Story
9 months old smart boy we got from a friend. He learns new commands and tricks very well, he already knows how to sit, stay, come, drop it, and paw. He loves long walks as he has a lot of energy, playing with toys, car rides, and eating the snow. I am open to driving far out to someone truly interested in adopting him.

Story
Meet Spark, a mid‑December 2025 baby with long legs, a soft heart, and a whole lot of devotion packed into his 16 pounds. This Border Collie mix is the perfect blend of silly and snuggly. He trots around with puppy confidence, playing with toys and enjoying life. When it’s time for a break, he wants to be near his people, chilling out together. Spark’s favorite thing in life is people. Dogs are fun, toys are good, but his person is everything. He plays well with the other dogs in his foster home, but he consistently chooses human companionship over canine company. He’ll be happiest with a family that enjoys a dog-friendly active lifestyle and carries a calm, easygoing energy. Think walks, exploring new places, and then relaxing together afterward. Daily exercise will keep him happy. He’s curious about the world and has already experienced car rides, new environments, suburban sights and sounds, and meeting new dogs. He’s comfortable around cats, giving them a polite sniff before moving on. Best in a home with kids roughly 10 and over. Spark is working hard on house training and does best with a predictable schedule. He needs frequent breaks at this age. Crating isn’t his favorite, but he settles best when he can see or hear his person nearby. On leash, he’s still figuring things out, primarily by following the lead of older, more experienced dogs. Spark will do well with a canine sibling and can be an only dog. Families with herding‑breed experience is preferred to help guide his bright, sensitive mind. He’ll also need support learning to be comfortable on his own, because his instinct is to stay close and be with his people. Obedience classes are required to ensure he has a solid start to a long life of going with you everywhere: he will no doubt be your best friend. If you’re looking for a devoted, leggy little shadow who will adore you endlessly, Spark is ready to light up your life. See more videos of Spark at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5ZDuP3CNniSx5VVqPczSHFQSSxH59T8I Spark is being fostered in Brooklyn Park, MN. Spark's adoption fee is $550 + MN sales tax. He is up to date on age-appropriate vaccines. He will be neutered and microchipped at the age of roughly 6 months. The cost of this procedure is included in his adoption fee. Upon adoption, all of our dogs go to their new homes with a collar and harness, leash, starter food, blanket, favorite toys & treats. They are current on flea/tick and heartworm prevention. As a foster-based rescue, we do not have a central facility to visit. Meet and greets with specific dogs are arranged once your adoption application (not an inquiry through Petfinder) has been received, processed, and approved. We are located in Minnesota and adopt to an area 400 miles from Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Story
Hi there! My name is Roxie, and I’m a one‑year‑old Border Collie mix with a big smile, a bigger heart, and 30 pounds of enthusiasm. People describe me as friendly, happy, curious, playful, energetic, and athletic. I love life, and I love sharing it with the people and dogs around me. I'm a sweetheart ready to give kisses anytime! My favorite things in the whole world are playing with my foster dog siblings, attention from humans, and, of course, food. Once I’ve had a chance to stretch my legs, I’m learning how to settle nicely in the house. I’m an active girl, so I’d be happiest with a family that enjoys getting outside and exploring. Before this thing called rescue, my life was pretty quiet and I didn’t get out a lot. My heart lies in peaceful places like parks or wooded trails. My foster family wants me to have a fabulous life, so they take me on a fun adventure every day. I’m getting braver all the time: we go to town and walk where there’s traffic and new noises, and we meet new people. It’s pretty cool. A fenced yard would be great for me, but it’s not required if my family can keep me safe on leash and let me run in a safe space. I am gentle with children who have dog experience – especially if they will rub my belly. Another friendly, playful dog in my new home is my biggest wish! Having a canine buddy gives me confidence and makes everything more fun. It’s probably best if I live in a cat-free home because I like chasing them. I’ve heard of this thing called obedience classes and can’t wait to sign up! My foster family is teaching me a lot: keeping four paws on the floor, what to chew on and they keep me on a potty training schedule that works perfectly! I’m smart and learn quickly. I’m very good in my crate, and I’m learning how to walk on a leash nicely. Car rides aren’t my favorite yet, but my foster family is helping me learn that they lead to fun adventures. One more thing: I love the water. Swimming days are the best days. If you’re looking for a joyful, affectionate, athletic young dog who’s eager to learn and excited for adventure, I think we could be a perfect match. Roxie is being fostered in Minneapolis, MN. Roxie's adoption fee is $450 + MN sales tax. She is spayed, microchipped and up to date on age-appropriate vaccines. Upon adoption, all of our dogs go to their new homes with a collar and harness, leash, starter food, blanket, favorite toys & treats. They are current on flea/tick and heartworm prevention. Story
Handsome Cap is the perfect companion! He's a 4-yr old, 47# Border Collie mix who loves his family and respects personal space. He will join you on your morning run or walk, then disappear and let you get on with your full day. He reappears at break time, ready for a bout of frisbee. He likes to stay out of your way, and is very polite. Cap will hop up onto the couch for a short time and whisper into your ear as you give him a hug. He understands 4 on the floor, sit, down, come and “hurry up,” which means he has to go potty BEFORE playing frisbee. He’s very attentive and smart, trying to figure out what you want from him, and doing his absolute best to oblige. Inside the house, Cap is chill and easy to live with, housebroken, crate trained and adapts to your schedule. If you usually get up early, he won’t wake you up when you get the chance to sleep in! He walks nicely in busy areas with cars, people, dogs, and bikes passing by. He’s not even afraid of thunder! While he does well with walks in the neighborhood, his favorite is a hike in the woods. He’s learning to walk with a loose leash at your side, making great progress until he sees a squirrel scatter by. He has strong prey drive, and would prefer to be the only animal in the house. Cap is on the shy side at first, but warms up to people in short order. He greets you enthusiastically, but politely, once he knows you. He's best suited to an adult home or one with older kids who will not pressure him to interact. He likes his space. Politeness for him goes both ways. He adores his frisbee, or rather, he adores it when you throw the frisbee for him. He’ll stare at you intently until you throw it and then deliver it back right to your feet. For inside play, he prefers a good session of tug. He’s a champ riding in a car, hopping in and settling right down. His foster mom takes him everywhere, including road trips to visit family. He loved visiting the lake and jumped right in! If you can give this boy the space he craves, including play time outside and alone-time inside, you will be rewarded with Happy Cappy smiles. Cap is being fostered in Minneapolis, MN. APPLY to adopt him at hoabcr.org/how-to-adopt Cap's adoption fee is $450 + MN sales tax. Story
Flare is the kind of puppy who makes you grin - bright‑eyed, curious, and convinced that life is one big adventure meant to be explored at full speed (with lots of cuddly naps too). Born in mid‑December 2025 and 18#, this Border Collie mix is the perfect blend of fun, resilience, smarts, and affection. Flare has a contagious enthusiasm for life, going all in on whatever he’s doing: tugging with gusto, wrestling with dog friends, delivering enthusiastic kisses, running like the wind, and welcoming every new person he meets to his fan club. He’s human‑focused, neutral toward other dogs, and happiest when his brain and body have something to do. A family that runs, hikes, trains, or enjoys dog sports will find him irresistible. He’s visited pet stores, explored parks, tagged along to dog school, and eagerly greeting each new adventure. He’s curious, observant, and steady. He has medium energy with the ability to relax once he’s had exercise or worked on obedience skills – he’s not a ‘stay in the house’ type of dog. Just like a kid can’t wait to start kindergarten, Flare is excited to take classes with his new family. He’s still a puppy learning things like housetraining, leash skills, nail trims, and encountering everyday things like vacuums. On leash, he’s impressive for his age. He rides nicely in the car when contained in a crate and can settle in one at home if he’s relaxed after a play or training session. Flare would thrive with a fenced yard and a family experienced with herding breeds. He can live with respectful kids who understand how to be kind and consistent with a puppy. He kindly requests a canine buddy in his new home, preferably one who likes to wrestle. He hasn’t met cats yet. If you’re looking for a bright, athletic, affectionate puppy who could grow into an incredible adventure buddy or partner in an active life, Flare is ready to light up your world. Flare is being fostered in Rochester, MN. Flare's adoption fee is $550 + MN sales tax. He is up to date on age-appropriate vaccines. He will be neutered and microchipped at the age of roughly 6 months. The cost of this procedure is included in his adoption fee. Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten.
