Story
Jesse is living in a foster home. Please submit an application from our website and/or email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to learn if you are a match! Jesse first came to us in February of 2020, right before Covid hit. She went right into an amazing foster home with a woman who ended up adopting her (and another one of her fosters from us as well). Sadly, her foster turned adopter became suddenly and critically ill in late January of this year, and passed away a couple of weeks later. There was no family to take over her dogs' care, and the only friend who stepped up could not have dogs where she lived, but kept them for a couple of weeks while she looked for a home for them. Luckily, Heartland dogs will always have a home with us so we welcomed them back. Jesse and her brother, Buzzby, also adopted from us returned to our kennel in early February and quickly found a foster home together. Their foster dad has four dogs of his own, and Jesse bonded with the two younger ones and loved to romp and play and hang out with her foster sisters all day. She would always come back and check on Buzzby, but he is 11 and was always sleeping! We initially posted Buzzby and Jesse as a bonded pair, but over the past couple of months began to see Jesse blossom in the company of dogs she could play with. Buzzby recently found an amazing adoptive home that was not scared off by his age or medical needs (he is epileptic). Now, Jesse is looking for her forever home, and we do want to ensure that she will have another dog since she has only known a home with another dog or dogs, and they bring her so much comfort. Jesse was used to being in a home so is as wonderful as you would expect: housebroken, trained, easygoing, able to be left alone— her foster dad called Jesse and Buzzby the “the best dogs ever!” We hope a someone out there will consider adopting this amazing girl who will fit right in to your life- no training needed! Jesse's adoption fee was sponsored by their previous owner's friend. She is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

Story
Carmen is living in a foster home. Please submit an application from our website and/or email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to learn if you are a match! Scroll through her pictures to see her cute videos! Carmen is what we call a Kentucky Brown Dog! She is a medium sized mixed breed that came to us from Kentucky in June 2024. Carmen was adopted into a wonderful family with kids, where she lived for almost 4 months until there was a fire in their home and they made the difficult decision to return Carmen back to us to rehome. Carmen is living in a foster home with one of our wonderful staff members, who has a pack of dogs that she loves. She loves every dog, really. She's a social butterfly with the other dogs, attended doggy daycare in her previous home, and has done well with small dogs, too. She loves to do zoomies around the dogs and jump on them and play. Carmen loves her people, but she is timid and finds some people scarier than others. Carmen does seem a bit more afraid of larger men and will bark at them at first, and takes time before she trusts them. Her foster dad is her all-time favorite person, so we know she can bond with men if they give her time. Although she loved the children she lived with previously, we do think an adult only home will be best for her. She will need slow, steady introductions to new people. Predictability and routine go a really long way. Carmen's foster says, "Carmen is so sweet!! Great with all my big dogs, will play with them and then when it's time to relax, she find a nice hard toy to chew on! She likes to follow you if you get up to go anywhere and sleeps next to you! Only had an accident the first night, gets up when wants to go out and she can hold it the whole night! Does get scared kind of easily, probably just because of what she's been through at such a young age. She runs away from the vacuum. She does do a perfect sit, and needs continued training, as she does have some puppy behaviors still. She's a great dog to have around, waiting for her furever home!!" Carmen's adoption fee is $250. She is spayed and is up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

Story
Katy is at our shelter. Please submit an application from our website or just come in to meet her during open hours! Scroll through her pictures to see her cute video content! Katy, or Katydid as she was known as at CACC, recently arrived from Chicago Animal Care and Control and quickly captured our hearts! She has loved everyone she has met and she really loves her stuffies! She attended our Slumber Pawty and was a huge hit because the first thing she did was grab a stuffie and walk around showing it off to everyone! Katy loves dogs and partook in many playgroups at CACC, and has already made dog friends here. She loves dogs and loves to party and have fun with them! She is outgoing, social, and sweet as can be. Katy was adopted from CACC last summer and returned back to CACC in March because the adopter was moving and could not take her. The previous adopter said she lived with kids and loves children. It is likely that moving back into a home will be an easy transition for Katy given she spent so much time in one, so is likely housebroken, and so on. Katy recently went to a foster home for a weekend stay, with a family with young children and another dog, and she had the best time. Here is what her fosters had to say about her! "She LOVES playing tug, being outside and can’t control her wiggles when you ask if she wants to go on a walk. At the end of the day she starts to settle and wants to be as close as possible to you before curling up into a little ball. She’s the softest pitty we’ve ever met! Just a fuzzy girl. She gives big smiles all day long and will give you lots of kisses if you get down on her level. She is definitely a party girl and would do great in a home with kids, no dogs, or a dog who also wants lots of play time. She’s been a doll. We had her both in a crate and in a room with a bed and she’s done well with both! She’s a good listener when learning the difference between kid toys and dog toys. She’s just a sweetheart and deserves the best home 🩷" We hope you will inquire about this super cute and friendly girl! Katy’s adoption fee is $250. This animal is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

Marceline is at our shelter. Please submit an application from our website or just come in to meet her during open hours! Scroll through her pictures to see her cute video content! Marceline comes to us, along with her sister Princess Bubblegum, all the way from Poteau, Arkansas- a small rural town with a pet overpopulation problem like so many of our rural partner face. Marceline is the bigger of the two sisters, and the slightly more confident/outgoing one. Marceline is so adorable and sweet, she loves people and dogs, and is a happy and playful girl. She seems really happy to be here with us! And we are so happy to have her. Marceline is very treat motivated too which has made teaching her how to walk on leash much easier! This is not a skill many of our southern dogs come with. We hope you will some and meet this southern belle soon! Marceline’s adoption fee is $250. This animal is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

Story
Sonic is at our shelter. Please submit an application from our website or just come in to meet him during open hours! Scroll through his pictures to see his video content! Sonic is a dream! We love this Kentucky-bred gentleman so much, He is such a wonderful, easygoing adult dog who is past the puppy phase and just wants to hang out with you and make you happy. He is so loving with people and will lean into you for pets and gaze at you adoringly with his big, open-mouthed smile! Sonic is unfazed by most things, whether it is young pups jumping all over him (as you can see in his videos, dogs are simply obsessed with him!), or loud neighbors in the kennel. Sonic is such a good boy and he ha snot had an accident in his kennel- he really tries to hold it until he is taken out. He is happy to meet anyone and everything-- he would probably even do well with a cat friend. We hope you will come and meet Sonic and see for yourself what a special boy he is! Sonic’s adoption fee is $250. Sonic is neutered and up to date on core vaccines. Sonic is Heartworm positive and is undergoing treatment with us. Heartland will cover the cost of treatment until he is Heartworm negative. Heartworm is not contagious to other dogs or people; it is a mosquito-borne disease. It is both preventable and curable. Sonic is in the pre-treatment phase where he is taking an antibiotic for 30 days. After he is done with his antibiotics he will receive three injections the first of which will be at our shelter on 5/6/25. He will then receive two more treatments on back to back days in June. That will complete the treatment, but he will need a quick retest at the adopter's vet 9 month post-treatment to make sure that he is Heartworm-free.
