Story
We rescued Daisy in Oklahoma 6 years ago. After doing a DNA test, we found out she is highly inbred, which likely explains a lot of her behavioral issues. Physically, she is only 12 pounds and in great shape, but behaviorally she has a lot of challenges. We have been working with an experienced trainer since moving to Colorado, and she has explained the effects of the inbreeding to us. Daisy does not know how to "turn off." She gets overstimulated very easily and gets stuck in patterns that she thinks is self-soothing but actually keeps overstimulating her (ex. Seeking physical affection then growling at the person petting her; growling/howling when she is with me and my partner moves around in another room of the house; licking things obsessively). After a lot of discussion, we believe she needs a one-person household with no other animals and a strict routine to thrive. She also needs a patient human who ideally can take her outdoors a lot as she loves to sniff and explore.

Story
Hershey is just a girl waiting in the world for someone to notice her! We picked this sweet girl off of a high-volume shelter’s dreaded ‘EU list.’ Hershey had already been extended for good behavior once, but they ran out of space and she found herself at risk again. That’s when it happened – someone noticed her. Now she’s here, in CO, awaiting her forever home. Hershey has an endearing sweet soul, big (ok huge) ears, a cute curly tail and little white ankle socks. She’s packed full of love for her humans and canine friends alike. Hershey gives hugs and loves all the snuggles. She takes treats nicely and is overall a quiet dog who rarely barks. She’s smart, attentive, agile, and fit. She walks decently on a leash, rides well in a car, is kennel trained, and sleeps through the night. She has been doing beautifully in the routine of a foster home and being around other dogs. Hershey is a healthy girl and is around 2 years old. She’s medium in stature and when she fills out should be 40-45 pounds at ideal weight. Hershey requests a fenced yard to accommodate her entertaining zoomies and a family that promises to never let her be hungry or forgotten again. In return, she promises to give them her whole heart in return. Hershey is being fostered in Fort Collins, Colorado. *We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs.* You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/hershey-2/. Story
"Some Wilburs capture hearts in storybooks. This Wilbur is hoping to capture your heart in real life. At just 1-2 years old and 15 pounds, Wilbur has already overcome more than most dogs ever should after being rescued from a hoarding situation. These days, he is discovering that life can be full of cozy beds, kind people, and yummy treats. He is still working on learning that human hands can be a source of love instead of something to fear. If you’ve ever had a soft spot for the quiet shy ones, this little guy is sure to steal your heart. Wilbur’s foster family says that he is the total package. He’s house-trained, free roam trustworthy when left home alone, and loves his daily walks. He’s also a smart boy who is great at settling into your routine. He is dog and cat friendly. He especially enjoys the company of other calm dogs and needs a canine companion who can help him continue building confidence. While Wilbur is a healthy young dog, he will need daily eye drops in one eye. The good news is that he is becoming a pro at his eye drop routine. All he needs now is a patient adult-only family willing to give him the time, love, and reassurance he’s always deserved. He will be ready to go home after 6/26." Wilbur is being fostered in Loveland, Colorado. *We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs.* You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/wilbur/. Story
Lovely Lucy is as sweet as they come. She may be a little shy when meeting new people, but behind those bright blue eyes is an affectionate, playful girl who simply wants to be won over by someone who is consistent and safe. We believe Lucy is an Australian Shepherd mix with a beautiful copper coat. She absolutely adores toys and likes to keep her favorites close by. She’s been taking notes from her foster brother, who has helped show her that life can be pretty wonderful. Every day she becomes a little braver, a little more curious, and a little more herself. Lucy is crate trained and having her own space helps her feel safe. She walks nicely on leash in quieter or familiar environments and is doing well with housetraining when kept on a consistent routine. Lucy is 1.5 years old and around 55 lbs. She would thrive in a calm home with people who understand that trust isn’t rushed—it’s earned. In return, you’ll get to watch a truly special dog blossom into the loyal companion she was always meant to be. Some dogs wear their hearts on their sleeves. Lucy keeps hers tucked away until she knows she’s safe. Once she does, it’s a beautiful thing to be part of. Lucy is in foster in Longmont, Colorado. *We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs. * You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/lucy/. Story
Meet the stunningly gorgeous Opal! At only 8 months old, she hasnt quite grown into her full Cane Corso stature, but she already embodies a true gentle giant. Her breed may look intimidating (shell likely be 90+ pounds as an adult), but shes got a soft, sweet temperament and endless snuggles to give. Opal loves her people and though she gets along with dogs of all sizes, she prefers to be where the humans are. Her current weight of 55 pounds doesnt exactly make for a perfect lap dog but dont tell her that, because your lap is exactly where she wants to be! Shes a low-key couch potato at her core, but enjoys morning and afternoon zoomies in the yard and unstuffing all toys with a squeaker. In her foster home, she has shared space with cats and chickens and while interested in both, she has responded well to gentle correction and would likely be able to live in harmony with them. Like many Cane Corsos, she can be a little slow to warm up with new people and places. Loud and/or unfamiliar noises startle her, and she appreciates patient humans who understand that trust is earned slowly. Once she is comfortable in her environment, her goofy and affectionate side shines through. Shes almost completely house trained, is working on her manners and basic commands, and does short walks on a leash beautifully. She can do short stints in her crate (and does sleep there at night) but shed prefer to be at your feet or on your bed! Opal is very agile and athletic and can easily jump over shorter fences, usually seeking out her humans, so a large, fenced (minimum 5) yard is a must. She would thrive in a calm home and has the potential to be an excellent office companion she requests a soft bed and chew toy to keep her occupied while you work! Adopters with large breed experience are preferred. Opal is in foster in Longmont, Colorado. *We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs. * You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/opal You can apply for our wonderful dogs at https://www.milehighcanine.org/adopt/adoption-application/.

Story
Adorable Lupin is a 7-month-old fellow from Amarillo, Texas. He had a bit of a rough start after being dumped in a field, but thankfully, he is in a safe place now, and is thriving. He has expressive eyes, the softest coat you’ve ever felt, and a goofy, uncoordinated, puppy body that is sure to make you laugh. While he may take a minute to warm up to new people and situations, Lupin is extremely kind and curious. Once he feels comfortable, he loves everyone he meets, human and canine alike. He especially loves kids, and just wants to play with them and get pets. Lupin loves to play with squeak toys, “dance” for his tennis ball, romp around in the yard, chew on bones, and wrestle with his foster sister. He is very food motivated, and has been learning commands like “sit” and “come.” He is crate trained, house trained, knows how to use the dog door at his foster home, and is getting pretty good at walking on a leash. He has abundant puppy energy, and is always game to go for a fun adventure, or take a long walk. When the adventure is over, you can find him curled up on the couch with his head on a throw pillow, like a person. 🙂 Lupin would love a home with a canine playmate, or some humans to help him continue to build his confidence and enjoy all life has to offer. This little guy has so much love to give, and we can’t wait for him to find his person. Lupin is being fostered in Denver, Colorado. *We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs.* You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/lupin/.
