They call me the Little Beagle with a Big Heart! Hey there! I'm Shadow, the irresistible 3-year-old beagle on a quest to find my forever home. Now, let me tell you why you should pick me as your new furry companion! First things first, let's talk about my charm. I've got a tail-wagging personality that'll light up your life faster than you can say "treats, please!" With a wagging tail and a nose ready for adventure, I'm always up for some fun. Now, let's address the elephant in the room (or should I say, the beagle in the shelter?). Yep, I was an owner surrender because my family was moving and they didn't allow pets in the new location but don't you worry! I've got nothing but love to give to my new family. I'm like a sponge, ready to soak up all the affection and attention you can give. Did someone say "walk"? Oh boy, count me in! I'm a beagle on a mission when it comes to exploring the great outdoors. Whether it's a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood or a hike through the woods, I'm your paw-fect companion. And let's not forget my social skills! I'm as friendly as they come, both with people and other furry friends. Playdates at the dog park? Yes, please! I'll charm the socks off every pup and human I meet. So, what do you say? Ready to add a little Shadow to your life? Trust me, once you meet me, you won't be able to resist my beagle charm. Let's make memories together – one wagging tail at a time! If interested, please call the shelter at 231-861-5395 and leave a message to be placed on this dog's adoption list. No obligation, but it reserves your place in line on the list. The shelter will contact individuals as they appear on the list. Ask about adoption transportation assistance if you do not live in the local area. The adoption fee is $95 and you receive certificates for $50 towards spay/neuter and $10 towards rabies vaccine if not already done. All dogs are heartworm tested, receive a DHLPP, flea and tick treatment, a bordetella vaccination and are dewormed.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Here is his bio: Rex is a lover and teddy bear. He finds his one human and follows that person around all day. He likes to run around the backyard, nap on the softest blankets, and get belly rubs. He is discovering his love for toys and will play by himself with them. Rex is still working on not marking in the house, begging, and jumping on the counter for food. Also, Rex will need a secure yard and be watched when he is outside as he is a digger and a jumper. Rex is best suited for a home with other dogs as he has separation anxiety, a home that can give him the love and attention he deserves, and place to call his furever!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.All animal breeds and ages are a best estimate May 1, 2024, 11:47 am

Story
Hi, my name is Charley Too, but those who know me best call me Hugo or baby Huey. It’s a long story that I am happy to share over a snuggle on the couch sometime. I have been bounced around to a couple of homes because I have a lot of energy and I am still really young and learning. My first home did not do much training with me and I got a rap of being a “naughty” boy, but I really am a good boy and I like hearing the word: “yes” because I know that I will get a treat! Speaking of learning; I am very smart, and I love food! I am really curious as well. That makes me really easy to train. Since I have been at my foster home, I have been learning lots of new skills and I enjoy the kibble I get for learning them. My foster mom says I loose-leash walk like a champ and I rarely pull, not like my rotten foster brother. I’m kidding about the rotten part; I really like other dogs and I pick up cues from them very quickly. I like having another dog around to help teach me, I was alone in my previous homes and didn’t get much training or help in learning how to be a companion. I am good at: sit, down, touch, and I am learning consensual care skills to help me be a better dog while being groomed or cared for by a vet. For a smart young boy like me who is very eager to learn, training every day for 15 minutes is necessary to allow me to settle and grow into the best beagle you have ever had; it helps me to focus and gives me confidence when I hear “yes” and “good boy” because I know I am loved. My foster mom carries a pouch of kibble and we practice loose leash check in and touch while we walk; I love that time. I like stuffed toys, playing fetch, and chew bones (especially antlers). I will try to play with my foster brother but I can play hard and he gets tired quick and quits. I am learning when he quits to settle down and play on my own. I have played with really big dogs (130#) well too. I love having a canine companion and while I am confident around other dogs; I am not a dominant dog in personality. I do not get mad when another dog drinks from the same bowl as me or tries to eat my food while I am eating, but I do eat better when I am in my crate so I feel safe and can eat without feeling like I have to eat super-fast. I am very good at housetraining and have only had accidents while my foster mom and I figured out how to communicate that I need to go. I stay in a crate during the day without fuss; although I do need a small bribe of a peanut butter Kong and a small treat to go in there. I was bad about going in a crate until I learned that crate games could yield me tasty treats! I am a little fussy in my crate at night, but that is mostly because I really want to cuddle and sleep with my family. Sometimes my foster mom will wake me up if it is close to alarm and take me to cuddle on the couch. That is the best in the world! I snuggle in close under the blanket and sleep like a rock until breakfast. That is really a happy place, and I would love to be able to snuggle at night. I ride good in a car, I really like to rest my chin in between the two front seats and be close to people. Sometimes I will just curl up in the back and sleep if that is more comfortable. Do not let my size and shape fool you; I am athletic and can run and jump really good! I try to mind the baby gates at home, but sometimes I jump them to get to the toys in the other room (my foster brother taught me how to do that so it must be okay). I would like someone rescue experienced to help me continue to grow into a calm and confident adult. Someone who can remember that while I look full grown that I am only 8-10 months old and still very much a puppy. I would like a home with minimal alone time and a dog to cuddle with and play with. It’s very important that my new family spends time with me every day on reinforcement training and understands that I do best when I have choices. I am finishing some training and will be available mid-May. NOTE: Dog may be located in any of our six volunteer states (WI, IL, IN, OH, PA, MI). Please read our Standards for Adoption and the information about beagles and puppies before you submit an adoption application. Remember that owning a puppy is a full-time commitment and you must have the time to commit to a dog that will be with you for 12-17 years. Beagle puppies are cute - but they are very challenging. Puppies may eat your apartment (no refund of security deposit); people who are gone for more than 5 hours at a time will need to make dog walker, neighbor or doggie daycare arrangements. We discourage the adoption of puppies to families with children under the age of six, since puppies will chew toys, shoes, blankets, hands, feet and other important parts of your child's anatomy.

Story
This sweet gal was found wandering around a city dump. A stranger rescued her but could not keep her so she ended up at our shelter. She is a bit overweight but we are working on that. She has a very kind disposition and gets along with other dogs of all ages. Puppies are a bit much for her though so she would do better around older dogs. Older kids would probably be best for her also. She is housetrained and will need a little work on a leash. She does like to be around people and can be a bit talkative when left alone (she does settle down). She gets around great and her weight doesn’t stop her from jumping on a comfortable couch! She’s just an older lady needing a forever home with a laid back family… some exercise is needed but not too much. We also use the most animal-friendly transport on the road. Rescue Riders Pet Transport. We transport every weekend alternating between the Northeast and the Midwest.

Story
Meet Vanilla! Vanilla is an outgoing, kissy, goofy little girl puppy who loves to nap and play with her sister Bean! These girls are Beagle, Pug, JRT mixes who weigh 7-8# now at 9-10 weeks old; and will weigh 25-30 lbs. as adults, best guess! Miss Vanilla is down for any adventure or a good couch snuggle. Squeaky toys are her favorite, and she loves to have a selection to choose from! Vanilla loves to be held and gives tiny kisses, before she darts off to check out the next interesting thing! Though Vanilla loves everyone she's met, she would be best with respectful kids 8+ due to her tiny size and sharp puppy teeth LOL. She's learning all about the sights and sounds in her foster home, and is starting to learn about house- and crate-training. Adoption preference will be given to families who plan to attend positive reinforcement puppy training with their new family member!
