Story
Meet Marco - He is a survivor. This is a story that will break your heart. Marco came to us with another dog (who has since been adopted). On a frigid January afternoon, Marco was found chained to a tree (with the other dog). The ground was frozen, with no grass in sight. Two metal buckets were left for the dogs. One with frozen filthy water and the other empty. Both dogs were emaciated and hovering to try and collect any heat they could from the frozen tree stump. If that wasn't enough, it is only due to a house-fire these (2) dogs were discovered. The fire department went to search around the home for anyone else left in the house, instead they found (2) dogs tied to a tree in the yard. Thankfully, Marco is with us now, and ready for a true loving home. Marco is very sweet with people he trusts but due to his past, he will need a savvy owner that can work with his guarding and show him the ropes on how to live in a home. Once he was removed from the property, he started to show some guarding behavior around his food (we can't really blame him!) Marco will need a home that will continue training so he can decompress from shelter life and begin the next chapter of his life "Adopted". He is appropriate for an adult-only home with no other animals. With everything this poor boy has been through, he still looks for love from humans, which is a great example of why dogs are the best creatures ever! Sid has been waiting TOO long for his forever family to find him... This handsome boy has been waiting since 2017 for his forever family to come along. He has lots of volunteer buddies at the shelter who have amazing things to say about him. He is an active boy who loves long walks, but also will make the best tv watching companion. Sid is looking to be the only dog in the home, but he did live with a cat in his previous life. Sid is also house trained and enjoys going for rides and getting a puppacino! Story
Meet Bandit - Our handsome 6.5 year old Hound mix. Bandit was surrendered to us by his owners due to behavior issues, in August 2018. They adopted Bandit from a local "no kill" rescue when he was a puppy, but sadly he ended up with us because they wouldn't take him back. Bandit is on the search for a new home with patient, loving, savvy, experienced owners. Bandit likes other dogs, and as per his previous owners, he is house trained and knows the commands "paw" and "down", and since being with us, and working weekly with his shelter buddies and he is excellent in training classes! Bandits ideal home is an adult only household that has experience with guarding or possessive behavior. Bandit is also looking for a quiet, low traffic household due to him being nervous of strangers. Training, or hiring a trainer is highly recommended to work on his stranger reactivity and guarding behavior. If you are interested in learning more on Bandit, contact our placement team at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter:E: adoption@hempsteadny.govE: foster@hempsteadny.govE: rescue@hempsteadny.govT: 516.785.5220#AdoptBandit #adoptme #houndmix #survivor #adoptdontshop #dogsofinstagram #dogsofig #adoptmeny #bruisednotbroken #dogsofny #dogsofnyc #dogsofli #adoptadogny #lookingforahome #longislanddogs #longislanddogmom #longislanddogdad #adoptionistheonlyoption #houndmix #houndforadoption

Story
Finding himself alone on the streets, Shawn saw an older lady with a dog, and started following them. She called the police, who came to her location, and called us to pick Shawn up. Back at the shelter, Shawn is an energetic, playful dog. He takes a minute to warm up to new people, enjoys treats, and is very engaging. At this time, we feel Shawn would thrive best in a solo dog home with kids 17 years and older. If you are interested in learning more, and getting the most up to date information on Shawn, please contact our placement team: T: 516.785.5220E: adoption@hempsteadny.gov E: foster@hempsteadny.govE: rescue@hempsteadny.gov#adoptdontshop #dogsofinstagram #dogsofig #adoptmeny #bruisednotbroken #tohasdogs #dogsofny #dogsofnyc #dogsofli #adoptadogny #lookingforahome #longislanddogs #longislanddogmom #longislanddogdad #adoptionistheonlyoption #pittielove #pittiesrock #pitsrule #ifitaintpit

Story
Princess Mya is a petite 54 pound terrier mix. Princess Mya originally came here in August of 2021, was adopted out fairly quick to a family and due to her resource guarding, she had incidents in the home where her family did not feel they could care for her any longer. Princess Mya now finds herself back here 2 years later, and will need a home that will understand her behavioral challenges and commit to working on them. She does well on leash, but will need time to warm up to being pet, as she does have some handling sensitivities. Due to her behavioral issues, she will be placed in a solo dog only home with no children, but did get along with the family cat. Story
Butchy, our 3 yr old, 120-pound American Bulldog, is for Rescue Placement only. While at the shelter Butchy has been able to make many human buddies. He loves to romp in the play yard with his tennis balls, splash in our doggy-pool (warmer weather), investigate on our creek trail and enjoy all the different scents of our flower garden. He earns plenty of treats from all the tricks he's learned. He also has found friends among his dog-walking buddies. Butchy was adopted as a puppy from a breeder, and lived with his family but there was an incident in the home where the family felt it was best to surrender him to the shelter. Butchy arrived to the shelter as a nervous 8-month-old puppy. He needed time to decompress so we could begin working with him. Butchy has shown the shelter staff and trainers he is eager to learn new things. He excelled in "how to trade", among other tricks. Butchy's ONLY option is to leave the shelter with an experienced rescue group that understands resource guarding & extra large breeds. Butchy will need a Board and Train facility so he can receive the much-needed continued behavior modification he deserves.
