Story
ABOUT MONTE Meet Monte! He is a 6.5-year-old bully mix with a big head and even bigger personality! Monte came to HAP after his beloved owner unexpectedly passed away. Understandably, transitioning from a home to the shelter was confusing and stressful for him at first. During his initial weeks, Monte needed time to adjust, but he's since settled in and formed a special bond with our team. These days, Monte lights up when he sees his friends, bouncing with excitement and gently nudging them for scratches. While he’s affectionate and loves attention, Monte is also perfectly content doing his own thing. He enjoys exploring our fenced-in fields, splashing in kiddie pools, and chasing his favorite toys. Bath time? Not a problem for Monte. His favorite part isn't the bubbles, it's the thorough scrub-down and the cozy towel-dry afterward. He’ll even let us drape towels over him like a little king, then lounge around in comfort and style. Monte is a smart, sassy boy who already knows how to sit, give paw, and speak for a treat. And if you're not paying attention? He might "speak" just to remind you he’s there! He’s the perfect mix of independent and affectionate, a loyal companion who loves to coexist with his people and snuggle up when the moment’s right. Monte is ready for a new chapter, could it be with you? If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! Story
ABOUT ZEUS Zeus came to HAP in July after his owner passed away. At 7 years old, adjusting to shelter life after living in a loving home has been difficult for him. Shortly after his arrival, Zeus began experiencing concerning symptoms, including vomiting, loss of appetite, and bloody stool. He was referred to Wilmington Animal Hospital for further evaluation and advanced testing. An ultrasound revealed a mass on his spleen, meaning Zeus will need a splenectomy to ensure he can live a happy, pain-free life. Zeus’s best chance at recovery is in a calm, home environment. While temporary fostering is an option, returning to the shelter after surgery would likely cause him to decline mentally. For this reason, a foster-to-adopt home is truly the best path forward for him! In foster-to-adopt, HAP covers the cost of his care and provides the supplies he may need! Zeus is a laid-back, low-key senior pup who enjoys chewing on bones, soaking up attention, and going for short walks. He is friendly with new people, easily won over by treats, and very affectionate. He enjoys long car rides, showing off his tricks, and melting into his friends for love! Given his age and size, Zeus is a low-maintenance companion who spends most of his day lounging or napping. He’s also comfortable being left alone and is not destructive when unsupervised. Zeus is already house-trained, walks well with a harness, and knows basic commands. Due to Zeus’s condition and behavior around other animals, we are requiring that he be the only pet in a home, so he can recover stress-free! Story
This friend has just arrived because their owner could no longer keep them. While owners can provide some history on their pets, our medical and behavioral teams will still evaluate them. Dogs that have lived in homes previously typically have some training established, but we cannot guarantee that those behaviors will remain consistent in a new home environment. They are pending interactions with other animals at the shelter until they have been cleared by our vet. Our staff will spend some time getting to know them and we will update their bio with more information as we learn. If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. Story
ABOUT LITTLE BABY Little Baby is a 2-year-old pittie mix who loves life! She came to HAP, at no fault of her own, when her owners could no longer have a pet. Little Baby quickly rose to fame for her short legs, adorable ears, and endless tail wags. While the shelter environment has been a little overwhelming for her, she’s been thriving with one-on-one time from staff and volunteers, building confidence day by day. She absolutely adores every person she meets, leaning into your lap for some snuggles. When she's not soaking up love, she loves going for long walks, zooming around our fenced fields, and playing with toys. Little Baby loves her toys and knows how to make the most of her outdoor time, often splooting on the grass and soaking in the sunshine. She is eager to please and incredibly treat-motivated, the kind of pup who will sit patiently, waiting for your praise and affection. Little Baby is also affectionate and gentle, known for crawling over just to rest her big, heavy head in your lap. She has also participated in our Doggy Day Out program, check out what they had to say about her: “She lives up to her name! She did SO WELL around other dogs/squirrels/birds/horses - she was curious but did not pull or make any motion to get closer or make any noise. She walked so well on leash rarely bringing her head up from all the sniffs she was enjoying on our three hour hang out session at Bellevue. We stopped for a doggy cone and a hot dog on the way back. She was the sweetest girl and just wanted all the love. Several people stopped to pet her while we were out and she did so well meeting them allowing them to pet her and not jump and just take in the love! I absolutely adore little baby!” **Little Baby does not enjoy being around or interacting with other animals. Due to this, she is looking for a home where she can be your only pet! Story
ABOUT WILLOW Willow is a sweet, cuddly girl who loves nothing more than spending time with her people. She can be a bit shy with loud noises, but she’ll quickly look to you for reassurance, she just needs a little comfort to feel safe again. One of Willow’s favorite things in the world is her stuffies! She proudly collects them and will try to carry as many as she can in her mouth when out in the field, it’s quite the adorable sight. She’s a polite girl too, always willing to give up a toy when asked before heading back to her kennel. Willow is a surprisingly agile pup and loves to show off by hopping to the top of her kennel when she’s excited. But once she’s out and about, her calm and gentle side shines through. She’ll quietly ask for pets and melt right into your arms for cuddles. If you’re looking for a loving, loyal companion with a playful heart and a gentle spirit, Willow might just be your perfect match.
