Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu. We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Story

Luna (also called Tuna) is a very good girl and deserves a great home! We rescued her in 2020 when she was about 1 year old. Tuna LOVES to snuggle in bed (or anywhere) and likes hunting for mice in the yard. She is great around cats, chickens, kids and most dogs. She is not okay off-leash at dog parks. Luna’s excitement can be misinterpreted by defensive dogs in off leash areas and has caused dog fights in the past. She is NOT an aggressive dog, but she plays very rough! We are choosing to rehome her as we have 3 very small children. She has never bitten anyone and is good at growling to warn others if she is uncomfortable. She is a very affectionate girl and a great dog and we would love to see her find a home with humans who have a lot of time and love to give her. Luna has a limp from slipping on Ice last winter (we think). It comes and goes. She has been prescribed a doggy NSAID for it.

He gets along wonderfully with his foster siblings (both dog and humans!) showing just how patient and sweet he truly is. He strolls along politely and makes walks easy and enjoyable. Even more impressive for a husky, Meeko is not much of a barker. This beautiful, well-mannered 4-year-old girl has worked so hard with her trainer and has become an absolute leash-walking champ! She’s fully muzzle-conditioned and happy to wear it! Sasha has never shown any people aggression, but she does have a strong prey drive—so she’ll need to wear her muzzle anytime she’s outside for the safety of our small dog friends and any other small critters in your neighborhood. We’d love to see her future home have a tall privacy fence where she can safely enjoy regular off-leash time without her muzzle. She’s affectionate, loyal, and loves being close to her people—whether it’s relaxing after a long day or joining you on adventures. Sasha does well with other dogs with slow introductions. Trixie is an affectionate and attentive young lady who plays hard and sleeps hard. She enjoys playing tug of war with her toys and is so friendly to everyone who greets her. She knows her name and will come running with a huge "smile" on her snout. Trixie is a lover ❤️, and is more motivated by praise than treats. She will sit when asked and rings the bell hanging on our front door when she hears the words "bye,bye". She's working on puppy pad training and is making real progress with occasional "oopsie" moments. Trixie is a great cuddler and enjoys watching The Dog whisperer with her foster mom. She gets along great with other dogs and is a sweet little teddy bear to everyone. Barking mostly when she is excitedly playing, but otherwise a quiet baby.
