Click here for Arnold's Facebook Album DNA results are in and Arnold and Dempster are 86% Beagle with another 6% Bassett and Labrador. They do have longer bodies like a Bassett Hound but sound all Beagle. Arnold, Dempster and Queenie as seen in their original Memphis, TN shelter video: https://youtube.com/shorts/FdASOSHTyP4?feature=share were dumped by family members after their owner died. All 3 tested positive for heartworms and all surely have tick borne disease and I can only imagine how bad Queenie's teeth are. They are all now safe in the Chicago area after a transport out of Memphis on 9-26. These 3 dogs have suffered some neglect besides their health care neglect, but with some time and patience they will learn to trust humans. Queenie has moved to her own foster. Arnold and Dempster just need a lot of human interaction and cuddles to help build their confidence. They are great with other dogs so a foster with confident well socialized dogs in the home will help them adjust to kindness. We need some exceptional fosters or foster to adopt homes that will help with their heartworm slow kill treatment plan. They are warming up to the staff at Tail Gate for Dogs and having a blast playing with all their new friends. We have decided that the boys can move into separate homes but there needs to be a playful dog buddy in their new foster to adopt home. They are doing great with our heartworm slow-kill program and we are hopeful they will be negative by the end of the year. The great part about our program is there is no exercise restriction so they can play and take walks. 7-13-2025: The boys have been in doggie day care/ boarding for a couple of weeks are are doing great!! They are warming up to the staff at Tail Gate for Dogs and having a blast playing with all their new friends. We would love to move them into a foster home, however, with a loving, caring patient family to help them get ready for their forever home. 6-21-2025: Marky and Melvin are youngish Beagle brothers we saved from an over-crowded shelter in Memphis, TN. Sadly both boys have heartworms and both have a grade 2/6 heart murmur that we hope will improve the longer they are in our heartworm slow-kill program. My guess is they are about 2 years old and have not suffered too much kindness from humans as they are timid and a little feral-- but there is hope. They are great with other dogs and cat safe. I have seen them fight with each other, but for the most part, they are a pair. We need a loving, patient foster to help them learn that most people are kind. Marky- the bigger one is a little more open to pets and cuddles. I found that both boys liked hot dogs and food is going to be a huge part of their recovery. We will be doing blood work soon, but I can just about guarantee that they both have at least Lyme disease that may be causing the heart murmurs. We are treating them as if they are infected as part of our heartworm slow-kill protocol anyways. We will also be adding some good supplements to help their heart and bodies heal. Click here for Elvis's Facebook Album March 18: Elvis' dental and neuter are done. He did well, lost 4 teeth and we are doing a biopsy on his potential scrotal tumor. What a sweet boy, that just needed some TLC. With heartworm slow kill, we'll test at 8 months and see where he is at, hopefully he'll be negative by then, but oftentimes it takes longer. We are taking our time with him especially since he is also infected with Ehrlichia, Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Glad he came to IBR otherwise that would have been missed. We are looking for a foster or foster to adopt home for him in the Chicago area with a safe fenced in yard. Heartworm slow kill treatment is super easy and so much easier on the dogs we rescue. Our adoption or foster app can be found at www.helpibr.org March 2025: Elvis was left outside the city jail in a cage in Tompkinsville, KY a few weeks ago. The jail is sometimes used as the local humane society. He was in terrible shape, extremely thin and frightened. We worked for a few weeks to line up transport and in that time it was discovered that Elvis was infected with heartworms and he had a sore on his testicles. The great folks in Kentucky got his vaccinations done and also got him started on heartworm slow kill. In between some nasty weather, and some plane electrical problems, Elvis was driven to Louisville, KY and then flown to the Chicago suburbs by Captain David Tan. His latest exam and bloodwork shows that Elvis is also fighting 3 tick borne diseases- Ehrlichia, Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. We got a closer look at his teeth- which were in terrible shape and Elvis also has an enlarged testicle besides a cyst. This poor dog has suffered some terrible neglect but while we are in the search for a longer term foster, he is being cared for and loved on by our good friends at Tail Gate for Dogs in Elmhurst. As Dr. Rimkunas didn't rule out testicular cancer, I have his neuter and dental set up for March 18th and we could really use some donations to help with his ongoing medical care. George's Facebook Album June 2024: Happy 2 year rescueanniversary Sir George. He’s come a long way in 2 years, but I haven’t had any adoption inquiries on him in over a year. He’s safe in a loving foster home where he loves to play with his foster sisters and he also loves to look for squirrels. He is also completely spoiled rotten getting the yummiest food and he feels safe and loved. I can’t even imagine how frightened he must have been in that awful cage we saved him from—and him having to suffer being outside 24/7 in all weather. It is a feel good to know his life is so much better now. February 2024: at long last-- my sweetie pie is heartworm negative!! So are 3 of his sisters which makes me very proud as Illinois Birddog Rescue will only do the slow kill treatment plan. His 3 sisters are in loving forever homes and I can hope that his perfect new momma is out there looking for him. The funny part about Georgie is that lately he has turned into a fuzzball with the funniest hair. He is also having the best time watching the squirrels in the yard as we have several building nests in our big trees. George has also become the sweetest most loving dog. He loves to be loved on. He loves to be brushed and he loves any attention he can get. January 2024: I've taken quite a few indoor photos of Georgie since the weather change so take a look at his album. He is so happy being an indoor dog considering his past life. I've gotten to know him a lot better too. He's been so great with all my dogs, especially my senior dogs and he is 100% cat safe. His passion is squirrel hunting and he will watch the antics of the squirrels for hours if I would let him. Lately we have been doing a lot more cuddles and George loves to be brushed. He's been a good sport about modeling the fundraising dog coats and a dog bed we also had in a fundraiser. The perfect home with George would be with a single lady or a pair of ladies that will give him time to trust. While I've always been able to love on George, it would be an adjustment for him to move to a new forever home. If there was a sweet female playful dog in the home, that would be even better. I have not taken him out and about so I don't know how he would do at a pet store or on a walk. My goal has just always been to help him get over the horrible life he had prior to coming into our rescue in June of 2022. He seems to have suffered the worst and is fearful with flashlights especially. He can get overly excited when folks walk by the house and delivery vehicles also get him a little excited. The sound of garbage trucks tend to scare him too. George will need a home with a privacy fence or a fence that has vertical bars which is working well for his fence jumping sister. In the perfect home, George will be a loving companion and if with a single lady-- a reliable watch dog. I am hopeful that his next heartworm test will be negative. Lyme disease is NOT curable so he will have to have annual testing and periodic antibiotic therapy the rest of his life. June 2022: George is a very handsome Liver/ Tricolor and white Field bred English Setter. He is an owner surrender and lived most of his life in an outdoor pen were he was trained to pee and poop through wires that he was also force to walk on. His neglect includes heartworm and Lyme disease and he had a 103 temperature upon arrival to our vet. George has started heartworm slow kill and is feeling better and we hope his sweet personality comes to the surface the longer he is treated. I was told the dogs are 6 years old but we will never know for sure. He is underweight and weighed 49lbs but should be closer to 55. We need to treat him at least a month before he can be neutered. He will need work on cage and house training. We are looking for a Foster to Adopt home in the Chicago area so we can monitor his care. candidates also need to have a traditional safe fenced in yard as the last thing George needs is any more stress. Click here for Reggie's Facebook Album April 2025: My precious, silly Reggie is an owner surrender, but he's been one of the easiest fosters I have ever had. I worked with his owners to get him into my vet to look for Rocky Mountain spotted fever- due to some of his odd behaviors. We did find it and antibiotics and supplements have really helped him and his brain health. He's got a few manageable triggers, like he can't be around any outdoor grilling or outdoor fires. His circling behavior is so much better and the drooling he was doing at his old home is pretty much gone. He's probably been sick since he was a puppy and I have a lot of experience with dogs with RMSF issues, including my own deaf Setter. Reggie came to me cage and house trained and while he loves to run around the yard and chase tweetie birds, he settles down nicely indoors. He is so cuddly and such a lap puppy too. He is GREAT with all dogs and he is perfectly cat safe. Reggie also has a nice recall and will usually come when called in the yard. He's such a cool pup- and I really want him to do some fun stuff like AKC FastCAT because he would LOVE to chase a plastic bag on a lure as fast as he can. Reggie could also be trained in other things like Barn Hunt, Obedience and Agility. I was told he is gun shy- so no hunting homes. A fenced in yard is MANDATORY for Reggie to keep him happy and safe. I just love this dog and hope to find him the best home-- he is very special. March 2025: Reggie is a VERY active Tricolor and white American Field Bred English Setter. He is about a year and a 1/2 old and has been a pet since he was brought home as a puppy from a breeder in Illinois. He is an owner surrender and needs an active home with a decent sized fenced in yard in the Chicago area. He is cage and house trained and great with other dogs. NO HUNTING HOMES-- he is gun shy!! Click here for Jed's Facebook Album September 2025: Jed is a very handsome Beagle (maybe mixed with Basset a few generations ago) that came to us from the Brownsville shelter in Tennessee in late August. He was found as a stray and was covered in ticks. He's suffered some neglect that includes sadly a heartworm diagnosis and he will need a dental. His first tick panel does show Rocky Mountain spotted fever and his blood work shows that he was quite a sick camper, but he is really feeling quite well in such a short time. Jed is your typical sweet, sometimes loud Beagle. He is so good with every dog he meets and he is also cat safe. In spite of his past life, he is a gentle soul and he loves to be everywhere you are. Jed is doing GREAT in foster care, eating very well, taking his meds, being a very good boy in his crate overnight and hanging out with his foster buddies outside. My hope is to find a loving foster to adopt home in the Chicago area to help with our heartworm slow-kill program.
