Story
Are you looking for a small, lovable little girl that needs her own best friend? I have loving 6 year old Chihuahua that deserves a life with someone that makes her the center of their world. One that has a ready lap for her to curl up on and stay for as long as you let her. I am gone soooo much. She needs a home with no small children or animals that move quickly or want to get her personal space. She loves humans but barely tolerates other animals. When it comes to small children, she will stay away because fast movements aren’t her favorite. She won’t go after them, but she will stand up for herself if she feels threatened. She doesn’t HAVE to have a new home. I love her dearly. It’s because of that love I want someone that can give her what I cannot - A consistent daily potty routine, lots of TIME, and A LOT of lap cuddles.

Story
Emmer is living in a foster home. Please submit an application and email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to learn if you are a match! Scroll through her pictures to see her cute videos! Sweet, wide-eyed Emmer was surrendered to Chicago Animal Care and Control after her owner lost their housing. Emmer was at CACC for over a month, and seemed so heartbreakingly sad. We decided to take her in to our rescue, and we are so glad that we did! Emmer was known to be a shy and reserved dog, a wallflower, and indeed she was...for the first two hours! Shortly after her arrival to us Emmer must have realized she was safe and almost home free, because her entire demeanor changed... She is just a normal pup who wants to party! Emmer loves her dog pals, and loves swimming and splashing in water, as you can see in her videos! She loves playgroup, and is a star. Emmer really turned her frown upside down so quickly, and now she will not stop smiling and showing us all that Fruit Roll Up tongue of hers! We love when dogs finally feel safe and happy enough to show us their sparkle. Never stop shining, Emmer! Emmer's adoption fee is $300. This animal is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

Story
Moonpie is at our shelter. Please submit an application from our website or just come in to meet her during open hours! Scroll through her pictures to see her cute video content! Moonpie first came to us from West Texas in September of 2025. She was only a pup back then, yet had already spent a few months in that rural shelter hoping for a home or a rescue to come along. The staff and volunteers fell in love with her, as does everyone she meets! Moonpie is great medium size, and smaller than she looks in pictures! Plus, her cookies and cream coloring is just the cutest. Moonpie is a dream dog, and we couldn't believe that it took almost three months for her to get adopted from us the first time around. We were once again in disbelief when we were contacted recently by a local animal control, saying that Moonpie had wound up there after being found as a stray. All attempts to contact her adopters failed. When we adopt out our dogs we trust that they will be treated as cherished members of their new family. If there ever comes a time when an adopter can no longer care for their adopted dog, or it is not working out, we hope they will contact us. We never want one of our dogs to go through this ordeal. Thankfully, it takes a lot more than a few days at animal control to get our Moonpie down. She was so happy to be back with us, and soaking up all of the love and new canine friendships, too. She is a happy girl, and always smiling. She is incredible. During Moonpie's time with us last fall, she spent some time in a foster home with a couple and two young children, and they raved about how wonderful she was. They said, “Moonpie loves to play and cuddle with her people, but also does well in the crate when she can’t be with them. She enjoys going for long walks and is all around the greatest companion you could ask for! She is very treat-motivated which will be great for continuing to work on training.” She also spent a few weeks in a foster home with older children, and you couldn’t have asked for a better “foster report card” from that foster. They said “Moonpie is a cute puppy with a nonstop wagging tail and a heart full of love. She adores everyone she meets and always greets them with happy kisses and plenty of enthusiasm. Like most puppies, she’s still learning some basics. Moonpie loves to play, explore, and be part of whatever’s going on around her. When it’s time to relax, she’s a total cuddle bug who can’t resist hugs and snuggles. She’s also great in her crate and settles down beautifully after a fun day. “ Moonpie is (and was) a regular in our playgroups at our shelter and meshes well with every single dog. Moonpie also LOVES the pool! We discovered this with our baby pool at the shelter, and she also loves to go in the big pool at Splash Dog in Des Plaines for swim sessions. It is so much fun to watch her love for the water! Moonpie is an absolute hoot. We love her spirit! You will too-- it is infectious. We hope you will ask about this super sweet girl. We hope she will not have to wait as long for a home this time around, and that, above all, it will be a good home that is committed to her. Moonpie's adoption fee is $300. She is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

Story
Buddy is living in a foster home. Please submit an application from our website and/or email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to learn if you are a match! Scroll through his pictures to see his cute video content! Re-introducing our little guy, Buddy! Buddy is a special guy to us here at Heartland. He originally came to us back in Oct ‘25 from a hoarding situation in Arkansas. He was SO shy and nervous, but had such an irresistible softness to him and he got adopted almost immediately. Buddy bonded fiercely with his family, but we learned that he needs time to accept people outside of his circle. When they needed a caretaker to come in for an elderly family member (that Buddy LOVED!), he struggled with accepting the caretaker into his home and his adopters made the heartbreaking decision to bring him back to Heartland. We have really gotten to know and adore Buddy, and have learned a lot about him during his time with us. He spent about 2 weeks at our shelter getting to know staff and volunteers, before going to a foster home. Buddy bonds hard with the people he accepts into his circle - he LOVES them, he would do anything for them! He is wary of new people, some more than others. He needs slower, controlled introductions to new people and does best with routine and predictability. Therefore, he needs a quiet household without many visitors, probably adults only, and definitely as the only dog. As you can see in his pictures and videos, he does have the ability to socialize with other dogs in controlled environments. However, he can be possessive of his beloved people and shouldn’t live with other dogs. He is doing great with his foster mom, who lives by herself without other animals. He is already house-trained, never has accidents in the home! He is also crate-trained, which will be important for him to have as a safe space if visitors come over that he isn't ready to interact with. Here is what his foster mom has to say about him, “ Buddy is a beautiful young dog who is looking for someone to help him be a happy adult dog. He is so sweet and likes to be near his human. He still acts a bit puppyish and when excited while being petted and played with has yet to learn not to use teeth when playing with people. He likes being brushed and it makes his curly hair shine. He has started venturing onto a closed in porch in the nice weather and seems to enjoy watching the world go by.” If you are interested in an amazing and loyal companion, please reach out about Buddy! Buddy’s adoption fee is $375. This animal is neutered, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

Story
Billie is living in a foster home! Please submit an application from our website and email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to see if you're a match! 10-year-old Billie is just the cutest little gal that we've ever seen! She has been living in a foster home for the last month while she waited to be cleared for adoption, she is now ready to go and can't wait to find a home to spend her golden years in! Billie is truly the perfect companion! Work a full day outside of the home? Not a problem she is happy to lounge around the house while you are gone! Other dogs or cats? She is happy to coexist with them! Want to go on a walk? She does great walking on the leash! The list goes on and on about how wonderful she is. Below is what her foster mom had to share about her. "Billie is the perfect little companion for anyone wanting some chill company. She loves snuggling next to you for as many couch naps as you’ll allow and also will make sure the couch is looked after while you head off to work. Billie likes to go for walks and isn’t bothered by the city sounds. She’s low maintenance and has a lot of love to give! She looks especially cute when she hops down the stairs like a bunny or when nestled in a cozy blanket. Don’t forget about her perfect dorito-shaped ears either!" Don't miss your chance to meet this special girl, she is sure to be scooped up quickly! Billie’s adoption fee is $175 (or free for an approved adopted over 65 as part of our Seniors for Seniors program!). This animal is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.
