Story
Riley is a very loving and playful dog. He is very smart, easily trained, and thrives when he has open space and a job to do. He is highly active and food motivated. We have a baby and no longer have the ability to keep him as active as he would like. He does have bouts of anxiety but he does well in his crate and well when he is at home by himself.

Story
Ever heard of a sweet Tater Tot? Well, let me introduce you to one! Tater Tot is the sweetest, friendliest, happiest little boy ever!! I mean, just look at that smile! And you can probably tell by that telltale cinnamon bun tail, he’s part Pug. Not sure what the other part is, but more than likely Beagle. Whatever Tater may be made up of, he is 100% adorable and his eyeliner game is on point! Here’s what he has to say for himself (duh, of course he talks). “Hi I’m Tater Tot, and I’m quirky! I’m not like a regular quirky, I’m a cool quirky, or at least that’s what they keep telling me 😄 Personally, I just think it makes me all the more endearing 🥰 I’m not really sure what made me this way – maybe it’s just my age, I am only 1½ after all – but I do know that I am so much happier after leaving TX and getting to come to CO. And speaking of happy, I’m a pretty easy guy to please. I just need 2 naps, a good amount of chewing, playing (inside and outside), snuggling, and 2 or 3 short little walks every day, and I’ll be the happiest little Tot ever! Sometimes I get a little too happy and excited when I get overstimulated. And I am working very hard on learning how to keep that all in check. My foster mom tells me all the time how smart I am and how quickly I learn things, but sometimes it’s really difficult. Like when I go outside, especially for walks……can you blame me though? Have you seen what’s out there? Outside is the best and I want to get to wherever we’re going as fast as I can! There’s so many interesting things to see, hear, sniff, and yes, sometimes try to eat (my least cool quirk, by far 🫤). If I do try and eat something I’m not supposed to, I’m asked to drop it and then am given a delicious treat when I do. I love when that happens! If I don’t listen, then I don’t get a treat and we have to go inside. I don’t like it when that happens. But not as much as I don’t like being scolded or yelled at. That makes me very sad and scared. I am all about the positive reinforcement and redirection!! Now for the basics, I am fully potty trained, sleep wonderfully in my crate at night, I’m not able to free roam unsupervised yet, but hopefully that will come with time and training, and I love all dogs and people. In fact, I would really love to have my very own doggie sibling to play with and help me learn the ways of the doggie world. I will thrive in a calm and structured home environment, with a family that is around most of the time. I love spending time with my people and want them to be an active part of my life. Oh, and I definitely need a fenced-in yard, there’s nothing better than running around without a harness and leash! If you think I might be a good fit for your family, I would really love to meet you!” Tater Tot is in foster in Westminster, Colorado. *We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs. * You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/tater-tot-2/. Story
Hi! I’m Mongo! Many of you have probably heard of me already, I’m kind of a big deal. I came to CO and was surrendered to a shelter here when I was 3 months old because it was believed that I had something called Mega E. This made me throw up, a lot…. The shelter people tried really hard to find a rescue for me because the pound was no place for me. A nice lady saw my story and how happy I was in my puppy video and she agreed to foster me! So, I joined MHCR and my journey began. I went to see so many doctors to try and figure out what my exact problems were. I ate in a special chair and took lots of medicine. Finally, the smart folks at CSU figured out I had a very rare condition called Lower Esophageal Achalasia. That means that food had a hard time going into my stomach after I ate so my esophagus got really big and would cause me to regurgitate my food. We had huge plans to try an experimental procedure with Botox to help my problem and if it worked, a very famous surgeon was going to perform a super special surgery on me. True to form, my body had other plans. One day I got really, really sick and my foster mom knew something wasn’t right. When I got to the emergency room, they found out my stomach AND my spleen (don’t ask me what that even is) were INSIDE my esophagus! The super famous surgeon agreed to stay late, put my guts back together, AND do the special surgery on me. I’m so glad he did! Lots of nice people donated to help pay for my surgery. I’m very lucky the community was rooting for me. It took me a long time to recover. I had to eat through a tube in my stomach and I couldn’t play with my foster siblings. BUT, that’s all in the past. Now that I’m 6 months old, I’m healed and can run and play. I still eat my food in a special chair but I’m very good at it and often take a short nap in it afterwards. I eat plain dog food and I drink plain water from elevated bowls. We can’t say for sure, but it looks like one day I can probably eat standing up like a normal dog, too! Well, there’s a whole lot about me. But, let me tell you some of the super fantastic things about me, too. Everyone loves me and I love everyone. Dogs, adults, kids, they’re all for me and I’m for them. I’d love a home where I get plenty of attention and exercise. I’m a pure bred Labrador, after all. I don’t really like my crate. If I’m in it, I get a little anxious sometimes and that makes me regurgitate a little bit (don’t worry, it’s not that much). I do much better when I can hang out in the kitchen or somewhere with my canine foster siblings. I hope you’ll take a chance on me. I know it’s scary for people to hear about my past, just imagine living through it! I promise to be a good boy and taking care of me really isn’t that different than taking care of a normal dog! Story
We’d love to introduce you to Steve! Steve recently joined MHCR as a transfer from a shelter in Southern Colorado. He was a man that needed a plan as the rescue he was with was closing down. Steve had been with them since the summer of 2023. It was clear he was another victim of black dog syndrome, a crazy phenomenon wherein black dogs wait in shelters waaaaaaaaay longer than other dogs. Steve’s new foster mom is a sucker for the underdog, so she cleared a spot special for him. What we’ve learned is Steve is pretty sensational! He LOVES to play and wrestle with his foster siblings. He does well with the teenager in the home and he has pretty nice house manners! Steve is 2 years old and approximately 60 lbs. Steve is in foster in Bennett, Colorado. *We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs. * You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/steve/. Story
Hiro is a 45 lbs, 7 year old, German Shepherd mix that lost his home (along with his two canine siblings) when his family moved and didn’t take them. Since coming to CO, Hiro joined a fun foster family with other dogs and kiddos. He’s in heaven! Hiro is adjusting well, but we think he would appreciate a more mature home. He’s active and adventurous and will do well with an active home and a fenced in yard. He’s house and crate trained. Hiro is in foster in Parker, Colorado. *We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs. * You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/hiro.
