Story
PLEASE READ BELOW FOR OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION LINK MEET DEXTER the MALTI-CHON-POO North New Jersey Dexter is an 18lb 10 yo Maltese-Bichon-Poodle and the sweetest little dude. Dexter was loved his whole life but unfortunately his elderly owner could no longer care for him. He is loving, gentle, and quiet and would be a wonderful companion for someone who is retired or works from home and wants a buddy to hang out with. Dexter loves to nap and EAT and enjoys meandering around the yard sniffing all the smells. In his former home he didn’t have a yard so he is accustomed to going for walks. He lived with another small breed dog in his former home and currently in his foster home and doesn’t have much interest in them. He very much prefers his human but he is pretty independent as well. He is just an all-around easy going guy that is just happy to have a soft bed and yummy food with some pets and loving in between. Dexter is not a fussy eater but his tummy was a bit of figuring out. He landed on a basic kibble and has been regular since. He was brought UTD, HW negative, had a dental and cherry eye removal (it won’t come back), full blood work and xrays, he is neutered, and he is housebroken for outside but he will use potty pads if available. He is a loving little guy that deserves his special person for the holidays. If you are interested in meeting Dexter please fill out our adoption application (link below) and read our process (below and on our website). Please note we do not reply to all applications we receive, unfortunately we do not have the bandwidth to do so at this time. We only reply if we would like to move forward with your application and we will get in touch relatively quickly so please watch your email and answer your phone. Thank you very much in advance for your understanding!! His adoption donation is $450. TO BE CONSIDERED, PLEASE FILL OUT OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION We only process complete applications and providing false information immediately disqualifies you from adopting. https://gingerbreaddogs.org/adopt-overview/adoption-application/ Please follow our Facebook page to see new dogs as they arrive and to keep up on the daily shenanigans: https://www.facebook.com/gingerbreaddogs ABOUT OUR PROCESS: WE ONLY CONTACT APPLICANTS WITH WHOM WE WANT TO MOVE FORWARD. Our adoption process is on our website. You can see more about our daily operations on our Facebook page. PLEASE call your vet office right now and give them permission to speak with rescues if you are applying to adopt from any rescue. Ask them to mark your file. If they will not speak with us, we will move on to the next application and you will not be considered. We consider out-of-area adoptions on a case-by-case basis. All meet & greets and adoptions are held in north New Jersey, and we do not transport our pups. You must come to NJ. We also do not “hold” dogs. It is “first qualified, first come” and our expectation is you will move quickly to conduct the meet & greet if you are approved. An approved application does not guarantee adoption of any dog from our rescue, and we reserve the right to deny adoption at any point during the process.

Story
PLEASE READ BELOW FOR OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION LINK MEET ARTHUR the PEKINGESE North New Jersey Arthur is a 10lb around 5 yo Pekingese and a little spit fire of a dude. He was SEVERELY neglected in his former home. He was marked a "cruelty" case and had severe fecal and urine scald (burns) on his entire tail, hind legs, bum area, his privates, and up his under carriage. He couldn't squat to go potty and trying to go #2 was impossible. He was completely backed up because he couldn't let it out due to the pain. We started treatment immediately and with some antibiotic numbing powder he was going potty within 24 hours. And he went potty 12 times over the next 36 hours. Naturally he was reactive to being touched especially around his bum since it was so painful for him. He was snapping and would break skin. But through that process he quickly learned he could trust his foster mom even though he clearly did not trust humans. It has been a long road for this little guy but he is a loving little guy that wants to be with his person like a typical Peke. He has learned not to "react" with biting but the propensity is there and moving to a new home with new people will be scary for him. He needs time to decompress and learn the new routine and that he can trust the new human(s) in the home. There is no immediate grabbing, hugging, or kissing. Once he trusts you then he is the most affectionate little velcro guy. If he could he would be attached to his foster mommy's neck 24/7. Except for when he needs to police the yard from the garbage truck and post man. He also has his ups and downs with the other small breed dogs in his foster home. There are those he ignores completely. Those he plays with and has a great time. And a few he deems worthy of trying to dominate and thus scuffles ensue. Therefore, a meet & greet with any existing pups in the home is a requirement. A safe bet would be confident friendly females and easy-going males, all at least a little bigger than him. You should be experienced and/or ok with a scuffle here or there. He does correct and has certain phrases that he knows and listens to well. Given his history, there are no children in Arthur's future. You would be putting those children at risk and you will be 100% liable. Our contract is iron clad and it will be extremely clear about his history and this particular point. If you have kids or grandkids that visit, Arthur is not the dog for you. He is a wonderful little companion for someone who lives alone and can respect the process of letting him decompress so he can learn you are his new person and he can trust you. He's been through enough and needs a consistent stable environment. His digestive system was a mess upon arrival and his allergy testing revealed he is allergic to chicken, rice, and a lot of preservatives and additives common in most foods. His allergy report will be shared so you have everything you need to keep him healthy. He is good with beef so he was switched to the Grain Free Fresh Pet Beef Nuggets. His IBS stomach issues immediately cleared up and he has been regular since. There are plenty of items on his list to choose from so you can figure out what works for you and him. Arthur has been neutered and his burned scrotal skin was surgically removed, he had a dental, xrays, full blood work, allergy testing, brought UTD, and is HW negative. His skin has healed and his fur has grown back. He's had many groomings and he is relatively cooperative for them. He still gets a little jumpy around his private parts. Same at the vet, he is mostly a good boy but can be a little leery. He is housebroken for outside and also knows how to use potty pads if available. In September 2025 he had his annual exam, xrays and full blood work, 4DX, etc. He is in perfect health! This poor little guy has been through the ringer. He just wants to love someone and have someone love him back that he can trust will never hurt him again. He loves having a fenced yard he can police (and he is a very good guard dog for a 10 pounder :) and obviously this is the safest environment for him and the public. So a yard would be our first choice for him although we will consider other scenarios on a case-by-case basis. He is obviously not the dog for someone who wants to take him out and about to stores and visiting family and friends on a daily basis. We have those dogs so check out our website. He is a special little guy that needs a special person and home situation so we will not be rushing to place him. Arthur will only be placed within 60 miles of north New Jersey obviously because we expect to work with his new owner and be a resource. Please note we do not reply to all applications we receive, unfortunately we do not have the bandwidth to do so at this time. We only reply if we would like to move forward with your application and we will get in touch relatively quickly so please watch your email and answer your phone. Story
PLEASE READ BELOW FOR OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION LINK MEET STELLA the Lab Mix (tall and skinny body frame with a deep chest like a Greyhound) North New Jersey Stella is the sweetest girl and as easy as they come. She loves sunning herself in the yard and taking naps. She is a very good communicator and lets you know when she needs to go out, wants to come in, needs water, etc. She also let's you know if someone is approaching the house, although she doesn't move from her sunny spot to do so. She is very well behaved in the house and clearly had some training and strict rules in her former home. She seeks approval to move around at all turns. It’s kind of sad actually. She is spayed, UTD, her blood work and xrays are normal, HW negative, she was treated for Lyme, her mouth is nice and clean so she didn't need a dental, housebroken, and she weighs 69 lbs. Her digestive system was a disaster upon arrival so we did allergy testing (5Strands) and the ole gal knew what she needed—the only thing she would eat and she had some great options—Annamaet Lean kibble (green bag). It’s as boring and vanilla as it comes. Her stomach cleared up immediately and she has been regular since. Stella is a wonderful gal who deserves her very own person to spend her retirement. She is very happy to meander around a small yard and plop down. She doesn’t really need to be walked so she is a great option for someone who just wants to let their dog out into the yard and back in. Given she is older and has long legs, she should not be doing a lot of stairs. She can do a step or two to get in and out of the house but she is not doing a flight of steps. So ideally a Ranch style house would be wonderful for her and obviously would prolong her life. Please fill out our adoption application if you are interested in Stella (link below). Please note we do not reply to all applications. Unfortunately we do not have the bandwidth. We only reach out if we would like to move forward in the process with your application. PLEASE READ BELOW FOR OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION LINK - WE CANNOT RESPOND TO INQUIRIES SENT VIA ADOPTAPET WE ONLY CONTACT APPLICANTS WITH WHOM WE WANT TO MOVE FORWARD. MEET PETE North New Jersey This adorable little boy with the cutest little toopheses you've ever seen is a black with white mask and toes, male Pekingese – Pomeranian/Tibetan Spaniel mix (best guess), 13 lbs., and around 6-7 years old. He is a FUN and FUNNY little guy. He LOVES to play with toys, dogs, you, whatever, he's not fussy. He tosses his toy around in the air and then jumps to catch it himself! He will chase a tossed ball for as long as you'll throw it. And he will entertain himself in general sniffing around, chewing on a nylabone, or taking naps in the sun. He is a VERY affectionate little guy and LOVES meeting everyone he sees. People, doggies, anyone who will say hi. He is just a happy little guy that wants to live life. He also LOVES snuggling with his person on the couch while watching tv, etc. He has a blast playing with the other pups in his foster home so would be nice for him to have another fur friend to play with but it is not necessary as long as he has a human around for most of the day. He is more of the submissive type so no mean doggies in his new home! He is also afraid of small children so tweenagers and up please. His xrays were normal, blood work was good, physical exam perfect, and he had a dental. He was extremely well behaved at the vet and groomer. He will need eye drops for dry eye and eye pressure for life. He is UTD, HW negative, neutered, dewormed, dental, housebroken, and full of love. Adoption donation is $450.
