Story
ABOUT MONTE Meet Monte! He is a 7-year-old bully mix with a big head and even bigger personality! Monte came to HAP after his beloved owner unexpectedly passed away. Understandably, transitioning from a home to the shelter was confusing and stressful for him at first. During his initial weeks, Monte needed time to adjust, but he's since settled in and formed a special bond with our team. These days, Monte lights up when he sees his friends, bouncing with excitement and gently nudging them for scratches. While he’s affectionate and loves attention, Monte is also perfectly content doing his own thing. He enjoys exploring our fenced-in fields, splashing in kiddie pools, and chasing his favorite toys. Bath time? Not a problem for Monte. His favorite part isn't the bubbles, it's the thorough scrub-down and the cozy towel-dry afterward. He’ll even let us drape towels over him like a little king, then lounge around in comfort and style. Monte is a smart, sassy boy who already knows how to sit, give paw, and speak for a treat. And if you're not paying attention? He might "speak" just to remind you he’s there! He’s the perfect mix of independent and affectionate, a loyal companion who loves to coexist with his people and snuggle up when the moment’s right. Monte has also spent some time outside of the shelter with one of our staff members, here's what she had to say about him: "I had my buddy, Monte, for a day out yesterday and he was the best boy! He was great in the car and stood at attention in the backseat the whole drive. He loved sniffing around the back yard and followed me everywhere inside the house. He is not a big PDA guy, but he did give me a couple kisses and loved having his ears and under his chin scratched. We finished off the day with an afternoon nap on my bed. He hopped right up, laid down, And promptly fell asleep! I can’t wait to take him out again" - Kaitlin If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! Story
This friend has just arrived because their owner could no longer keep them. While owners can provide some history on their pets, our medical and behavioral teams will still evaluate them. Dogs that have lived in homes previously typically have some training established, but we cannot guarantee that those behaviors will remain consistent in a new home environment. They are pending interactions with other animals at the shelter until they have been cleared by our vet. Our staff will spend some time getting to know them and we will update their bio with more information as we learn. If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. Story
ABOUT ZEUS Zeus came to HAP in July after his owner passed away. At 7 years old, adjusting to shelter life after living in a loving home has been difficult for him. Shortly after his arrival, Zeus began experiencing concerning symptoms, including vomiting, loss of appetite, and bloody stool. He was referred to Wilmington Animal Hospital for further evaluation and advanced testing, where an ultrasound revealed a mass on his spleen. Zeus has since undergone a splenectomy, an important surgery that will allow him to live a happier, pain-free life. Following his procedure, Zeus was placed into a loving foster home where he can relax, heal, and recover in a calm, comfortable environment. This peaceful setting is exactly what he needs to regain his strength and emotional well-being after everything he’s been through! Zeus is a laid-back, low-key senior pup who enjoys chewing on bones, soaking up attention, and going for short walks. He is friendly with new people, easily won over by treats, and very affectionate. He enjoys long car rides, showing off his tricks, and melting into his friends for love! Given his age and size, Zeus is a low-maintenance companion who spends most of his day lounging or napping! If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. Story
ABOUT COCO Looking for some lively love? Meet CoCo! This affectionate, energetic lady is a 2-year-old mix breed. CoCo came to HAP when her owners could no longer care for her. Understandably, the shelter has been a challenging adjustment for her after living in a home. To help give her a break, and so we could see her true personality, CoCo spent some time in a foster home! Here is a summary of her behavior from her foster parents: CoCo is a smart, affectionate, and energetic girl with a big personality and an even bigger heart! CoCo walks beautifully on leash with lots of slack and rarely pulls, unless a squirrel dares to cross her path. She’s not a fan of cold weather and would much rather head back inside to cozy up once her walk is done. CoCo is incredibly loving and people-oriented. She thinks she’s a lap dog and will happily plop herself onto your lap for cuddles and belly rubs. She bonds quickly with her people and likes to keep everyone together, checking in to make sure no one gets left behind. She’s also very food motivated (a slow feeder is a must!) and eager to please, making her a fast learner. With consistent praise and treats, she’s already made great progress with house training and basic manners. This sweet girl has a lot of energy and will need outlets for both her body and brain. She loves fetch, enjoys food-filled enrichment toys, and thrives with structure and supervision. Soft toys with squeakers are her favorite, though she’ll need durable options or monitored playtime since she can get a bit enthusiastic. CoCo is quiet overall, rarely barking, and does great in the car, though she’ll need proper safety restraints, as she’s a little too adventurous with open windows. CoCo did well being handled for grooming, including baths and blow drying, and was tolerant and patient throughout the process. She’s curious about cats and would need slow, careful introductions in a home with them. Because of her energy and excitement, she may occasionally jump when happy, but she’s responsive to training and already learning polite behaviors. CoCo would thrive in an active, attentive home that can continue her training, provide enrichment, and give her plenty of love. She’s a joyful, affectionate companion who will keep you smiling, and very loved, every single day. If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire!
