company. Lucas is affectionate in every sense of the word. He'll happily climb into your lap if you let him, roll over for endless belly rubs, and melt for a tasty treat. He knows "Sit" and "Down," loves playing fetch, gets along well with other dogs, and would thrive with a playful canine companion. He's smart, eager to learn, calm around people, and although he's officially three years old, he still has that joyful teenage personality that reminds you life is meant to be fun. He would be wonderful for first-time dog owners, a single person looking for a loyal best friend, or a busy family searching for a dog who wants to be involved in every adventure. Like every Siberian Husky, Lucas wasn't meant to spend his life behind kennel walls. Huskies are symbols of freedom, adventure, and purpose. They were bred to run, to work, to explore the world alongside their people. Yet Lucas has now spent more than a year in our municipal shelter. That's more than 365 days waking up in a kennel. Our staff keeps the kennels spotless. Volunteers spend time loving him every day. He is cared for deeply. But no matter how much we love him... ...it's still a kennel. Lucas doesn't need another day of visitors saying, "What a beautiful dog," before walking away. He needs someone to say, "Let's go home." Summer is our busiest season, and municipal shelters become dangerously full. Dogs like Lucas desperately need families willing to adopt—or even foster. Opening your home, even temporarily, gives a wonderful dog another chance while creating space for another life to be saved. If you've been looking for a loyal adventure partner, a hiking buddy, a fetch champion, a couch companion after a long day, and a friend who will love you with his whole heart... Lucas has been waiting for you. Please come meet him. He may just spend the rest of his life proving that the wait was worth it. Lucas is available for adoption or foster at Upland Animal Shelter. Highlights: • Walks beautifully on leash • Affectionate lap dog • Belly rub enthusiast • Loves fetch • Social butterfly • Great with other dogs (would love a playful dog companion) • Knows Sit and Down • Smart and treat motivated • Calm, loving personality • Great for first-time dog owners • Perfect for an active home • Not good with cats

Story
BENNY: THE BRAD PITT OF THE SHELTER LOOKING FOR HIS HAPPY ENDING. We all think our own dogs are the most beautiful dogs in the world. But with Benny, even people who have never met him seem to agree. The other day, I was walking Benny in the park when a lady stopped us and said, "My goodness! That's a beautiful dog! He is a Hollywood dog!" And honestly? She wasn't wrong. Benny is the Brad Pitt of our shelter. That striking mix of Siberian Husky and what we believe may be German Shepherd gives him movie-star looks. He's the kind of dog people turn around to look at twice. But Benny is so much more than a handsome face. He has one of those personalities that just feels balanced. He's incredibly affectionate and loves giving kisses, leaning into belly rubs, and curling up close to his people. Yes, this 73-pound boy truly believes he is a lap dog. At the same time, Benny has an independent spirit. He loves exploring, rolling in the grass, carrying his toys around, and simply enjoying the world around him. I can easily picture him resting his head in your lap one moment and then happily napping at your feet the next. Benny loves toys and absolutely loves playing fetch. In fact, he's developed his own system: he likes to have two toys and will trade one for another. Otherwise, he'll happily keep his ball for himself. It's part of his charm. He's also a smart boy who already knows sit, down, and paw, walks nicely on leash, and is very treat motivated, which makes him a wonderful candidate for continued training. Like many Huskies, squirrels, cats, and crows are simply too tempting to ignore, so he'll need someone attentive on walks. Benny is best suited for an active home with a securely fenced yard where he can play, explore, and be his wonderful, goofy self. Because of his size and enthusiasm, we think he would do best with children ages 13 and older. Sometimes when he's feeling extra playful, he may get a little humpy, but a gentle "Nope" and he immediately redirects. He has not been formally tested with other dogs and would likely do best as the only dog in the home. He should not live with cats or small pets. What makes Benny's story especially difficult is this: He has been waiting in our municipal shelter for eleven months. Eleven months of watching people walk by. Eleven months of being everyone's favorite during meet-and-greets, only to hear the same thing at the end: "He's so big." And yes, Benny is a big dog. Big dogs come with big responsibilities. But they also come with big hearts, big loyalty, and big love. If you've been looking for a large, intelligent, affectionate working-breed dog who can be both your cuddle buddy and your adventure partner, Benny may be exactly who you've been waiting for. Municipal shelters become dangerously crowded during the summer months. More than anything, Benny needs a chance. An adopter would be wonderful. Even a foster family would be incredible: a place where this Hollywood handsome boy could finally stretch out on a couch, chase a ball, get his belly rubbed, and happily wait for his forever family. Benny has already mastered being a shelter favorite. Now he just needs the starring role in someone's life.

Story
Here’s a website-friendly version with plenty of emojis: 🐾 Meet Max! 🐾 ❤️ Max is a 5-year-old Shepherd looking for a family to call his own. This sweet boy is all about love, loyalty, and being close to his favorite people. 🏡 House Manners? He’s Got Them! ✅ Potty trained ✅ Respectful in the home ✅ Greets guests politely ✅ Walks nicely on leash with a Gentle Leader 🧠 Smart Pup 🐾 Knows “Sit” 🤝 Knows “Shake” 🐕 Social Side 💙 Has done well with other dogs in foster care 👦 Has been gentle with a 4-year-old child 🥰 Max’s favorite thing in the world is spending time with his people. He loves affection, reassurance, and simply being by your side. Because of this, he would do best with someone who is home often or can include him in their daily activities. 🌱 When Max first arrived in foster care, he needed time to adjust and gain confidence. He came from the shelter underweight and wasn’t interested in eating at first. With patience and love, he blossomed into the wonderful companion he is today. His future family should be prepared to give him time to settle in and feel safe. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Max may do best with older children since he doesn’t always realize how big he is and could accidentally knock over smaller kids during moments of excitement. ⭐ If you’re looking for a loyal best friend who will reward your patience with endless love and devotion, Max is waiting to meet you! 🐾 IEPA-A-18834 🖤 Male Shepherd 🎂 5 Years Old 🏠 Currently in Foster Care

Story
Meet Zoe, a sweet, three-year-old black pug who’s looking for her forever home. Zoe was a brave little survivor, found on the streets with a litter of pups. After being spayed, she’s healthy and full of love to give. Zoe is affectionate, playful, and adores people—but she would thrive best as the only pet in a calm, dedicated home. She just needs a patient family who can help her feel safe and cherished. If you have a peaceful, pet-free home and a big heart, Zoe might be your perfect match.Zoe is food and toy possessive, so she would do best in a home where she’s the only pet. She potty trained and does great on walks and meeting other dogs.
