Needs experienced adopter, Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Courtesy Post: Owner Surrender/Rehoming- Queens, NY Woof, I’m Kumi. I am a 2 yo aussie/border collie mix and weigh 39 lbs. I am spayed, up to date on vaccinations, on preventatives and microchipped. I am also housebroken and crate trained. I love feeling the wind in my fur during car rides, exploring new places (not too crowded) and running around open fields. My favorite toy is a flirt pole and I have the energy to play it forever if you don’t say “all done.” Lots of people said I’m very smart since I often look up at my hooman on walks, know a bunch of tricks and hand signals. Little do they know, I would do anything for food! If you leave food out, I’ll try to steal it when you’re not looking. When meeting new people, I could be nervous (moving away or becoming reactive where I’ll lunge and bark) or very excited (jumping, which I’m not supposed to do). I’m usually afraid of males but when I warm up to them, I prefer the males over females. Playing with dogs is so fun but I need to be alpha! I’ll try to snap if another dog goes near my things or gets a greeting from my hoomans since I’m a resource guarder. When on leash, I’m unpredictable when I see another dog, just like people, but if they start barking at me, I will be triggered. Many things scare me which makes me reactive 😞 I’ll need my next hooman to be patient, continue my training and build my confidence. My next hooman must have experience with reactive doggos. Like many Aussies, I’m very quirky and photogenic! Take a look at my Instagram (@looni.kumi). We can sing together when you go “awoooo” in the right pitch. I’ll communicate with you through staring contests, whining and weird noises. If I sense someone near the door (even if they are across the street and this doesn’t only apply to my home, it could be anywhere I’m staying at), I will be your protector and bark at them. I’ll thrive in a quiet home in a more rural/suburb area where my hooman is home often or works from home. No fur siblings or small children please. A big fenced yard to run around is a must! My recall is 80% there but if i know you have food, I'll come running. Continuing training for my reactivity is very important! At home, I love to join you on the couch to cuddle and get lots of belly rubs and pets! I will also nudge toys on you, so we can play tug of war or fetch. During down time, I enjoy napping near your feet or in my “place” (elevated bed). If you think you can provide a great home for Kumi, please contact the owner listed below. There is a $100 rehoming fee to assure good folks with good intentions. This fee will be donated to Australian Shepherds Furever for their assistance in placing Kumi. Story
Emma is a sweet and super smart girl that has so much love to give. Emma has been living at the shelter since 2016, and it's about time this girl find her "furever" family. Emma loves going on long walks on nature trails, crushing an agility course, and of course, a nice petting session. Emma is the perfect balance of playful and couch potato; outside she can keep up with the best of them, but once she's inside, a couch and a soft blanket are all she needs to relax. She loves to cuddle up and get a belly rub! Emma is thrilled to meet all people, but she wants to be the only canine child in the household. **Reminder** We are facilitating adoptions by appointment ONLY. If you arrive at the shelter without an appointment we will not be able to accommodate you. Thank you for your understanding. Please call the shelter (516-869-6311) during working hours (Mon. to Fri. 9AM-4PM; Sat. 10AM-4PM) for more information about Emma, the adoption process at the shelter, and to confirm availability. Story
Sweet senior Athena has been with us at the shelter since 2017. She was in a home that loved her for her entire life, but sadly her owner passed away and there was no one in the family that could take her on. Athena may be a senior, but you would never know it! This girl LIVES to chase a tennis ball and never seems to get tired of it. She’ll even trade you kisses for the ball! Athena walks nicely on a leash, but if she sees a squirrel to chase she can take you for a ride. Therefore, we recommend that Athena not be walked by children. Athena loves all people she meets but she wants to be the only pet in the home. 10AM-4PM) for more information about Athena, the adoption process at the shelter, and to confirm availability. Please go to www.theshelterconnection.org for more information about and directions to the shelter.

Story
Shadow is a 7 year old Jindo mix with an adventurous spirit! He loves to spend time outside, go for long walks on the trail, and playing with tennis balls. He is a seasoned pro at our agility course- he especially loves the tunnel! Shadow can be aloof at times, which is typical of the Jindo breed, but he absolutely enjoys the company of his human companions. He can’t resist a good scratching session! Shadow gets along well with dogs of his own size, but would do best in a home without small sized dogs, cats, or other small pets. If you are interested in learning more about Shadow, please call the shelter at 516-869-6311 or email animalshelter@northhempsteadny.gov to request an adoption application. **Reminder** We are facilitating adoptions by appointment ONLY. If you arrive at the shelter without an appointment we will not be able to accommodate you. Thank you for your understanding. Buddy has had a rough life and is looking for an experienced adopter with the patience to help him come out of his shell and build his confidence.
