Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Meet Harry! From his foster:    OMG!! Harry is the sweetest little fuzzball. He's great at cuddling and taking naps. Loves to play chase around the yard and try and catch his tail. He's fairly food motivated so training is going well, but he's still a puppy so he get's tired quick and distracted easily. He's mostly focused on trying to eat his brother's (same litter) ears. Mostly ignores our cat. What does Harry love? Playing chase around the yard, belly rubs and cheese.  Dislikes are- can't find a thing he dislikes! Harry is playful and cuddly.  He is 50% potty trained and walks okay on a leash, although being a puppy takes time to learn. He is good with his fosters 13 year old, but does puppy nip so may not be good with younger kids, but does love being around other dogs and has a cat he's living with right now. Meet Winston! Winston is a sweet, cuddly little guy who is curious, playful, and super smart. He's very assertive when he doesn't want to do something, but also super engaged when he does. He's very food motivated so he's easy to guide, and he very athletic and daring. Winston loves belly rubs and naps!  Dislikes reflections... He barks like crazy when he sees something move in a window or glass reflection. That's just the puppy side of him right now as he figures out things that are real or not. He is 60% potty trained and 60% walks on a leash... will go limp if he doesn't want to walk anymore. He's a baby and just wants an assist. His foster says he's good with their 13yo... because he's a puppy he does nips a bit, so wouldn't recommend small children until he learns better play behavior. Winston would love to have another dog to play with, as he's still learning the ropes on how to become an adult dog. The rescue may not have him neutered at adoption time, and ask that his new owner can commit to bringing him to our rescue approved vet to get this done  in November. Crus is a 4 year old male neutered American Pitbull. He is a very sweet boy and like to go for walks and sunbathe in the summer. He thinks he should be a lap dog and loves to cuddle up. He like to play fetch and know basic commands. He would do best as an only pet. Cruz does have environmental allergies so does require daily oral medication and his ears cleaned/medicated 3 times a week. His ears a deformed due to chronic ear infections not being treated. Cruz requires sedated nail trims done by a veterinarian. He does have some special needs, but he is totally worth it. He is a very loving and loyal dog.

Sox is a great dog! She's very high energy and will need an active household! She's potty trained and loves to chew (she can only have tough toys). She will be one on Oct 8th, we've had her since she was 8 months old. She does not do well with our two year old daughter, she's never been mean but doesn't know her own strength. She really is a good girl, she's if our daughter was older we wouldn't have any problem keeping her, it breaks my heart that I have to put her on here. The adoption fee may be negotiable I really just wanted to make sure she does go to a good home that will care for her!

I think I would do best with an experienced dog owner to help perfect my leash walking and being comfortable around all dogs. I get nervous around other dogs I don't know and like to protect my owner. However, I love tolerant cats and children! I sleep in my kennel at night and I can be in there during the day too! 3 year old George has been neutered, brought up to date on his vaccinations, and has a microchip. George would love for you to meet him and his stuffed duck. Please complete an application on the Carver Scott Humane Society's website to meet George!
