Make a Difference! Adopt a Shelter Dog!
This handsome hunk is Max, a 100-pound gentle giant with a heart just as big as his paws. Max found himself in a Queens, NY shelter when he simply outgrew apartment life—but he’s thriving now in his foster home and ready for a forever family of his own.
Max is doing wonderfully with his foster siblings (three mixed-breed dogs) and would love a home with another playful dog to keep him company. He really shines in dog-to-dog friendships and enjoys good, old-fashioned rowdy play—especially with his biggest foster sibling, a shepherd/husky mix.
When it comes to people, Max is a bit of a shy guy at first. We don’t think he had much exposure to new people in his past, so he can be nervous when visitors arrive. He has no signs of aggression whatsoever, he’s just fearful and may try to hide behind his foster mom (which is both endearing and slightly comical given his size). Slow introductions, patience, and plenty of treats are the key to his heart. Once Max feels safe, his true personality comes out: gentle, happy, and incredibly sweet. He should never be forced to greet—he’ll let you know when he’s ready.
Max is still very much a big puppy and will need plenty of toys, bones, and enrichment to keep him busy. He loves fetching tennis balls and can catch them mid-air like a pro, even from impressive distances. Squeaky toys and plush toys are also high on his favorites list. He enjoys going for walks, though he’ll benefit from some leash training to curb his enthusiasm (he’s strong and doesn’t quite know it yet). He definitely needs regular exercise to burn off puppy energy.
At just one year old, Max still has some growing to do, and filling out! He’s currently a bit underweight and in that adorably awkward, gangly stage, but once mature he’ll be a very large, powerful dog. His former family did an excellent job house-training him; he hasn’t had a single accident in foster care. He knows “sit” and “paw,” takes treats gently, and has proven he can be trusted uncrated while his foster family is out.
With his foster mom, Max is snuggly, affectionate, goofy, loyal, and incredibly loving. He actually thinks he is a lap dog. He has ultra-soft fur, beautiful soulful eyes, and once you earn his trust, you’ll have a friend for life.
Max is neutered, microchipped, heartworm negative, and up to date on all vaccinations. His ideal new home would have another dog (or dogs), no small children who could be accidentally knocked over, and a family experienced with large-breed dogs who understands that sometimes the biggest dogs have the softest hearts. If you’re looking for a devoted companion who will grow into an amazing lifelong friend, Max might just be your perfect match 🐾
