Story
Some dogs are able to recover from neglect or abuse faster than others…..if only they could tell us about those early years of their life. Cody is a 3.5 yr old. 13# male Shih Tzu/maltese former breeder dog that is still in the process of his recovery, and is hoping someone with patience and previous dog experience is able to take him and continue working with him. Another small, playful dog and a secure fenced yard are also requirements to help him be successful. Cody would not be suited to a family with children of any age because of his fears of new people, loud noises, and fast movements. He has been in his foster home for quite a while – he trusts his foster mom, and is relaxed and seeks attention from her, but transitioning into a new home could be like starting all over again. Let me tell you more about him. His foster mom is retired, and home with him most of the time. Cody prefers to approach her for cuddle time when she is sitting or laying down, instead of towering over him. He comes to her when she calls him inside the house, but doesn’t have recall when he is out in the yard, so he is either contained in a kennel area when out, or drags a long leash around in his fenced area so you can use that instead of grabbing at him when he’s out. If someone scares or forces him, or raises their voice, it takes quite a while for him to forgive you. He tolerates meeting new people, but is more fearful of men and might try to hide from them. His foster home has a doggie door that he has learned to use, but his new home might not; Cody is willing to go out into the cold for a short time, so you will need to establish a schedule that works for him, and have a potty pad down for emergencies. His meals are dry food soaked in water for 5 minutes – he can be reluctant to eat, and acts like he is watching for new people to approach. Cody is most comfortable around the resident dogs, and loves to run and play with them. The other dog/dogs in the home should be tolerant, playful, be good pack leaders and “show him the ropes”. Cody rides OK in the car, in a crate. In warmer weather, he has been taken on short walks – doesn’t understand the purpose of a walk when there is a perfectly wonderful fenced yard to run around in. Cody has a loud bark, so best suited to single-family home instead of a building that shares a wall with another family. Cody is neutered, and current on vaccinations. The heartworm test and tick profile are all negative. He requires grooming about every 3 months. If you have questions, or would like to adopt Cody, call 651-771-5662. His adoption fee is $300 .

Story
Joey is as cute as can be, but to be successful with a new person, he needs someone with previous experience with shy/fearful dogs and is home much of the time. Joey is a 6 yr old, 10# male Maltese/Yorkie mix that came from a breeding operation, and he hasn't had the same socialization as a house pet would have had growing up. He is very shy with people, and although he's made some progress with his foster mom, it's been a slow process. Joey follows her around and wants to come close to her, but doesn’t really like to be picked up. He doesn’t like any pressure against his body but tolerates it - does best lifted up from under his belly area. He is a happy little dog that loves to run and play with the other canines in the foster home – he's cautious with people. Joey has learned to jump up on furniture, and at night he will jump up on the foster's bed (which is low to the ground) and sleeps with her and the other dogs. So he's making progress, and has the potential to continue trusting and interacting with his person, but it's going to take time and patience. His placement should be in an adult-only home, with someone that has experience with shy-fearful dogs . Joey is potty trained. During the day, he looks at you when he needs to go out (it's up to you to notice him there), and does fine on the flight of stairs to get down into the yard. If left for more than 4 hrs., he’ll use the pee pad. Because he's confined to the bedroom at night, he'll bark if he needs to go out. Joey needs a secure, small fenced in area to do his business because he doesn’t go on walks, and doesn’t do his business on a leash. Joey does come when foster calls him, but if he got out, he would be so frightened he would run off and not come to strangers. He rides in the front passenger seat of the car. Joey has spurts of energy when he will run and play with other small dogs – he really enjoys his relationships with the other dogs in the home, and should not be an only dog. No experience with cats. He is food motivated, which will be a help in training, but needs to watch his weight. Doesn't seem to shed, but his coat will mat. Unfortunately, he doesn’t tolerate brushing very well. Joey needs grooming about every 8 weeks. He is neutered, and had a dental cleaning done in January of this year – 27 teeth were extracted, 13 teeth remain. Current on distemper and rabies vaccinations. His microchip is registered to Second Chance. Transitioning into a new home might be almost like starting over again for Joey. This is a journey his new adopter can take him on. He needs a person that is familiar with dogs that want to trust people, but aren't quite able to do that without guidance, and a person that can keep him safe as he learns to navigate life. You need to accept him as he is, because change is slow. His adopter should have some experience with shy/fearful dogs. Gypsy is a delightful little girl. Very smart & oh, so cute! You can just check with the 3 little boy dogs that she lives with in her foster mom’s home. They think she is the greatest ever! Especially her best friend Joey. Gypsy is a Cairn terrier mix, and about 6 yr old, and currently weighs 13#. She has no interest in toys. Interests do include; lounging, food, following her foster mom around & playing with Joey & the other small dogs. She loves to be petted & tummy rubs are heavenly, but she is not a lap dog. Gypsy is a pretty quiet girl & rarely barks. She prefers her known familiar places & does not enjoy the uncertainty of new people or experiences. She walks OK on a leash, but doesn’t really enjoy it yet – afraid of birds overhead and cars on the road, and won’t do her business on a leash (so she needs a secure fenced yard for that). Her favorite place is her home. She is very food motivated & gets under foot when food is involved, so one must be steady on their feet. Her foster uses a piece of dry weight control food as a treat because she has gained weight and should drop 1-2#; too much extra weight puts stress on her legs, joints. Her foster home has a doggie door so she can go out at will except at night. Most homes don’t have this set-up, so she should be let out every 4 hours or so. She will use a potty pad indoors if available. Gypsy is very easy to have around, and so is Joey. Gypsy’s ideal home would be a quiet adult dog-experienced home where someone is home much of the time, a secure fenced yard so she can do her business and play, and her best friend and playmate Joey to go through life with. Gypsy is not a big barker, but will if new person comes into the home. Her foster mom says she has a "princess" complex - doesn't like bad weather and instead uses pee pads inside; if weather good, uses doggie door and doesn't need to ask to go out. The household routine is all dogs go out once in the middle of night. Gypsy is left loose in the house when her foster mom is gone (up to about 5 hrs) with pee pad down for emergencies. She sleeps in bed with foster and the other dogs at night on a heated mattress pad - bed is 18 inches off floor, so can get up without any assistance, but she might need doggie steps to get up on a regular bed. Gypsy rides OK in a car - sits in passenger seat, shakes a little. She has a sweet temperament, never snapped, never bitten. No exposure to cats - only plays with other dogs - no interest in toys or chews. Gypsy doesn't mind being picked up, doesn't like to be held or have pressure against her body, but loves to be touched and get pets on her terms. She doesn't know any commands, doesn't come when called unless food is involved (or she otherwise wants to). Her coat does not mat, and she doesn't need much brushing (likes being brushed). Gypsy will need to be groomed about every 3 months. Gypsy is spayed, current on vaccinations, and her microchip is registered to Second Chance. If you have any questions, or if you have a special place in your heart for special needs dogs and want to meet Joey and Gypsy, please call 651-771-5662. Because they are a bonded pair, they will only be adopted out together; the fee for the pair is $350 . A home visit may be required.

She is agile and fit. She is also faithful and sensitive. Faith needs a family with kids, or she needs an active owner. She loves kids. She loves action. She needs a home where someone is home most of the time. She needs an owner who will get her outside on a regular basis. She does fine when at home and can chill but she needs time outdoors.

Story
Meet Mia. A female mini Australian shepherd. She will be 5 years old this summer. We purchased her from a breeder as a puppy. She has lived with us in the woods on 5 acres her whole life. She enjoys the outdoors, loves snuggles and her evening time zoomies with our other two male dogs. She is spayed and had all the vaccines as a puppy. We did not continue vaccinations since. Mia is a bit anxious and scared which leads us to this difficult decision to rehome her. She is terrified of strangers, cars driving in the driveway and leaves falling from the trees. She gets along great with our other dogs. However she takes her herding genetics a bit too seriously. We have chickens, ducks and goats on our property, which she has chased down and bitten multiple times causing injury to the animals. Three years ago, her anxiety, has also led her to bite two men (delivery servicemen) at separate occasions. She has never bitten anyone in the family (we have two kids) or our other dogs.

Story
Boomer is 4 years old. He is a very happy dog. Loves his people and anyone he meets. He has tons of energy but will chill whenever you need him to. He needs training as he jumpson everyone. He is smart and loving. I don't want to see him go,but he needs more than we can give. The biggest problem is he likes to den, scratch before he lays down. He is very smart., we had to change all of our door handles because he knows how to use them. This dog would be great for hunting or with a family that what's more than a house dog.

Story
This Sheltie requires a secure, physical fence with direct access from the house. We adopt locally to the Twin Cities metro. We are not able to coordinate distance placements. Apply at Adoption McPherson, Mackie to his friends, came to Minnesota Sheltie Rescue when his loving person passed away. Mackie very much enjoyed his life as a therapy dog. This sweet boy is now looking for a comfortable retirement home. Age: 12 yrs young! Size: Mackie is approximately 18 inches at the shoulder and weighs approximately 38 to 40 lbs. Temperament: Mackie is an easy-going, gentle love sponge. He tries very hard to follow the rules, to do what is wanted. His primary life goal seems to be to spend as much time in your lap as you desire. Mackie would like to find someone with a shorter work day or who can come home during lunch to spend time with him. Fence: Because of Mackie’s deafness, a secure physical fence with direct access from the house would be considered a necessary protection. Dogs: Mackie gets along fine with the other Shelties here. He shows little inclination to play with them, much preferring the attention and affection of his human. Mackie occasionally carries soft toys and offers to play fetch for a couple of repetitions. Cats: Unknown - there are no cats in his foster home. Kids: No kids in his foster home though Mackie likely interacted with children when he was a therapy dog. Mackie would do best in an adult home, or a home with an older child who understands appropriate interactions with an older dog. Crate Use: Mackie loves his crate and often elects to spend time in the comfy crate that functions as an end table. Housetrained: Yes Responds to Cues: Mackie was trained with hand signals. He does respond to some cues, most notably “come”. Leash Walks: Mackie walks fine on a leash. Shorter leash walks to prevent pain and stiffness would be beneficial. Car Rides: Mackie rides comfortably in his crate in the car for his safety. Activity Level: Mackie is a relatively low activity level senior citizen. Barking: Mackie does a little “what about me?” barking when left alone, but stops quickly. Health: While in rescue, Mackie has had an exam, bloodwork, thyroid test, tick screen, heartworm test, and dental. While he may appear to have some hearing, he is almost certainly mostly if not completely deaf. Mackie says that other dogs in the home are optional. A human with a very big lap or chair - and who needs lots and lots of Sheltie love is a must. Someone who can support him through changing needs that normally occur with a senior dog. He can navigate stairs without issue but that could change. Mackie will gift you a lifetime of love in return! Adoption fee: $250 We adopt locally to the Twin Cities metro area of Minnesota.
