Story
Riley 5 years old. Pit Terrier/Coonhound Mix Lovable Couch Potato! Meet Riley. My wife and I adopted Riley as a puppy in 2021 from a local rescue in Berkley MI. Snuggle bug and absolute couch potato. She is somewhat shy at first but once she warms up to you she will be your best friend. Riley is fully house/potty trained. Up to date on all shots and vaccinations and is very healthy. No medications or dietary needs. She is spayed. Also knows basic commands such as sit, down, and crate. She does not beg or counter surf. We have made the difficult decision to re-home Riley because she does not do well with small children. She is tolerable of our other dog, but overall we think she would do best in a child-free and pet-free home. Riley will thrive in a quieter environment with a fenced backyard as she loves to explore! While our hearts are broken to have to re-home her, we feel that this will be a positive move that will put her into a more comfortable environment.

Story
***Video of her can be seen on our Facebook page here and here.*** Athena is a sweet, playful young pit bull mix who was found running alone with no one coming to claim her. At just 1 year old, she’s still discovering the world — and she does it all with her stunning mismatched eyes, one blue and one green. She loves playing with other dogs and has all the makings of a wonderful companion. When she first arrived, Athena was scared of everything — the loud shelter, new people, passing cars, even the wind. With patient volunteer support, she’s learning she’s safe, and her sassy, silly side is starting to shine. She’s not a fan of the cold and will snort her displeasure before running back to warmth, but she’s also incredibly affectionate. Sit on the ground with her, and she’ll climb right into your arms. Athena is still figuring out how to trust and feel secure, and she needs a home willing to guide her with patience and kindness. With the right person, she’ll blossom into the loving, loyal companion she’s meant to be. IS THIS DOG SAFE WITH CATS? There is almost always an acclimation period when a new pet joins the household. We are happy to suggest a few ways to ease the transition. If one of our dogs is reported to have lived with cats previously, that will be indicated in the dog's description! IS THIS DOG GOOD WITH OTHER DOGS? No dog loves every other dog, just as humans do not like every other human they meet. A proper introduction (meet and greet) would be required as part of our application process. IS THIS DOG GOOD WITH CHILDREN? The better question is how the children have been taught to handle animals. A dog will respond negatively if he/she is not being handled properly. We can offer suggestions on how to teach children to interact with dogs and pay attention to body language. Young children should never be left unsupervised with new dogs. WHY IS THIS DOG IN THE SHELTER? The top reasons dogs are given up are: Moving without considering the needs of the pets Death of the owner with no plan in place for the pets Previous owner did not provide appropriate training Owner did not consider the lifespan of a dog Owner did not consider the cost of providing for a dog

Story
Freddy will be a year old in August and was my mother-in-law's dog when he was a very small puppy. She wanted a companion because she is an elderly woman with an empty nest. However cute he may be, she did not realize how much work and how large an Australian shepherd would become. When caring for him became too much for her, we took him into our home to foster until he could find another family. Freddy is a very energetic and loving dog who truly needs someone or a partnership that can give him more time and attention—something our large, busy family cannot provide. We would really like to find Freddy a new home. He is a good dog; he's smart, protective, and capable of learning commands but needs a family that works well with his kind of breed. He needs someone who can dedicate time to training and maybe even provide him with a job to keep his active mind satisfied. Please reach out if you can give him a new home.

Story
***Video of him can be seen on our Facebook page here, here, and here.*** Snow has been in our care for over six months, after coming in at the end of July running loose and severely malnourished. A long court case meant we had to hold him for five months, but that chapter is finally closed — and Snow is ready for his fresh start. At about 2 years old, he’s a sweet‑natured husky mix with a calm, gentle energy. He knows “sit,” loves rolling in the grass, and melts for ear scratches. There’s a quiet softness to him — a gratitude that shows as he learns to trust again. Snow will thrive in an active home with daily walks, outdoor adventures, and patient confidence‑building. He blossoms with consistency and kindness. We recommend Snow join a home with at least one other dog he can bond with to help build his confidence. Snow is ready for love, stability, and a real chance at happiness. He just needs someone to choose him.
