Story
Have you ever met a dog whose eyes sparkle with the promise of a thousand adventures yet to come? My name is Poppy, and I am hoping that dog is me, waiting just for you. I am a petite gal, likely to settle in around thirty five pounds once I am fully grown, with silky brown fur that begs to be petted. Do not let my small size fool you though, because I have a big brain to match my big heart. I already know how to sit, touch, and lie down, and I am currently working hard on learning drop it and leave it. I do so love to learn, and I am clever enough to pick up new skills quickly when someone takes the time to teach me. I absolutely adore other dogs and have made so many friends during my time here. I am also wonderful with children and would love to be part of a family with little ones running around. I will admit that I can be a bit shy when I first meet someone new, but that shyness never lasts long. Give me a little time and a little patience, and I promise you will see me blossom into the joyful, glowing dog that I truly am. I am ready to leave my shyness behind and open my heart to someone who will be patient with me while I learn to trust. Could that someone be you? Please come meet me soon, and let us start our story together. 🐾 Poppy

Story
Do you have room in your heart and your home for a gentleman who has already overcome so much and asks for so little in return? My name is Jerry, named for a certain lovable government employee from a beloved television show, and I promise I live up to the comparison in the best possible way. I came to C.A.R.E. as a stray with a very large growth on my foot. It was so big that surgery to remove it alone was not an option, and everyone worried it might be cancer. Before my leg surgery, the team took x-rays to check the rest of my body and to make sure my other leg could handle carrying me on its own. During that process, they discovered I had swallowed a bottle cap at some point in my life, so I had surgery to remove that. A few days later, my leg came off, and the biopsy came back benign. I also had a small mass removed from my neck along with a dental cleaning and a couple of extractions. I have been through a lot, and I have been a very good sport about every bit of it. I am a creature of habit, and I love my routine more than almost anything. I am up early for a walk, I love being outside, and I have never once had an accident in the house, not even when I had that growth on my leg or when I was recovering from surgery. I walk well on a harness and leash, and while I would love to meet every single dog and person I see, I do best when introductions happen slowly and thoughtfully. I do not have an ounce of stranger danger in me. I get excited for guests, I love car rides with my head out the window, and people are always stopping to tell my person how cute I am. I am quiet, easygoing, and content almost anywhere, whether that is at the office, on the couch, or riding along in the car. I love my toys, though I do best with the sturdy kind, and I am wonderful about having boots, coats, or scarves put on me without any fuss at all. The one thing I ask is a home where I do not need to be gated away from cats. I am endlessly curious about them, and while I only want to chase, I know that is not a safe game to play. I have given my foster family so much joy, and I am ready to give that same joy to a family of my own for my senior years, in a home where I can simply be a happy, easy boy without complication. 🐾 Jerry

Story
Do You Believe in Love at First Sight? My name is Penelope — though for the first few days of my life I went by Eugenie. That name did not stick, but my luck sure did. I was at Chicago Animal Care and Control when a volunteer from C.A.R.E. came to look around. The staff there had my back and gave me a glowing recommendation, and when my C.A.R.E. person laid eyes on me, it was instant. They fell in love, and I became a C.A.R.E. favorite. Now I just need the next chapter — a home of my very own. Here is something you should know about me right away: I am an absolute dream in the house. I am calm, clean, and completely content to settle in and make myself at home without any fuss. No counter surfing, no chaos, no drama — just a relaxed, well mannered girl who knows how to share a space beautifully. If you are looking for a dog who will slot into your home like she has always been there, that is me. Fair warning: I am a certified house hippo. I love a good walk, I am always up for a little playtime, but I will never say no to a couch — especially if you are on it. If your idea of a perfect day involves a mix of fresh air and serious lounging, we are going to get along just fine. I am a people dog through and through. Men, women, kids — it does not matter to me. I might take a moment to warm up when we first meet, but give me that chance and I promise I will come around and make it worth your while. I have already proven I am worth rooting for. I am house perfect, heart ready, and just waiting for someone willing to share their couch — and their life — with me. Could that be you? 🐾 Big tail wags, Penelope

Story
Is there a dog who deserves an award for most improved trust? Raven just might be that dog. This beautiful black-coated girl arrived from Texas as a stray, so her history remains a mystery, but everything she has shown since then speaks to a dog ready for a soft place to land. Raven is highly intelligent and thrives on enrichment, so she is looking for an adopter who will keep her mind engaged through training and puzzle work. She is crate trained and loves nothing more than a good walk or a chance to run and stretch her legs. Because she loves the company of other dogs, a home with a canine sibling would suit her beautifully. Raven can be a little wary of some new people at first, a natural reaction for a dog who came from the streets with an unknown past. However, once she bonds with someone, she gives her whole heart. With patience and consistency, Raven will reward her person with deep, unwavering loyalty. Could you be the one to earn Raven's trust? 🐾 Raven

Story
Hi, I am Kanelo I may be a little guy, but I have a very big heart, and I cannot wait to share it with my forever family. The wonderful people at Community Animal Rescue Effort rescued me from Chicago Animal Care and Control because they knew I deserved a fresh start. Thanks to their love and patience, I have grown into a happy, sweet little dog who is ready for the next chapter of my life. I had the chance to spend several weeks in a foster home, and everyone discovered what a wonderful companion I am. I am potty trained, crate trained, and so well behaved that I could even stay out of my crate while my foster family was away. I lived with another small dog, and we got along great. I ride nicely in the car, I do well at the veterinarian, and I am happiest when I am spending time with the people I love. I can be a little particular about my meals, so we are still finding the food that is just right for me. Once we do, I will be one happy little guy. What I love most is being close to my people. I am the kind of dog who will happily follow you from room to room just to see what you are doing. If you are reading a book, watching television, working from home, or relaxing on the couch, I would love to be right there with you. Being together is my favorite place to be. There is something really special about the love of a Chihuahua. We may be small enough to fit in your lap, but our hearts are enormous. When we choose our people, we love them with everything we have, and I am ready to give that kind of love to my forever family. If you are looking for a loyal best friend, a wonderful little travel companion, and a dog who will make every day a little brighter just by being there, I would love to meet you. I think the best part of my story has not happened yet. I hope it begins with you. Love, Kanelo🐾

Story
Are You Ready to Give a Smart Pup the Fresh Start He Desperately Needs? Hi, I am Bruno! I am a pup with a lot of heart, even more potential, and — one of the most irresistible faces you will ever lay eyes on. Seriously, people cannot stop commenting on how cute I am, and I have been told my expressions alone are enough to make anyone's day. But I am so much more than a pretty face! I will be honest with you — I am still catching up on some puppy basics because my early months were pretty limited. I came to C.A.R.E. as a stray from Chicago Animal Control, and I think I spent my first few months in a small space without much experience with the big, exciting world around me. I did get the chance to work with a personal trainer while at the shelter, so I have had a real head start on learning the ropes! Here is the Good News: I am incredibly smart and so eager to learn! I already know "sit" and "touch," and when I figure out what you are asking me to do, you can see the pride and joy light up in me. Making you happy makes me happy — it is truly my favorite thing. I also have a calm, thoughtful side — I love taking my time to observe the world around me, soaking everything in at my own pace. What I am Like: I am not always "on" — sometimes I am perfectly content to settle down and just watch the world go by. I go absolutely wild for tennis balls — there is nothing better than a good game of fetch to get my tail going! I also love enrichment activities that give my brain something to chew on, and training is genuinely one of my favorite things. Having worked one on one with a trainer, I already know how rewarding it is to learn and grow — and I am ready to keep building on that with you. What I am Looking For: I need a patient, committed person who understands that I am still developing: Training focused: I thrive with structure, consistency, and positive reinforcement — and I genuinely love it Enrichment minded: Sniff walks, puzzle feeders, tennis balls, and new experiences help me grow and stay balanced Home often: Daily training sessions will help me blossom Patient and understanding: Some things other pups my age know, I am still learning Experienced or determined: You will need dedication to help me reach my full potential Playful and encouraging: Help me discover how fun life can be! What You Will Get: A smart, motivated dog with a wonderfully cute face who genuinely wants to please you — with a calm and curious spirit that makes him a joy to be around. Thanks to my time with a trainer, I already have a foundation to build on. With the right guidance, I will become the confident, happy dog I am meant to be. My Promise: I will work hard every single day. I will celebrate every milestone with you. And I will show you that investing in a dog like me is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. Are you ready to be my champion? Because I am ready to show you what I can become. 🐾 Bruno
