Story
Emmer is living in a foster home. Please submit an application and email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to learn if you are a match! Scroll through her pictures to see her cute videos! Sweet, wide-eyed Emmer was surrendered to Chicago Animal Care and Control after her owner lost their housing. Emmer was at CACC for over a month, and seemed so heartbreakingly sad. We decided to take her in to our rescue, and we are so glad that we did! Emmer was known to be a shy and reserved dog, a wallflower, and indeed she was...for the first two hours! Shortly after her arrival to us Emmer must have realized she was safe and almost home free, because her entire demeanor changed... She is just a normal pup who wants to party! Emmer loves her dog pals, and loves swimming and splashing in water, as you can see in her videos! She loves playgroup, and is a star. Emmer really turned her frown upside down so quickly, and now she will not stop smiling and showing us all that Fruit Roll Up tongue of hers! We love when dogs finally feel safe and happy enough to show us their sparkle. Never stop shining, Emmer! Emmer's adoption fee is $300. This animal is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

Peach is at our shelter. Please submit an application from our website or just come in to meet her during open hours! Scroll through her pictures to see her cute video content! Meet Peach — the sweetest Southern belle you’ll ever meet! Peach was adopted from us last year, but is back in our care after the family came to the conclusion they could not provide her everything she needed to thrive. Peach has all the charm, warmth, and friendliness you could hope for in a companion! At just 2 years old, this lovable Lab mix is the perfect blend of playful energy and affectionate cuddles. Peach absolutely adores people of all ages, including children (she lived with two children under 5 years old in her adoptive home!), and she makes fast friends everywhere she goes. She’s also wonderfully social with other dogs! There is not a dog that Peach cannot win over. Not only is Peach sweet, she’s smart too! She is fully housebroken, crate trained, and eager to please, making her a wonderful training companion. Here is what her previous adopter had to say about her! "Peachy is an affectionate, energetic, playful dog with puppy energy and a love for adventure. She loves other people and dogs, and will want to visit with anyone she sees. She's good with children and adults and always wants to be with people. She's extremely food-focused -- she'll do anything for a treat, and will seek out whatever snacks she can find. She's also exceptionally intelligent!" Her previous adopter ran with her, often for an hour at a time, so Peach would be a great dog for a runner looking to bring their dog along. Whether she’s joining you for adventures, lounging by your side, or greeting you with her happy tail wag, Peach is ready to be someone’s loyal best friend. If you’re looking for a gentle and loving pup to complete your family, Peach may just be your perfect match! Peach’s adoption fee is $300. This animal is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

Story
Aubreen is at our shelter. Please submit an application from our website or just come in to meet her during open hours! Scroll through her photos to see her cute video content! Aubreen is a smart and gorgeous 2 year old beauty who we met at Chicago Animal Care and Control. She was so engaging, fun, and affectionate, so we had to make her a Heartland dog! As you can see from her videos, Aubreen loves puzzles and toys, the outdoors, and snuggling (not necessarily in that order). She has the most endearing, goofy personality and the best smile, not to mention those epic ears! When Aubreen first met a dog here, she seemed so confused, and scared - like she'd never met another dog before. We think she had not been socialized much - but she is so so so happy to have the chance to make friends now! She is doing great in playgroup, and has made several new friends, including Virgil - her very bestie. We are loving seeing her learn how to play and experience the joys of just "being a dog!" We think Aubreen would be a great fit for an active family who loves training and enrichment activities. She is such a smart girl and absolutely adores learning, and when she's done with her puzzles and nose work, she would love nothing more than to snuggle up next to you on the couch. Aubreen is so smart and well-behaved too. She was definitely someone's pet and we hope she will be again very soon. She deserves to be adored. Aubreen's adoption fee has been generously sponsored. She is spayed and up to date on core vaccines. Aubreen is Heartworm positive and is undergoing treatment with us. She has been started on the less-invasive "slow-kill method." She will receive a topical treatment provided by Heartland to be administered by the adopter once a month until February, 2027. Then, an adopter will receive a quick retest with us if they choose, or at their own vet. Heartland will cover the cost of treatment until she is Heartworm negative. Aubreen’s Heartworm is not contagious to other dogs or people; it is a mosquito-borne disease. It is both preventable and curable! Once cured, there are no long term health effects associated with having Heartworm.

Story
Tye is living in a foster home. Please submit an application from our website and email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to see if you're a match! Scroll through his pictures to see his cute videos! Tye Guy is so special. His history with us dates way back to October 2021, when we first met Tye at Chicago Animal Care and Control. At only one year old, he had just lost his home, where he had been since he was a puppy. His family(which included kids) stated that they no longer had time for him. He pulled at our heart strings, and we were so happy when he was shortly adopted after he became a Heartland dog. Sadly, a few years later, Tye’s adoptive family no longer felt like they could properly care for Tye, so they made the difficult decision to return him back to Heartland. Tye is now about 5 years old, and the same precious boy that we met and loved back then. His love for toys sure is still true! Tye quickly found the toy bin at Heartland, and would bring his volunteers right to it - only to jump in himself to retrieve his favorite squeaky ball. He spent a little while at the shelter, but then moved to a foster home, with one of our regular fosters and their dog, who can be a little picky about her dog friends. Tye is great with her! His foster says “Our dog (who is super anxious) was comfortable with him almost immediately, and behaves with him like how she behaves with her oldest dog friends. He walks with her great, they curl up next to each other, etc.” Tye is not really into the rough-and-rowdy play that many of the younger dogs enjoy, but he’s the perfect “co-exister” for a similar dog. He also previously lived with a cat, and would enjoy being an “only pet” as well. As long as there are plenty of toys, and he can have his “security blanket.” He will grab plush blankets to just suck on or hold in his mouth. It is really sweet to see. Tye is doing great in his foster home, they really only have good things to say about him. He loves his crate, but also can be trusted to free roam. His fosters can tell how much he loves kids (he previously lived with several!) because when they walk him, he seems to want to meet them whenever they go on a walk or a car ride. Here is what his fosters have to say about him: “Tye (or Tye Guy or Tye Tye, as he's known to his friends) is a treasure! He is loving, cuddly, gentle, and a good listener. He loves going for walks and every new person or dog he meets is a new friend! He also adores car rides, but is mostly just happy to be with his humans wherever they are. He enjoys napping during the day, especially if there is a sun patch to be found, and is content to hang out with everyone at night, maybe with a chew toy, but mostly just cuddled on the couch as part of the pack. He is housebroken and loves chewing up toys and is especially adorable when he is carrying around his security blanket(s) or snuggling with them.” Tye is such a good boy, who has lost his home twice now, but still remains as loyal and loving as ever. We hope you ask about him today! Tye’s adoption fee is $300. This animal is neutered, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

Story
Splash is at our shelter. Please submit an application from our website or just come in to meet her during open hours! Scroll through her pictures to see her cute videos! We are so happy that Splash is a Heartland dog, because her story could have turned out very differently. A friend of our rescue, who is also the owner of Doggie Do Rite daycare and boarding in Northbrook, was scrolling online one evening back in April when she saw a post where someone was selling Splash for $200. The comments had her fearing for this poor dog's safety, so she contacted the seller and arranged to "buy" Splash herself, to save her from an uncertain fate. Splash had never seen a vet, so she had no vaccine history, no chip, was not spayed, etc. Vetting a pup can cost hundreds of dollars at a private clinic, so we were happy to take Splash in to our program and see to her medical vetting while she was fostered at Doggie Do Rite. Splash is still a puppy, and a super smart one at that. (Have you scrolled to watch her video where she is training? She picked all of that up in less than one week!). Splash is highly food and treat motivated, and she will need an adopter committed to exercising not just her body but her brain, too! She is a cattle dog through and through. Cattle dogs were bred to herd, using their mouths, and Splash may use hers to herd her people! She needs to work on not expressing her excitement with her mouth, and impulse control, so we do feel she needs an adopter with some degree of familiarity with the breed or these particular traits. Splash may still have an accident from time to time, but she knows to go potty outside. However, she is not used to going potty while on a leash yet so needs a secured area where she can relieve herself off-leash while she learns. She is crate trained, and after she is well-exercised both physically and mentally, so she settles easily in her crate with a frozen Kong and keeps to herself or naps. Splash also loves other dogs, and is a dainty player with dogs! If adopting Splash sounds like the perfect way to "cannonball" into summer, please come in and inquire about her! Splash’s adoption fee is $450. This animal is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative. The adopter of this special dog is entitled to a training scholarship worth $250. We are not able to pay this upfront; rather, once you have attended classes or had in-home or virtual training sessions, you can send us an invoice or receipt and we will reimburse you via check up to $250. Please note: the trainer must be a positive reinforcement trainer!

Story
Emory is living in a foster home. Please submit an application from our website and email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to see if you're a match! Scroll through his pictures to see his cute videos! We met sweet Emory at Chicago Animal Care and Control, after he had been waiting there for over SIX weeks for an adopter or rescue. We couldn't believe it. For a dog that's not even a year old yet - 6 weeks is a long time! His previous owner surrendered him to CACC because his dog had puppies (which were Emory and his siblings), and they couldn't keep up with all of the dogs as they grew into adolescents... All our friends at CACC raved about how great Emory was! And the second we met him, we knew why. Emory is a playful young boy whose tail is always wagging and he was always giving kisses - even when he wasn't feeling well. Emory is a typical young pup learning about the world - he is curious, playful, and entertaining. He loves other dogs, and is a playgroup rockstar, as you can see in his videos. He has yet to meet a dog that isn't a friend! He enjoys going on walks and does very well on a leash, making him a great companion for walking outings. Emory is also the rare dog that we let have a giant Costco round bed in his kennel and stuffies! He is afforded that privilege because he doesn't tear things up, like some dogs we know.... You can tell he has lived in a house before, he really does have good manners. Emory was recently in a one-week foster home with a family and their dog, and his foster mom says, "Emory loves dogs and is good with Kix, but he still has some of that puppy energy and she has to put him in his place every so often! He is also mostly housebroken, and improved each day, once we were on a good schedule!" Emory has SOOO much love to give and has been waiting far too long for a home. Emory will fit well into many lifestyles due to his medium size and his wonderful temperament. When you first meet him, he may come in excited and jump up for the first couple of minutes but he is really not a hyper pup and very even-keeled. We recently placed Emory into a foster home with a couple with no other pets in the city, and they have done a great job of working with him so he can be the best boy we know he can be! His foster mom writes, "Emory just discovered that life outside a kennel is the greatest thing that has ever happened to him! He is an enrichment superstar who goes wild for snuffle mats, puzzle feeders, bully sticks, and his beloved snuffle ball, because this big-brained boy always needs a job to do. On walks he stays beautifully tuned in to his person, happily sniffing every inch of the neighborhood while already showing all the signs of a dream leash dog in the making. He loves every human he meets — and while he's still perfecting his hello etiquette, once he settles he is the most devoted, cuddly companion you've ever had. With other dogs he's thoughtful and cautious rather than reactive, and we have a feeling a few good canine friendships are all he needs to become a dog park regular. Smart doesn't begin to cover it — Emory picks up on everything and lives for learning, which makes training him less of a chore and more of a joy. If you want a dog who will wedge himself into every cozy corner, fall asleep with his nose one inch from your face, and love you with his whole entire heart — Emory is your guy!" Emory is ready to shower his forever person or people with loyalty, cuddles, and joy. Please inquire about him today! Emory's adoption fee has been generously sponsored. This animal is neutered, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.
