Meet Candy
Candy is a young girl who is still discovering what it means to feel safe, confident, and loved. When she first arrived in foster care, she was timid and unsure of her surroundings, but with patience, consistency, and encouragement, she's slowly blossoming into a playful, affectionate companion. Every day brings a little more confidence, a little more personality, and another glimpse of the wonderful dog she's becoming.
One of Candy's most endearing qualities is how deeply she bonds with her people. She's a true Velcro dog who wants to be wherever her favorite humans are, whether that's relaxing at home, spending time outside, or simply following them from room to room. Once she feels comfortable, her silly side comes out! She loves running zoomies around the yard, chasing a ball, playing with her toys, and soaking up attention from the people she trusts.
Candy has also done wonderfully meeting other dogs of various sizes and energy levels. She's respectful during introductions and enjoys being part of a pack. Her foster family believes she would especially benefit from having a calm, confident canine sibling who can help show her the ropes and continue building her confidence. She's also been introduced to cats and has generally done well, although she can become very interested in them at times. She responds to verbal correction and redirection, but any future feline friendships would require continued supervision and careful introductions.
This intelligent girl is eager to learn and incredibly food motivated, making training one of her biggest strengths. She already knows "sit" and "kennel," walks nicely on a leash, and is an excellent passenger in the car. She's also learning to control her excitement when greeting people and taking treats. While she may occasionally jump up for attention, she responds well to commands and is making steady progress with consistent guidance.
Candy has made tremendous improvements with both housebreaking and crate training. After initially struggling with accidents and settling overnight, her foster family adjusted her routine and moved her crate into their bedroom. That small change made a big difference! Candy now sleeps peacefully through the night, often puts herself in her kennel when she notices it's bedtime, and has gone weeks without an accident in the house. She even lets her foster family know when she needs to go outside with a little bark. Continued consistency and frequent potty breaks will help reinforce these wonderful habits.
While Candy has many fantastic qualities, she also has some important behavioral needs that her future family must understand. As she has grown more attached to her foster family, she has begun displaying protective and defensive behaviors in certain situations, particularly when unfamiliar people approach unexpectedly or when she's feeling tired, startled, or overstimulated.
During a few encounters with strangers, Candy has become uncomfortable and responded by barking, positioning herself defensively, or attempting to nip when approached. These reactions are important to take seriously, especially as she continues to grow into a powerful adult Cane Corso. Although she has been friendly during many introductions, her responses can sometimes be unpredictable, and she is not yet comfortable with unfamiliar people approaching her freely.
The encouraging news is that Candy is incredibly responsive to guidance. Her foster family has been working on helping her recognize when she's becoming overstimulated and teaching her how to settle. They've even established a designated calming spot where she can relax, reset, and receive positive reinforcement before returning to her activities. Candy has responded beautifully to this approach and increasingly looks to her people for direction and reassurance.
Because of these behaviors, Candy needs an adopter with experience handling and training Cane Corsos or similar guardian breeds. Her future family must be comfortable recognizing canine body language, managing introductions, preventing situations that may overwhelm her, and continuing structured, reward-based training. Working with a qualified trainer experienced in fear-based reactivity and guardian breeds would be especially beneficial.
Candy has done well with older children during supervised introductions, but because of her size, developing protective instincts, and occasional unpredictable reactions, she is not recommended for a home with young children. A calm, structured household where her boundaries are respected and introductions can be carefully managed will give her the best opportunity to succeed.
Candy's ideal family will see beyond her moments of uncertainty and recognize the intelligent, affectionate, eager-to-please girl underneath. She needs people who will provide clear expectations, consistent routines, plenty of positive reinforcement, and the patience to help her build confidence without rushing her progress.
For the right adopter, Candy has so much love to give. She's playful, loyal, affectionate, smart, and already showing just how much she can accomplish when someone takes the time to understand her. Her journey is still unfolding, but the progress she's made in foster care is a wonderful reminder of what patience, structure, and love can do.

Transportation from the foster home to the adopter is the responsibility of the adopter to coordinate. Just Giants does not adopt outside of the continental US.
