Meet sweet, little Max, who is about 10 months old, weighs 11 pounds, and is a Shih Tzu/Yorkie mix. He came into rescue because he unfortunately was abandoned when his owners no longer wanted him. A groomer took him in, groomed him and asked our rescue to take him.
Max is playful (he’s still a puppy!) and when not playing, likes to be right by his person, and especially likes to sleep with his person. He will bark when someone enters his space, just to alert you, but within minutes he will be their buddy. He likes all dogs and makes friends quickly. He would love a dog sibling of similar playful energy, but would also be happy being the only dog in the family, as long as he has plenty of play time to release his puppy energy. He seems to do fine with kids, but the kids must be older and understand how to cautiously and respectfully play with a young, small dog.
Because Max is still a puppy and has lots of energy, he needs lots of exercise! He would love a fenced in yard to zoom around in, but if that is not possible, he needs frequent walks daily. So PLEASE, if you cannot provide this level of activity, do not consider Max for your family. He would benefit from a puppy training class, and his adopters are encouraged to enroll him, not just for his benefit, but also for theirs. His foster mom has taught him some basic commands, but he is a smart little boy and can do better with some formal training.
Max plays hard and then enjoys taking a nap. He has some stuffies, chew toys and balls that he plays with. If his person is busy, he will get right on them and with gentle paws, will tell you he would like some petting or ear and body scratches. He loves scratches anywhere.
Max is pretty well housetrained, but like any dog, does best if he is taken out about every four hours.
These are the requirements for Max’s new family:
1. Because Max is a puppy, and Shih Tzus can live 16+ years, applications will be accepted only from age appropriate individuals who will be able to care for Max for his entire life.
2. A family who is home much of the day and can provide a high energy level of activity for Max. He is still a puppy and will require lots of exercise for the next few years.
3. A fenced yard would be great, although if not possible, the family must provide lots of exercise and mental stimulation for Max.
4. A family with children over the age of ten who have experience interacting and respectfully living with a small, energetic dog will be considered.
5. A family who will include Max in their daily, and dog appropriate, activities would be ideal. He really loves being with his people, enjoys riding in the car, and is a great family companion.
6. Consider enrolling Max in a puppy training class so that he can become the perfect family member.
7. Another small dog of similar energy and playfulness will be okay, although Max would be fine being the only dog.
8. Allow Max to sleep in bed with his family.
9. Live within 30 miles of Hopkins, MN.
10. Try to attend to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September.
Max is so adorable and loyal and just wants to be loved and cared for. Whoever gets this little guy will be very lucky.
Max is being neutered on November 18th and will be available for adoption after a brief recovery, but adoption applications are being accepted now. He is current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventive. His adoption fee is $520.00 plus $46.93 sales tax for a total of $566.93.
