Story
In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Petey is an 8-year-old male Shih Tzu mix that weighs 15 pounds. He has beautiful curly black hair with a small white mark on his chest. Petey came into rescue when we were contacted by a veterinary clinic, where he was taken to be euthanized because his owners didn’t want him anymore. The vet thought Petey was a sweet boy and wouldn’t, in all good conscience, euthanize him, so the owners just gave him to the clinic. Petey had been badly neglected by his owners, was horribly matted and had no previous veterinary care. When he was evaluated by the veterinarian, Petey was found to have chronic kidney disease. He is now on a very specific prescription diet for kidney disease and is doing very well. He cannot have any other food or treats because his kidney disease will return and he will prematurely die. But if maintained on the prescription diet, he can live a long, healthy, happy life. No other medications, other than the diet, are necessary. Petey is a loving, happy guy. He follows his people and wants to be by you or at least always be able to see you. He likes to spend his evenings sitting with you. He enjoys going outside and loves a fenced in yard. Petey is pretty well house trained, and his foster parents continue to work on that by letting him out every couple hours during the day, and by having piddle pads available for him at night. He sleeps contently in his own bed at night. He gets along with his foster siblings so a small companion dog would be fine.. An adults only home would suit him perfectly, although older children (older than 12 years), who are quiet and respectful would be okay. These are the requirements for Petey’s new family: • An adult, stay at home family, although older children would be okay. • Petey does not do stairs so he needs to live in a single story home. • A fenced yard is a plus.t. He loves to explore the outdoors, but as importantly, he must be let out every 2-3 hours to urinate, and a fenced yard would facilitate that. • Petey needs a family that can willingly afford his prescription kidney disease diet, and be vigilant about feeding him ONLY the prescribed food, including treats. He must stay on this for the rest of his life in order to remain healthy. • A family within 60 miles of the Twin Cities. • Commit to attending the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion every year in September. Petey is neutered, current on vaccinations and on heartworm and flea preventative. He is scheduled for a dental January 3rd at Rice Creek with a recheck of labs scheduled a month later in February, also at Rice Creek. Petey’s adoption fee is $270.00 plus $23.02 sales tax for a total cost of $293.02. To meet Petey, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at PETCO in Southtown Center in Bloomington.

Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.April 21, 2024, 7:51 pm

Story
Finn is a healthy 8 year old Rottweiler. We have had him since he was a puppy. He is calm and enjoys playing outside with balls, watching tv with the family and cuddling. He tends to forget how big he is and tries to fit on laps. Finn lives with another dog and they play well together. Over the last 6 months, he has started being more territorial and has gotten aggressive around food. We have young children in the house and do not want them to inadvertently interrupt Finn when he is eating.

Story
Meet Drey, the most adorable bundle of joy just waiting to become your new best friend! While he may take a little time to warm up, once he does, you'll discover the sweetest little guy you could ever imagine. Drey's past is a bit of a mystery, and we can only guess at what might have caused his initial hesitation around new people. It's heartbreaking to think about what he might have experienced, especially considering he had a tough encounter with animal control who had to use a catch pole to rescue him. That experience likely added to his trauma. But here's the good news: Drey is making fantastic progress! He's already crate trained and is doing wonderfully on a leash. We're still working on getting him to go potty while on a leash, as he's more comfortable doing his business in our securely fenced 6-foot wood yard. When he needs to go, he'll politely let you know with a few barks or howls. Drey has a playful side that's simply irresistible. He absolutely adores toys, and watching him play with them is an absolute delight! In our commitment to find the best possible homes for our animals, we believe there are a couple of key factors that will help Drey thrive: no young human kiddos in the household and a fenced-in yard. These conditions will set Drey up for success and happiness in his new home. Don't let his initial shyness deter you – Drey is a hidden gem waiting to shine in a loving and patient forever home. If you're ready to welcome this sweet nugget into your life, please get in touch with us. Drey is ready to embark on a new journey filled with love and happiness, and you could be the one to make it happen! While Drey does live with other dogs, he does not have any interest in playing or interactin with them.  He is a loner when it comes to the canines! The perfect home for Drey would be one where there weren't alot of people coming and going as well as his person / people being home more than they are away. If you are looking for a sweet, cuddly, companion and you are an adult with a quiet home that doens't have shared walls ( Drey is a bit of a barker from time to time especially when he meets new people and new dogs ) he would love to meet you! ##1749222##

Story
Meet Champ, a striking 75-pound blend of Doberman Pinscher and Staffordshire Terrier, with a heart as big as his physique. This charming gentleman is on the lookout for a special lady to call his own. Champ takes his fitness seriously and loves to stay active. His long legs make him a fantastic runner, especially when he's bounding through winter snow on exhilarating trail runs. He's even a pro at solo fetch, enthusiastically tossing a toy and retrieving it with zest. Champ's game for a flirtatious tug of war, making him an excellent muscle-building partner. After a good workout, Champ indulges in some self-care by tending to his dental hygiene with chew toys by the fireside or a well-deserved Kong filled with peanut butter and a tasty milkbone. He may take a bit of time to warm up to new people, but once he's comfortable, his affection knows no bounds. Champ absolutely adores bedtime snuggles, relishing the role of the big spoon to keep you warm on those chilly nights. Champ would thrive in a home without shared walls, as he takes his job as your protector seriously and will alert you to any passerby with his enthusiastic barks. While he's great with other dogs, Champ isn't a fan of cats or small creatures. Due to his exuberance, he's best suited for a household with older children, preferably in middle school or above. When it comes to adults, Champ is looking for a home where he can be the center of attention among adult women. He's had some tough experiences in the past, likely with male figures, and prefers to avoid competition for affection. This wonderful boy would also benefit from a family with prior experience with bully breeds and confident, strong leadership. Champ isn't just brawn and good looks; he's also quite the smarty. He's already mastered commands like "sit," "shake," and "drop" during his time in foster care, and he's eager to learn more from his special lady. With impeccable manners, he's a joy to take out on the town, strutting his stuff with the leash in your capable hands. Champ is a sweet and playful companion seeking the perfect lady to be his exercise partner, snuggle buddy, and evening date. If you think you might be the one he's been waiting for, please send an application to his foster, and they'll arrange that first unforgettable date. ##1329389##

Story
Greetings, dear friends! I'm Groot, and in the loving embrace of my foster family, they've dubbed me "the best boy." At 55 lbs, I'm a delightful blend of love and dashing good looks, wrapped up in a pit bull package. With me, you'll find the perfect balance of energy, playfulness, and the occasional lazy day as a couch potato. Currently, I reside with my foster parents, a human foster sibling, and a canine foster sister whom I adore with all my heart. While I've found a soulmate in my foster sister, it's worth mentioning that there have been a few other dogs I've met who didn't quite earn my seal of approval. But fear not, I don't require the title of "only dog" because I absolutely relish playing tug of war with my foster sister. All I need are slow introductions to ensure everyone feels comfortable, and I'm confident we can form lasting friendships that would make our tails wag with joy. I've developed a fondness for leisurely walks with my foster family and have been diligently refining my leash manners. Nowadays, the only time they're not stellar is when something fascinating catches my eye, beckoning me to explore. This summer, I had a revelation when I discovered the wonders of a hose. Let me tell you, it's one of the most captivating things ever – chasing that elusive stream of water is a sheer delight! In my time with my foster family, I've acquired some impressive skills. I've learned how to sit, stay, and even shake paws. Admittedly, I don't fully comprehend the reasoning behind these commands, but I've come to realize that they result in the most delectable treats, so I don't question them too much. After an exhilarating play session, I find immense joy in lounging around, chewing on toys, sticks (though sticks are strictly an outdoor affair, as per my foster mom), or bones while basking in the warm embrace of the sun. My foster family likes to tease me, claiming that I occasionally fall asleep and snore during these peaceful moments, but I choose not to believe them; that would be rather embarrassing! Now, my foster dad mentioned something about watering the garden, and I'm quite certain he could use my assistance with that hose. If you'd like to know more about me, please don't hesitate to submit an application. I'm eager to meet you, share my love, and embark on this heartwarming journey together. ##1749538##
