Story
Missy (previously named Anise) was found as a stray and brought to the Associated Humane Society of Newark. She struggled in the shelter environment, but clearly lived in a home. Despite the stress, she bonded to the staff of the shelter and welcomed love and attention. She is estimated to be about 6 years old and is 14 pounds. Missy is a special needs dog. She has had some medical issues since coming to Peace Pointe. First she had a lump removed, but thankfully the biopsy was good and it was benign! Phew. Sadly, after her first foster-to-adopt family fell through, she experienced sudden blindness… This poor little lady had to see an Ophthalmologist and it was determined she has an autoimmune disease (not contagious to other dogs) called Panuveitis. She is currently on steroids, and we will know more about her long term prognosis after this treatment. She is set to revisit the doctor on 4/22. We will update you via social media as soon as we know more. Please give us a follow on Instagram and/or facebook to follow her very unfair journey…
Despite the sudden blindness, she is very active and excitable! She loves listening to the birds, riding in the car, cuddling on the couch, guarding the front door from squirrel invaders, and playing with toys.
Missy walks very excitedly on the leash, and wants to meet most people who pass her by. She loves to cuddle with you, and like a typical terrier likes to dig and snuffle in your lap or on the couch. She could go home with a compatible pup. Before the blindness, we said she could not go home to cats or small animals because she would chase, and had a prey drive. Obviously this changes things a bit, so we believe it is possible to live with a cat who could evade her or gently correct her. She is housebroken and doesn't mind her crate, in fact it is her safe space. Missy has an adorable underbite!
Missy is a tough but sweet cookie looking for a second chance at life with a family who will cherish her and understand her terrier-ness and special needs. She would do best in a home that can provide her with structure and routine. She can be a dominant girl, and would ideally go home with a compatible pup that can keep up with her, and help her navigate the new world she suddenly finds herself in. Missy is currently in a foster home in Atlantic Highlands, NJ.
Because of her sudden blindness, we are no longer considering a foster-to-adopt situation. It is not fair to make her learn a new environment if it is only temporary. We are happy to do any meet and greets, and certainly multiple meet ups in necessary, but we want to place her into a permanent home going forward so that she only needs to learn one new environment from here on out. Are you the special family willing to give her this opportunity at a normal and cherished life?
