History:
Tank has made several appearances at the shelter after escaping his backyard and having multiple nights on the town. He was eventually surrendered to us along with his two puppies, TJ and Nova, who are also available for adoption.
Personality:
Tank is a lovable, goofy Rottweiler with a huge heart and an even bigger personality. He absolutely adores people and loves attention, affection (especially butt scratches), and being included in whatever his humans are doing. He is confident, loyal, playful, and has the self-assured, unhurried demeanor you often see in a Rottweiler. He can be a total goofball and has a way of making you laugh with his larger-than-life personality.
Tank is smart but has had very little training, so he is still learning how to be a well-mannered companion. He can be boisterous and isn't shy about letting you know when he wants attention—or when he doesn't want to do something. He may bark loudly and demandingly, but there is nothing aggressive about it.
Behavior:
Tank's manners need work, and he will need an adopter who is confident, consistent, and willing to continue his training. He may jump on people (including kids) when excited, bark when he wants something, and be stubborn or resistant when he doesn't want to cooperate. Like many Rottweilers, he is an independent thinker and will do best with clear boundaries and guidance. Again, though his bark is loud, he has not shown any signs of aggression.
He currently knows "sit" (half the time!) but will need continued work on basic obedience. He also does not walk well on a leash yet and will need someone committed to teaching him how to walk politely. He is mostly house-trained, although his new family should expect some adjustment as he settles into a new environment.
Tank does not particularly enjoy being alone or confined and would much rather be with his people. He is young and energetic, so regular physical exercise, mental stimulation, and interaction will be important to keep him happy and out of trouble. Without enough activity or structure, he may become bored and find his own ways to entertain himself.
Tank appears interested in other dogs and may enjoy having a canine companion, but a proper meet-and-greet with any potential household dogs is recommended to make sure they are a good match.
Tank isn't looking for someone who expects a perfectly behaved dog right out of the kennel. He's looking for someone who sees his potential and is willing to put in the work. With patience, consistency, and dedicated training, Tank could grow into an absolutely wonderful companion.
Health:
Tank is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on his vaccinations.
Tank does have a medical concern that potential adopters should be aware of. Earlier in his life, he was hit by a car, and his injuries were never addressed. As a result, he has a painful left hip that he does not like touched. At this time, he is able to move around well, but the extent of the old injury and whether it could cause additional problems in the future are unknown. His hip may require further veterinary evaluation, and adopters should be prepared for the possibility of additional care.
And then there is the drool. Tank drools. A LOT. We're talking more drool than you might expect from even a giant-breed dog! If you're not prepared to occasionally wipe drool (and hair) off the walls, furniture, or yourself, Tank may not be your guy.
We understand Tank is a handsome and desirable breed, but Rottweilers are NOT for everyone. We recommend doing research on the breed if you have not owned one before. He is a happy, playful young dog with a lot of life and love to give. He has some manners to learn and some training to catch up on, but underneath all that boisterous energy is a sweet, goofy dog with the potential to be an incredible companion.
